"It's an active investigation. It's not cold or anything like that. So we have dedicated resources to the case so it can be worked full-time," CPD Sgt. Tony Newberry said.

McFadden is said to have ties to a variety of states - including New York, Maryland and Texas - but police say he has simply vanished.

"Right now we're hoping for the public's help. There are other law enforcement tools to try to find him which we are going to explore," said Det. Wright-Settle.

A tip line has been established for information related to Smith’s case: (434-970- 3381). A $20,000 reward is being offered for information that may lead to the location of Sage Smith and or an arrest.

05/07/2018 Release from the Charlottesville Police Department:
The Charlottesville Police Department, Criminal Investigations Division, requests the community’s assistance with the investigation of the homicide of Sage Smith. This investigation is active and ongoing. A tip line has been established for information related to Smith’s case (434-970- 3381)."

On November 20, 2012, Sage Smith left her Charlottesville, Virginia apartment to meet up with a friend. The friend, Erik McFadden, would later tell police he did have plans to meet up with Sage that night, but they never got together. The next morning when Sage’s roommate Aubrey woke up to find that Sage had not returned home, she grew concerned and reported Sage missing to the Charlottesville Police Department. Police say that McFadden left the Charlottesville area within a week of Sage vanishing. His whereabouts remain unknown. Erik McFadden has been named a person of interest in Sage’s case, which, according to a March 2017 press release by the Charlottesville Police Department, has been reclassified as a homicide. Sage’s grandmother Lolita told Dateline she desperately wants Sage home, describing Sage as “happy” after coming out as a transgender woman and changing her gender to “female” on Facebook in the weeks leading up to her disappearance. There is a $20,000 reward being offered for information that may lead to finding Sage’s remains or an arrest in her case.

20 years ago: Alicia Showalter Reynolds disappears on Route 29
"Alicia Showalter Reynolds was just 25 years old back on March 2, 1996, when she was headed to meet her mom and go shopping. Witnesses say her white Mercury was seen parked on the side of Route 29 south and that she wasn't alone.

"Witnesses say a white man in his mid-30s to mid-40s was stopped outside her car. The man, standing 5' 10" to 5' tall with a medium build and light to medium brown hair was driving a dark-colored pickup truck, maybe a Nissan."
Other cases have also been reported along Route 29. Some, like that of Morgan Harrington, have since been closed. Others, like that of Samantha Clarke and Dashad "Sage" Smith, have not.

In September 2010, Clarke vanished. The 17-year-old was last seen leaving her apartment in the town of Orange and never returned home. She has never been found.

Also still missing is Smith, a 20-year-old transgender woman last seen near the Charlottesville Amtrak Station in November 2012."

dotr, that's only a few from the list of missing and murdered up the 29 corridor in the last 25 years. Dashad Smith... Alicia Reynolds.. Samantha Clarke... Cassandra Morton... Morgan Harrington... Hannah Graham... Alexis Murphy... Anne Carolyn McDaniel... Thelma Scroggins... Tammy Tharpe... Lauren Smith... add the Shenandoah National Park and you have Julianne Williams and Lollie Winans... throw in Spotsylvania Co and you have Sofia Silva.. Kristin Lisk...Kati Lisk. Are these all unsolved? No. I am from an area on this corridor and I just don't understand why so many active killers have chosen to hunt this stretch.

I don't know about Spotsylvania Co, but the 29 corridor and the Shenandoah National Park are probably popular killing/dumping grounds due to their remoteness. Think about it, sprawling countryside and mountains, plenty of places someone could dump a body and never been seen or noticed; plenty of areas you could scream and no one would hear you. This is also a popular area due to it's beauty, so plenty of people to "hunt" for lack of a better term. Despite it being a national park, you can drive through and feel alone, only seeing a few cars here and there; if you don't stop at the scenic overlooks, you would barely see anyone. Up and down the 29 corridor are country roads leading to large farms and even dirt roads that lead deep into the woods. Even if you take I-64 W, it crosses Afton Mtn, so even this stretch of an interstate have remote areas along it.

Totally agree. Look at where Morgan Harrington was found - remote part of a farm in Albemarle County. Virginia is full of potential dumping grounds.

"Police have new information involving the man last seen with missing teen Sage Smith. Twenty-eight-year-old Erik McFadden has now officially been reported missing seven years after the incident occurred. Police are revealing a list of cities where he might be located. Smith, a transgender teen, was last seen in Charlottesville in November 2012 near the Amtrak station on West Main Street in November of 2012. Smith was supposed to be meeting up with McFadden.

While police do not have any new information about Smith, they do have an idea of where McFadden might be. Detectives on the case believe he may be living in a variety of cities, like Baltimore or Joppa, Maryland; Lake City or Columbia, South Carolina; New York City or Rochester, New York; or Atlanta, Georgia.

McFadden was a friend of Smith's and the main person of interest in the case. Police had brief contact with him right after Smith disappeared. He was supposed to come in to the police station, but never showed. Now, seven years later, McFadden's mother is officially reporting him missing, which police say could help in the investigation."

Charlottesville Police Provide Update on Sage Smith Case

The Charlottesville Police Department held a press conference Thursday morning concerning an unsolved homicide dating back to 2012.

On Wednesday, the police department filed a missing person's report for a person of critical interest in the case: 28-year-old Erik McFadden.

McFadden is being sought in connection with the 2012 disappearance of Sage Smith, which was reclassified as a homicide in 2016.

According to police, officers briefly spoke with McFadden immediately after Smith's disappearance, but he did not appear at a scheduled interview and reportedly left the area.

Since then, police say he has not been seen or heard from by officers or by members of his family.

Police are renewing a call for any information on McFadden's whereabouts, asking anyone with information to contact Detective Regine Wright at (434) 977-3381 or CrimeStoppers at (434) 977-4000.

A $10,000 reward is being offered through CrimeStoppers, and an additional $10,000 is being matched by the city of Charlottesville for information leading to an arrest in the Smith case.

Police searching for Erik McFadden in connection to unsolved murder

Local and federal agencies have spent “countless months and hours” scouring through evidence, interviews and witness statements. Despite their efforts, Public Information Officer Tyler Hawn told Dateline in December 2019 that the case remains unsolved.

Sage Smith is described as being 5’11” and weighing about 130 lbs. Sage was last seen wearing a black jacket, dark gray sweatpants, a black scarf and gray boots. There is a $20,000 reward being offered for information that may lead to finding Sage’s remains or an arrest in the case.
