  • Police believe stranger targeted teacher before dumping body, which was found at 5.32pm on Saturday
  • Teacher's body was found near the OneSpace community centre in Greenwich, close to Kidbrooke station

The father of a 'brilliant' Cambridge-educated primary school teacher found murdered in a park has been left a 'broken man' - as it emerged a woman searching for her lost necklace called police after a dog walker discovered the body.

Police believe a stranger may have targeted Sabina Nessa, 28, before dumping her body in a meadow, which lay undiscovered in Cator Park, south-east London, for almost 24 hours.

Officers were called at 5.32pm on Saturday after the teacher's body was found near the OneSpace community centre, a popular area with families and dog walkers in Kidbrooke.

A man in his forties was arrested on suspicion of murder a few hours after her body was found by a dog walker. But yesterday he was released under investigation pending further inquiries. Scotland Yard says that to reassure worried Londoners its officers will be patrolling the crime scene and open spaces across the boroughs of Lewisham and Greenwich.

MailOnline can reveal that on Friday night there will be a vigil close to where she was found amid ongoing tensions in the city over the safety of women after the abduction and murder of Sarah Everard by Met Police officer Wayne Couzens earlier this year. Flowers have been laid close to the crime scene today, where forensics officers are looking through long grass and carrying out finger tip searches.

A south-east London primary school has been left “devastated” by the suspected murder of one of its teachers after her body was found near a community centre on Saturday.

The Metropolitan police named the victim as Sabina Nessa, 28, from Kidbrooke, and said her death was being treated as murder. A man in his 40s who was arrested on suspicion of killing her has been released under further investigation.

Lisa Williams, the head of Rushey Green primary school in Lewisham, where Nessa worked, said she was a brilliant teacher.

“We are devastated by Sabina’s tragic death. She was kind, caring and absolutely dedicated to her pupils,” Williams added. “She had so much life ahead of her and so much more to give and her loss is desperately sad. As a school we are supporting each other through this very difficult time, and we will be providing specialist support to those who need it.”

"We know is a facility used by lots of people and we would ask anyone who was in or around the area and who may have any information to come forward.

"Did you see someone loitering or acting suspiciously?

"Or, did you see someone leaving the area in a hurry, perhaps running away?

"If you have any information, it is vital you tell us.

"We are working around the clock to deliver justice for the family of this young woman."

Hunt for killer as primary school teacher, 28, found dead in London park

Thanks for posting this. Had seen very little about this sad case. I really hope they find the person responsible soon!

Seems someone was arrested quite early, but now released pending further investigation.

I think it has to be determined whether she knew the killer in some way, or it was a completely random attack.

Fiona Oletu, 23, a paralegal who lives nearby said: “One of my neighbours is the guy who found the body.

“She was wearing sparkly boots and a slip dress, so he thought she had come from a night out."

Meanwhile Sabina's heartbroken father has been left a “broken man” after her death, neighbours say.

Her family have been left devastated by her death, with her dad going door to door to inform neighbours in Sandy, Beds, of the tragedy.

Fiona added: “One of my neighbours was walking his dog on the other side of the path and thought he saw a potato sack in the bushes by the community centre.

“He crossed over and said it was strange because there was someone passed out covered in leaves.

“So he got down and started talking to her, because he thought she had maybe got drunk and passed out.

"He brushed the leaves off and saw some blood and that’s when he realised something was wrong.

“She did not have a pulse and wasn’t breathing. His phone had died so he had to borrow someone else’s and then called the police.”

The body of a murdered Kidbrooke teacher was not found until hours after she was attacked, the Metropolitan Police said.

Detective Superintendent Luke Marks said there was a "short delay" in finding the body of Sabina Nessa, 28, after she was killed on Friday evening at Cator Park in Kidbrooke, south-east London, because it was "not on the main walkway".

Speaking at the force's New Scotland Yard headquarters as he appealed for people to come forward, he said: "A member of the public found the body the morning after the attack.

