Francis Userovici, 76, is a French national who has been missing since August 16, the National Park Service said.

Userovici is a Caucasian man with short, grey hair, is about5’6”, and is of slender build. He wears glasses and might be wearing size 8.5 sneakers. He might also have a small, red Nikon camera with him, NPS said.

noticed an abandoned rental vehicle at the Sand Dune Arch trailhead on Friday.

Park officials determined that the vehicle entered the national park on Aug. 16 around 8:50 a.m. They also learned that Userovici was last seen by his family on Aug. 13.

Rangers began their ground search on August 24. The search has now reportedly expanded into a multi-agency effort with teams from the National Park Service, Grand County Search and Rescue, and the Moab Interagency Fire Center participating with Bureau of Land Management helicopter assistance.

WHY DOES ANYONE HIKE IN THE DESERT IN THE TEMPS THERE NOW???????
"Hiking" might be a stretch. The Sand Dune Arch trail isn't even a half-mile round trip and is described as "easy" on trails sites. However, a longer, tougher trail connects to it, so it's possible he took a wrong turn or assumed he could go farther just as easily as he made it to Sand Dune Arch.

There are some french articles, I will translate here main points

  • Francis Userovici is used to the United States, part of his family lives there. In early August, the 76-year-old father, who lives in Châtenay-Malabry (Hauts-de-Seine), France, and his daughter, a 46-year-old Parisian, had an appointment in Portland, Oregon for the birthday of a centenary uncle. Since the death of his wife in 2021, the retiree has been learning to travel alone again. He took the opportunity to visit the US parks. The daughter heard from him on 15 august. He was not much into social media so it was not surprising to remain a few days without news. But on 24 august the daughter received a call from Rangers which informed her they had found his rented car, a mercedes.

  • Bad fall, discomfort, bad encounter? All the scenarios are possible. His daughter is not aware of any health problems, and on a hike, it was rather him who was in front. Suicide, she doesn't believe in it. He had booked other hotels for his American trip, friends were waiting for him in France, and he had taken seats at the Philharmonie for his daughter's birthday.

  • His bag and personal belongings were still in the trunk of his vehicle. He entered the park safely, his phone being located inside, but the local authorities could not locate the phone precisely. The Rangers think the vehicle entered the park on August 16 around 8:50 a.m.
  • Rangers unfortunately stopped their search on 2 Sept
  • His personal belongings were discovered in the car. Eg his iPad , his backpack. "If he had planned to go hiking, he would have taken these things with him," explains his daughter. For her, the criminal hypothesis is not to be put aside.
  • The rangers have deployed substantial means to try to locate him. Friends and family members also tried to retrace his movements, hoping that tourists or hikers saw him. However, no testimony has made it possible to advance the research. In the absence of a new lead, the rangers informed the daughter of the missing that the search was suspended.

  • Francis Userovici's daughter is now facing administrative slowness in France. She is waiting for the official end-of-search report for national park rangers, a report that could help to recognise her father's death. In France, it usually takes 10 years for a person who disappeared abroad to be declared dead administratively.
