AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - A dedicated group of community members and family of Elsie Wiggington came together to pass out flyers and search the area near her property in an effort to find the missing woman Saturday, June 8.

The search party met at the Food Lion in Amherst County, where over a dozens concerned individuals gathered early around 3:30pm.

Wiggington has been missing since June of last year. According to police, no significant leads have emerged at this time.

Elsie’s friends and family remain determined to bring her home, relying on the power of community support and persistent search efforts by police.

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - As the one-year mark of Elsie Wiggington’s disappearance approaches, her family is still searching for answers.

“If anyone knows anything, just reach out to the police, we just want to know she’s okay,” said Sativa Rucker, Elsie’s daughter.

The disappearance of Elsie Wiggington, has left her family and friends in agony, as they hold onto hope for her safe return.

The last time anyone heard from her was in June of 2023.

“She would not have left her children, she would not just have left her grandchildren... It was just not in her character,” said Tracey Coleman, Elsie’s foster sister.

Elsie is described as not just a dedicated mother and grandmother, but also a loving nurse that poured her heart into her job.

“She would not have let her you know her RN her nursing license expire. It was her means of supporting her family... This family she built meant everything,” said Coleman.

Her family and friends said it’s not like her to miss important family milestones.

“It’s very unusual we typically talk multiple times a week... She’s missed so many of her grandsons first things,” said Rucker.

After months of uncertainty, her family said they have a glimmer of hope.

The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office told WDBJ7 they are looking into Elsie’s disappearance. They are working the investigation with the state police.

“Some information that has come along during the time, period it gives me some true concern,” said Jimmy Ayers, Sheriff with ACSO.

When Elsie was first reported missing in June of 2023, the sheriff’s office said at that time they had reason to believe she voluntarily left, and did not pursue the case.

“I do not see that this was looked into a year ago, no ma’am... There was some indication that it could have been a voluntary disappearance,” said Ayers.

However, her family told WDBJ7 she has never left before and disappearing for this long is not like her.
“She loved her family, her children, her grandchildren. She loved being a nurse and a director of nursing. That’s her calling that’s what she loves. So I don’t see her walking away from it,” said Victoria Seal, Elsie’s step sister.

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - In Amherst county, new leads and community efforts are reigniting the search for answers into Elsie Wiggington’s disappearance.

Wednesday, a group of employees from the nursing home where Elsie worked took matters into their own hands. While walking around the premises, they discovered a blue tarp covered in leaves and rubbish. Their suspicions prompted them to call the police.

“They had discovered what appears to be a blue tarp, partially covered in leaves. Our officers responded down, photographed it, looked at it, didn’t disturb it much, went ahead and called a cadaver dog that came from Richmond,” said Jimmy Ayers, Amherst County Sheriff.

Despite an exhaustive search of the area, the dog did not find anything.

“It is a very active investigation, we had a meeting yesterday,” said Sheriff Ayers.

The investigation is a team effort, with the state police, Amherst County Sheriff’s Office, and now the Lynchburg Police Department joining in on the case.

IMO, the Sheriff dropped the ball early on. They are now playing catch-up, and have involved the VA State Police and Lynchburg PD. If you search facebook, family is posting some of their thoughts on what may have happened to her.

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - It has been one week since police opened an investigation into the disappearance of Elsie Wiggington, and her family remains determined to find answers.

“If you know where Elsie is, or you think you know or you think you’ve heard, please reach out to Lieutenant Jones,” said Tracey Coleman, Elsie’s foster sister.

For the last year, members of Elsie Wiggington’s family have been desperately searching for answers into her disappearance. However, last week marked the first significant turning point in their fight for answers.

The Amherst County Sheriff’s office says its investigators and state police are now meeting weekly as they work to uncover what happened to Elsie. They have also been keeping in contact with the Wiggington family.

Before Wiggington vanished, she told Coleman she feared for her life and needed help, so they planned to meet in Maryland. "She was afraid, I’ve never heard her in that state of being," Coleman said.

Elsie never showed up. They reported it to the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office under the old administration, but the family said they told them Wiggington left on her own.

A family is begging for closure, as they try to bring home a missing Amherst County woman.

Loved ones said before she went missing, Wiggington feared for her life and had plans to escape to Maryland, but she never showed up. ...

Now the office, under a new sheriff, is taking a closer look at the case.

It escaped me earlier that the reason Elsie's disappearance is now being investigated - a new Sheriff is in place.
Said new Sheriff, took the family's concern seriously and has brought in outside resources to help the investigation.

IMO, this will turn out to be a DV situation. Elsie did not leave on her own to start a new life without her children and grandchildren
