You clearly see him getting out of what looks like a private hire car, not a black taxi. Presumably at 00.39.

Ah so that's when he got out of the taxi. It looks to me like he has his phone on.

That's very interesting. He's been dropped directly outside the pub - away from the High St. Gets out the car and heads with intent towards the forest. Makes me even more concerned now I've seen that. Looks like he knows where he's going and it's not in the direction of people/life on the High St.

Yes, I thought same last night. If he wasn't headed there to meet someone for some reason, then he had the intention to get right away from everyone due to his state of mind.

Unless you know the area, how would you know where to ask to get dropped off? If it is an Uber, you're going to have to put an address or at the very least drop a pin on the map. If he doesn't know Loughton, he's not going to know The Victoria Tavern. So would assume he's just keyed or dropped a pin at the edge of Epping Forest which doesn't strike me as 'meeting someone' behaviour. More in line with what you've suggested. JMO.

Wow, yes, that answers a couple of questions. Agree he's holding a phone, so that suggests a second one his mum doesn't know about, or an alternate sim. I think the bag is his Adidas one, just held by the strap rather than worn on him. He seems surprisingly relaxed. If the last sighting at oo39h was him actually arriving in a minicab, there's some lost time to account for in London, isn't there - it's not a 3 hour journey. I wonder if the taxi driver has come forward. More questions than answers, as usual!

He does seem relaxed in that cctv clip. I'm just wondering if he had maybe done this trip on a previous occasion while his mum was at work and she wasn't aware as he returned before she got home from her night shift. JMO

Perhaps, I've wondered the same thing, but I noticed she said he hadn't been mixing with friends, and it seems odd for him to tell her this time if he hadn't mentioned it on other occasions.

My 20-something son is glued to the directions on his phone walking around places he doesnt know. I think it's quite probable that Richard hadnt been there before, as his mum said, got out of the taxi in the dark, and followed his phone directions to the forest.

I would dearly love to be wrong, and for him to have been contacting someone local but I dont see it.

JMO

We don't know what he said to driver. He could have asked to be dropped near to the forest, and driver may have stopped there as an easy point for him to turn car round to return to London.

He could perhaps have been there at some time on a school trip, or heard about it from someone? Parents never fully know what their teens do, even if they think they do.

Though these days it’s possible to recce pretty much anywhere via Google maps and Streetview. He certainly doesn’t hang about once he gets out of the car - gives the impression of heading of heading for a specific location (IMO).
