Wales schools: Ammanford stabbings prompt emergency safety review

Head teachers urged to check emergency procedures are up to date after two teachers were stabbed.

School safety procedures are being reviewed across Wales after two teachers and a pupil were stabbed.

Teachers Fiona Elias and Liz Hopkin and a pupil were injured at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, last week, which led to the school being put in lockdown for about four hours.

A 13-year-old girl has been remanded into secure youth detention accommodation charged with attempted murder and is due to appear at Swansea Crown Court next month.

Councils throughout Wales have contacted head teachers urging them to check emergency procedures are up to date in the wake of the incident.

Just awful.
Wonder if any news sites/journos will be doing any updates as the witnesses start being called on Wednesday.

"The accused was not allowed in the room, which required permission from a head of year.

The girl said Ms Elias had come into the hall and ordered the accused to leave and they went into the corridor to have a conversation.

'You could see from inside the hall, (the girl) she changed, her whole face changed into a different person.'

The student explained that the girl was 'disrespectful' and 'always arguing' with Ms Elias.

Another pupil, who was in the hall, told police he had also seen the knife."

Notebooks and drawings seized​

Mr Hughes told the jury that officers searched the defendant's home, and also seized her bag which had been left in a classroom at school.

A drawing was seized from the defendant's bedroom with a picture depicting Mrs Elias, accompanied with a derogatory name for her.

A notebook was also recovered from her room which made reference to the teenage victim.

Alongside a drawing "which may relate to [the teenage victim]", Mr Hughes said the words 'burning a person!' and '[the teenage victim's name] WILL BURN!', whilst 'burning a person' was circled.

'Burning the house down' and 'to Death' were also written in the notebook, and 'They could die' was circled and had a smiley face next to the word 'die'.

The notebook also had written 'hurting them badly' and 'cut their mouths and eyes' followed by the words 'yes' and 'no', with 'no' circled multiple times followed by a question mark.

'used to harm [herself] and bring a knife to school'.

Asked how old she was when she started bringing a knife to school, she said:
'I don't remember how old I was,
but I remember being in Year 3 or 4'.

Asked about a drawing she had made referring to
'Mrs Frog Face Elias',
the teenager said it was
'a nickname everyone around school knew her as'.

'I would say stuff like I'd want to punch her and slap her', she said.

'I wish she was never here.
I wish she was hurt'."
 
The jury at Swansea Crown Court began deliberations on Tuesday, but were discharged on Wednesday morning, with Judge Paul Thomas KC saying the trial had been "irretrievably compromised".
The judge asked one member of the jury to stay behind as members of the public were told to leave the court.

A retrial is due to start on 27 January.

Mr Thomas said the collapse of this trial was due to "a great irregularity in the jury which we all agree has irretrievably compromised our ability to consider this matter".

Sounds a bit ominous for the one juror who had to stay behind!
 
This is beyond my comprehension :oops:

How can an adult be so irresponsible as to jeopardize the whole trial?
So much effort, time and money wasted :(

And distress of the poor victims.

Is there any punishment for those responsible for this fiasco?
I ask as in my country we have only bench trials

(With little Sara Sharif trial I hope all will move smoothly)
