Peter McGuire, who was 21 when he disappeared, was last seen leaving a swimming pool in Dunfermline in January 1993. His car was later discovered at the Forth Road Bridge but he was never seen again.

Police now believe a man using Mr McGuire's name and date of birth had been living in Hastings, East Sussex, before moving to west London.

In a statement issued through Police Scotland, Mr McGuire's family said: "Peter, you are a big part of our lives that is missing and the pain of that has never gone away.

"We all love you so much and worry about you every day. Please Peter find it in yourself to get in touch.

"It would be a blessing to hear from you. We would love for you to be a part of our lives again in any way you choose, your terms, your pace, one step at a time.

"We are here for you, our doors will always be open for you. God bless you Peter and know that you are loved by us all so very much."

Detective Inspector Kelly McEwan said: “We would ask that if Peter McGuire becomes aware of this appeal, then he comes forward to speak with us.

“Our priority is confirming if Peter is safe and well and we will not disclose his whereabouts to any other person against his wishes.”

''Peter's family had precious little information as the investigation rolled on for years without any sightings or information. However, on the 25th anniversary of his last confirmed sighting, police released a forensic artist's image showing what he may look like as an older man and revealed they had been following a new lead.

A man using Peter's name and date of birth had been logged at a homeless shelter in Hastings, East Sussex, in November 2016. Cops followed up but found that he had moved, possibly to West London. Around that time,

DCI McEwan said: “He did provide some information which suggested at least some knowledge of Peter’s circumstances. Unfortunately, he moved on very quickly before identification could be fully established.''
