WASHINGTON — A troubled U.S. soldier who was being sent home from South Korea blended-in with a group of tourists bound for the demilitarized zone where he "bolted" across the border into North Korea, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

King had served 47 days at a South Korean detention facility following an altercation with locals, according to a U.S. official.

He was supposed to board a flight and end up in Fort Bliss, Texas, according to an official. Awaiting him there was a "pending administrative separation actions for foreign conviction," according to another official.

But instead he ended up leaving the terminal for a DMZ tour. It is not clear when he bought a ticket.

According to officials, King, 23, was taken to the airport and escorted as far as customs. He was set to return to Fort Bliss to face military action after completing his South Korean sentence.

What was he thinking ?
Even though facing military action at Fort Bliss -- why did he escape, or defect, as it appears ?
Sorry for his family.
Omo.

Private King was this week taken by a
military escort to the airport but fled at the customs area and travelled to the “peace village” of Panmunjom where he joined a tour group in the demilitarised zone (DMZ) before bolting into North Korea.

Emphasis mine.

Eta : Thanks for clarifying, @cujenn81 !

A tourist who accompanied Private King at Panmunjom said the group had been stunned when the US soldier ran between the blue huts straddling the border and over to the other side while laughing loudly.
Emph. mine.
Almost as if he had some type of mental break ?
What a cluster he has caused.
I still feel for him as who knows what is happening to Travis right now ?
As he is military, NK may feel heightened threats as in believing Travis is some sort of spy, and might be even harsher on him.

Wonder if our gov't. will exchange someone for him ?
The issue with that is we don't have anyone in custody that they would want, as far as I know.

Didn't the military escort try to restrain him ?
Was he shackled at all ?

I'm thinking not.
Not enough detail is given, but at this time; I'm not impressed with this 'military escort' .

He was not wearing handcuffs when he was escorted by military police as far as they could go — a security checkpoint at Incheon Airport, a commercial airport about an hour and a half from the DMZ that separates South Korea from the communist North, a senior administration official said.

But instead of continuing alone to the gate and flying back to the U.S., King tagged along with a group that had just arrived and was heading for Panmunjom, which is the Joint Security Area in the middle of the tense border area guarded by North and South Korean soldiers.

King had served 47 days at a South Korean detention facility following an altercation with locals, according to a U.S. official.

Two other U.S. officials confirmed to ABC News King was released from the detention facility, then spent about a week at a U.S. base in South Korea under observation. He completed out-processing from the facility and on Monday was escorted to the Incheon International Airport as far as the customs checkpoint. The military escort had no ticket and was not allowed past the checkpoint, so King continued into the terminal alone.

Because King had finished serving his time, he was no longer under custody. An escort to the gate was not required, and there was no reason to suspect he would fail to board his flight.

So a man was being flown home for military discipline but there was no reason to send an escort with him? He was trusted to get on the plane and then behave on the plane?

I'm under the impression that the military discipline awaiting him back home was a complete discharge from the military.

Two U.S. officials told ABC News that King spent about a week under observation at a U.S. military base in South Korea after being released from jail. He completed out-processing from the facility and on July 17 was escorted by U.S. military officials to South Korea's Incheon International Airport as far as the customs checkpoint.

The military escort had no ticket and was not allowed past the checkpoint, so King continued into the terminal alone, according to the U.S. officials.

A U.S. official told ABC News that King was supposed to board a flight and end up in Fort Bliss, Texas. Awaiting him there was a "pending administrative separation actions for foreign conviction," another U.S. official said.

Because King had finished serving his sentence, he was no longer under custody and, thus, an escort to the gate was not required. There was also no reason to suspect he would fail to board his flight.

The Daily Mail is carrying the story now:

Fears grew for King's welfare on Wednesday morning as North Korea had still not produced the soldier or acknowledged his arrest. Unconfirmed reports have said King 'defected' and his mother spoke out overnight on Tuesday to say she couldn't fathom her son doing 'anything like that'.

King's mother, Claudine Gates, said last night she was 'so proud' of her son and added: 'I just want him to come home, come back to America.'

Gates, from Racine, Wisconsin, said: 'I can't see Travis doing anything like that.'

While it's understandable that a mother would love her son unconditionally, Travis was already causing some criminal issues, and imo he was troubled.
Whatever he is facing now ... is most likely worse than if he'd just boarded that plane and possibly faced a dishonorable discharge ?

I can only think of a few reasons this young man would make such a poor decision.

1. He's mentally unstable.
2. He's incredibly ignorant about North Korea and how they treat Americans.
3. He has extremely poor impulse control and failed to realize that a quick, zany jaunt across the border would prove disastrous for him.

# 2 seems so unlikely it’d be nearly impossible to believe considering he's been stationed in South Korea for at least 10 months (as he was in an altercation at a nightclub in September).

# 3 also seems unlikely to me because SURELY these tour guides stress (multiple times!) the importance of staying with the group and only going where they tell you to go, and what horrible things might occur if you don’t.

IMO, the first scenario is the most logical (but also the most sad and scary) explanation. The fact that North Korea has yet to acknowledge his detention is even more disturbing.

  • Fred Warmbier, whose son Otto died after 17 months captive in North Korea, said Private 2nd Class Travis King deserves the 'benefit of the doubt'
  • Fears were growing for King on Wednesday as Pyongyang had still not produced the soldier or acknowledged the incident more than 24 hours later
  • Warmbier told DailyMail.com: 'We empathize with him and his family, no matter what the circumstances'
Each case is a little different.
I've always been slightly skeptical about the man in the security footage actually being Otto as the video showed (imo !) a smaller, shorter man ?

Still, it's kind of Fred Warmbier to extend compassion towards what appeared to be a deliberate and foolish act on the part of Travis King.

Hoping the current administration can help to resolve this, but it's going to be difficult given the fact that TK appeared to willingly run across the barriers ?

Sorry for TK's family and friends, they must be feeling sick with worry. :(

I'm getting a mental image of a hot-headed young man who acts before he thinks, but North Korea ????
Unreal.
Omo.

From the article:

"Carl Gates, the brother of King's mother, told the Daily Beast his nephew had been "breaking down" after the tragic death of his 7-year-old cousin earlier this year.

Gates said his son died in late February from a rare genetic disorder and had been on life support in his final days.

"When my son was on life support, and when my son passed away ... Travis started (being) reckless (and) crazy when he knew my son was about to die," the outlet quoted Gates as saying. "I know it was related to what he did.""

The U.S. Army report obtained by @TheMessenger
said Pvt. King ran across the border and entered a van. The U.S. military is looking into the possibility that the North Koreans had prior knowledge of his intention to cross the border.
@UN_Command opened a special investigation

even if they agreed to a trade, look how they sent back Otto Warmbier
I'm not hopeful.

I'm speculating that there may be significant changes from now on as to how the US military handles transporting military personnel who are facing further infractions in their home country ?

maybe if they have a mental illness
anyone in their right mind would not 'defect' to North Korea
especially a military soldier!