"It wasn't on the main walkway in the park, so that was the reason for the small delay in Sabina being found."

Police were called at around 5.30pm on Saturday, September 18 after the body was discovered near a community centre in Kidbrooke Park Road, SE3.

Det Supt Marks said: "We are horrified by the shocking murder of Sabina Nessa, and our thoughts remain with her family and friends.

"Today we are asking you, the public, for your help with this investigation.

"We believe that Sabina was attacked at around 8.30pm last Friday as she walked through Cator Park in Kidbrooke.

"This did not happen in the middle of the night; people would have been in and around the park at the time."

Police have launched an appeal for information following the murder of 28-year-old school teacher Sabina Nessa.

Ms Nessa’s death left staff and pupils at her school “devastated” after her body was discovered near a community centre in south east London.

The Metropolitan Police has said it is treating her death as a murder and has launched an appeal urging witnesses to come forward.

What happened?

Police were called just after 5.30pm on Saturday, 18 September, after a body was found in Cator Park near OneSpace community centre on Kidbrooke Park Road in south east London.

A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of murder but was later released pending further investigation.

On Monday, 20 September, police formally identified the body as 28-year-old primary school teacher Sabina Nessa. A post-mortem examination carried out at Greenwich Mortuary was “inconclusive.”

The Metropolitan Police revealed on Tuesday that Sabina Nessa’s body wasn’t found until hours after her death.

Detective Superintendent Luke Marks said there was a “short delay” in finding her body because it was “not in the main walkway” of the park.

“A member of the public found the body the morning after the attack,” he said.

He added: “It wasn’t on the main walkway in the park, so that was the reason for the small delay in Sabina being found.”

Officers believe the attack happened around 8.30pm on Friday, 17 September at a time where the park “was likely being used by many people.”

Who was Sabina Nessa?

Sabina Nessa was a 28-year-old Year One teacher at Rushney Green Primary School in Catford where she worked for over a year.

The headteacher of her primary school described her as a “brilliant teacher.”

“We are devastated by Sabina’s tragic death,” headteacher Lisa Williams.

She added: “She was kind, caring and absolutely dedicated to her pupils. She had so much life ahead of her and so much more to give.”

Ms Nessa lived in Lewisham and her father, who worked as a chef in an Indian restaurant, was described as a “broken man,” following the news, Evening Standard reported.

What happens next?

Police have launched fresh appeals for information following Ms Nessa’s murder and a police presence remains in place across open spaces in Lewisham and Greenwich.

Detectives are requesting anyone who saw any suspicious behaviour in the park on the evening of Friday, 17 September to come forward.

Police said they are working “very closely” with local authorities and communities to keep people safe while investigations continue.

A vigil has been organised in the Kidbrooke community in memory of Ms Nessa on Friday 24, September while St James’ Church Kidbrooke will open its doors on Friday to offer prayer to those affected by the tragic incident.

Sabina Nessa murder: Search at multiple scenes after teacher killing

This must be how they know approximately what time she was murdered. She must have left somewhere (home?) just before and had been on her way to meet someone/people and didn't show up. I wonder why police aren't releasing those details and why the homed in on the 40 year old man relatively quickly.

I also wonder if she was reported missing.

Ms Nessa's cousin Zubel Ahmed said the 28-year-old was a "beautiful soul" and appealed for help to find whoever was responsible for the "horrific crime".

A vigil is due to be held in her memory on Friday evening.

The Met Police believe Ms Nessa was attacked and died the previous evening, at a time when the park would have been busy.

Mr Ahmed said the family understood she had been on her way home "when she was attacked from behind."

He said her parents were "absolutely shocked" and "inconsolable still, understandably so, to hear of their daughter being taken away from them by some cowardly man".

Describing his cousin, Mr Ahmed said she "was the most caring person - kindest, sweetest girl you could meet".

"She's been teaching for two years. Loves teaching, loves kids, she's got a couple of cats at home. She was just a beautiful soul."

The area where she was found remains cordoned off and flowers have been left at the site.
