For Hannah Graham's family, "nightmare" leaves enduring uncertainty and loss
The Washington Post
By T. Rees Shapiro, November 14, 2014

Hannah Graham was a senior at West Potomac High School when she made a trip to Charlottesville to visit the University of Virginia. A straight-A student, Graham had her pick of colleges that spring, but after taking one look at the Lawn, with its white-columned porticos, brick pathways and leafy gardens, she fell in love.

“We knew it was a very highly rated school,” said her father, John Graham, who noted at the time that his daughter would be tucked away in the rural foothills of the Blue Mountains, far from the perceived dangers of the nation’s big cities. “Your kids grow up and they go away to school. It’s just what happens. It seemed as safe as can be. But how wrong can you be?”

. . .

In his first interview since his daughter’s disappearance, John Graham told The Washington Post about the search for his youngest child and the excruciating loss the family has experienced.

"The Albemarle County Police Department and the Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney remain committed to the investigation," the statement continued. "To protect the integrity of the case, we will not be answering questions or releasing additional information. We are working hard to ensure that justice is served."

Hannah Graham's Exact Cause of Death Could be Unknown

Albemarle Co., VA - We now know Hannah Graham's cause of death, but information released by Albemarle County Police indicates they may not know exactly how the University of Virginia student died.

Graham's full autopsy report has not been released.

An article in Rolling Stone dated November 19, 2014 discusses fraternity rapes and sexual assault at UVA and the actions taken by students and administration to prevent the crimes from being reported properly. UVA is now under a federal investigation known as "compliance review":

A Rape on Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle for Justice at UVA
by Sabrina Rubin Erdely

. . .

But the dearth of attention isn't because rape doesn't happen in Charlottesville. It's because at UVA, rapes are kept quiet, both by students – who brush off sexual assaults as regrettable but inevitable casualties of their cherished party culture – and by an administration that critics say is less concerned with protecting students than it is with protecting its own reputation from scandal. Some UVA women, so sickened by the university's culture of hidden sexual violence, have taken to calling it "UVrApe."

. . .

The University of Virginia is one of the 86 schools now under federal investigation, but it has more reason to worry than most of its peers. Because, unlike most schools under scrutiny, where complaints are at issue, UVA is one of only 12 schools under a sweeping investigation known as "compliance review": a proactive probe launched by the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights itself, triggered by concerns about deep-rooted issues. "They are targeted efforts to go after very serious concerns," says Office of Civil Rights assistant secretary Catherine Lhamon. "We don't open compliance reviews unless we have something that we think merits it."

towards the end of the article, Hannah Graham's death at the hands of Jesse Matthew is discussed:

Bartenders and bouncers all along the Corner are wearing T-shirts advertising the new "Hoos Got Your Back" bystander-intervention campaign, which all seems very hopeful. But this week, the third week of September, has been a difficult one. Charlottesville police received their first sexual-assault report of the academic year; Jackie and Alex were also each approached by someone seeking help about an assault. And as this weekend progresses, things will get far worse at UVA: Two more sexual assaults will be reported to police, and, in every parent's worst fears come true, an 18-year-old student on her way to a party will vanish; her body will be discovered five weeks later.

Suspect Jesse Matthew Jr., a 32-year-old UVA hospital worker, will be charged with Hannah Graham's "abduction with intent to defile," and a chilling portrait will emerge of an alleged predator who got his start, a decade ago, as a campus rapist. Back in 2002, and again in 2003, Matthew was accused of sexual assault at two different Virginia colleges where he was enrolled, but was never prosecuted. In 2005, according to the new police indictment, Matthew sexually assaulted a 26-year-old and tried to kill her. DNA has also reportedly linked Matthew to the 2009 death of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, who disappeared after a Metallica concert in Charlottesville. The grisly dossier of which Matthew has been accused underscores the premise that campus rape should be seen not through the schema of a dubious party foul, but as a violent crime – and that victims should be encouraged to come forward as an act of civic good that could potentially spare future victims.

Skip the comments. They are infuriating.

<On September 23, a UVA student was forced into a bathroom at an off-campus party and raped. Five days later, a second student was shoved against a wall near Monroe Hall and sexually assaulted. Last week came details of a violent attempted abduction and rape on Stadium Road. Each incident drew attention: brief reports in the papers; heightened vigilance.

But rape at UVA was already under scrutiny at the start of the semester. It’s easier to deal with the outside menace than it is to confront the murkier and far more common problem of sexual assault between people who know each other, and that’s where a prominent women’s rights attorney says the University is falling short. The fact that UVA’s sexual misconduct policy is under investigation by the Department of Education indicates she’s not the only one.>

This is not the first time UVA has been under compliance review.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WRIC) -
Police have upped patrols in the area near the fraternity house accused of being involved in a violent rape alleged in a Rolling Stone article.

Windows were broken and messages were spray painted on the wall of the fraternity, reading, "suspend us," among other things.
"A Rape On Campus: A Brutal Assault and Struggle For Justice at UVa." tells the story of a young woman who recounts an attack in 2012 and its disturbing aftermath.

In the article, a third-year student named Jackie says she was raped during her first year at the university by her date and his pledge brothers for three hours at a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity party.

Afterward, beaten and bleeding, Jackie says she called three classmates for help. They refused to take her to the hospital after debating how her report would affect their own chances to pledge.

Asking a university official why UVa.'s rape stats were so hard to find, Jackie says she was told, "because nobody wants to send their daughter to the rape school."

UVa Grad and former victim of sexual abuse at UVa was the peer advisor for the anonymous victim named in the RS article. Here is what she had to say:

Excerpt from the article:

The chapter announced Thursday that it had voluntarily suspended all operations — hours after its fraternity house was vandalized.
Someone broke windows at the house on Madison Lane overnight and spray-painted “UVA Center for Rape Studies” and “Stop Raping People” on the walls.
The chapter sent a letter to the Cavalier Daily student newspaper saying that though “at this time we have no specific knowledge of the claims set out in the Rolling Stone article, we take this matter — and these tragic allegations — very seriously.”
The letter said the acts “depicted in the article are beyond unacceptable — they are vile and intolerable in our brotherhood, our university community and our society.” The chapter said it would assist with an investigation.

<Sullivan said the suspension of all fraternal groups is effective until Jan. 9. She also has asked Charlottesville police to investigate the alleged rape at the Phi Kappa Psi house. The fraternity has voluntarily surrendered its fraternal agreement with the university.

On Friday, Attorney General Mark Herring said the university agreed to withdraw its appointment of former federal judge and prosecutor Mark Filip as independent counsel to investigate how the school responds to rape allegations. In college, Filip was a member of Phi Kappa Psi.

Sullivan had said the Rolling Stone article includes details that weren't disclosed to university officials previously.>

http://thevirginiaadvocate.com/2014/11/22/crime-map-updates-reflect-new-sexual-assaults/

It has been almost a year since The Virginia Advocate unveiled a device called the “UVa Crime Map,” powered by Google Maps. The Crime Map presents a vivid, interactive rendering of every police report published by Michael Gibson, the Chief of the University Police. It was our sincere hope that the Crime Map would revolutionize the way that students perceive crime on Grounds (and in some cases, neighboring Charlottesville).

With the Rolling Stone uproar, The Virginia Advocate has published new updates to the Crime Map that have occurred throughout the semester. If students zoom into the Downtown Mall, they will see an icon for the abduction of Hannah Graham, who was last seen at Tempo Restaurant and Bar. They will also see several new additions of sexual assault, which are noted under the icon of two blue people standing next to one another.

Looking at our Crime Map, it is clear that sexual assault and forcible fondlings are among the most reported crimes contained in Michael Gibson’s police reports. Assault still appears to be the number one reported crime. The sexual assaults tend to take place around the Corner, particularly on Wertland Street and the surrounding areas.

While The Virginia Advocate has yet to publish an official opinion piece on the Rolling Stone article, we do urge students to consider the data that our Crime Map provides. We want to note that some sexual assaults in Michael Gibson’s reports have no location data, so we decided not to create icons for these reported crimes on our Crime Map in order to maintain a macro picture of the areas on Grounds that have a history of crime.

The letter included four demands:
• "An immediate revision of University policy mandating expulsion as the only sanction for rape and sexual assault."
• "The immediate suspension of UVA’s Phi Kappa Psi chapter, and a thorough review of the entire fraternity system."
• "A thorough overhaul of the University’s Sexual Misconduct Board and the resignation of Dean Nicole Eramo."
• "The immediate implementation of harm reduction policies at fraternity parties, such as policing, University supervision, or permission for parties to be held in safer environments such as sorority houses."

November 21, 2014

"It's an echo of what was happening ten years ago and we know much longer ago than that," said Courteney Stuart.

On November 11, 2004, Stuart published a story in what many used to know as The Hook, an article entitled "How UVa Turns Its Back on Rape."

Like the recent Rolling Stone article which has sparked a storm of controversy and reaction, Stuart's piece describes several women's stories of sexual assault.

The extensive article opens:

"UVa has a system to deal with rape among students. A group meets, takes testimony, and issues rulings- all in secret. This clandestine process, combined with what one victim brands a "slap on the wrist" for rapists, has left several victims wondering who the policy was designed to protect."

The 20-year-old Greenwich, Connecticut native was discovered dead by his roommate

Last week, major news broke at UVA about both the gruesome demise of Hannah Graham and a sickening fraternity sex scandal

Tragedy struck the already reeling University of Virginia campus last week when a 20-year-old student and heir to New York City supermarket fortune committed suicide last week. He was the great-grandson of New York City supermarket chain founder Nicholas D’Agostino Sr. Just last week it saw its Phi Kappa Psi fraternity embroiled in a sickening sexual assault and, last Tuesday, missing student Hannah Graham’s death was officially ruled a homicide. newspaper the Cavalier Daily:

‘This news comes in the midst of a very difficult time for the University community…Let’s look out for one another as a community as we grieve Peter’s loss and begin to heal together.’

D’Agostino’s roommate is the person who called police Thursday. Sullivan addressed D’Agostino’s death Saturday in a letter to the school’s community in which she announced all campus sororities would be suspended effective immediately in the wake of a rape scandal.

‘I want to express my grief at hearing the news of the death of second-year student Peter D’Agostino,’ Sullivan wrote, ‘whose passing adds overwhelming emotion to what has been a difficult semester for all of us.
