In an effort to educate the public about missing women in the area, “Help Save The Next Girl” will be at Walmart in South Boston on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.

The non-profit Virginia-based organization will bring attention to the 2009 disappearance of Hattie Brown and 2012 disappearance of Wendy Dawn Beadles Francis and assist their families in creating more awareness in the community.

It also will provide an opportunity for anyone with information on the disappearances to come forward.

Hattie Gertrude Brown has been missing for seven years today. She would be 55 now, and her family and friends continue to pray the mystery surrounding her disappearance will one day be solved.

However, because this is the seventh year of her disappearance, the family is faced with making legal decisions including filing a petition seeking determination of death under the Code of Virginia, her sister, Diane Brown, said on Thursday.

A drill sergeant, teacher, giver, sister, friend and “baby girl” are all words used to describe the late Hattie Gertrude Brown during her Celebration of Life service held Saturday evening at Bethel Grove Baptist Church.

At age 48, Retired Sgt. First Class Hattie G. Brown, who was born Sept. 21, 1960, was last seen May 16, 2009, and because this is the seventh year of her disappearance, the family made legal decisions including filing a petition seeking determination of death under the Code of Virginia.

She would be 55 now.

Although it has been long and painful for her family who longs for answers on her disappearance, Saturday was truly a day of celebrating Hattie’s life.

Family and friends of a missing Halifax County woman are honoring her life on the tenth anniversary of her disappearance.

Dozens gathered in Clover Saturday afternoon at a "Celebration of Remembrance" for Hattie Brown. The former Army sergeant went missing in May of 2009.

Loved ones came together at the home of Brown's sister in Clover to share memories and pray Saturday.

Brown's sister, Diane, told WDBJ7 the community's support has helped her family remain strong during the decade her loved one has been missing.

"It's a wonderful thing," Diane Brown said of the support. "To see so many people pull together, praying together. It's great support and it's what we need."

If you know anything about Brown's disappearance, you're asked to call Virginia State Police.

Family keeping missing woman's memory alive 11 years after disappearance

It's been 11 years since the disappearance of a woman in Halifax County.
No one has reported seeing Hattie Brown since May 16, 2009, but she's far from forgotten. "Eleven years is just like a year ago for us. We're desperate for an answer," said Preteasta Barksdale, Brown's sister.
In 2016, her family was faced with the difficult decision of having her declared legally dead. "It is very emotional, but we have to hold on to hope," said Barksdale.

If you have any information on Brown's case, you're asked to contact State Police.

Just to see what would happen, I put in a FOIA request for details on Hattie's case. I got back a denial letter stating they had over 1200 pages of documentation and it was considered an active Felony Homicide investigation. Sometimes, they give you information even when they say they're not.

Search continues for Halifax County woman who’s been missing since 2009

HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. – Authorities are continuing to search for a Halifax County woman who disappeared 12 years ago, according to Virginia State Police.

State police said Hattie Gertrude Brown was last seen on May 16, 2009, at a Sheetz station with her nephew. The gas station is located outside of South Boston near the intersection of Route 501 and Route 58.

“Twelve years is long enough,” said Capt. David O. Cooper II, Commander of the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office. “We need that one courageous person to come forward with information. Finding Hattie would provide considerable closure and peace to her family, who has now spent more than a decade suffering from not knowing what’s happened to their loved one.”

The Virginia State Police, Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and South Boston Police Department still remain hopeful that someone will come forward with the information needed to bring closure to and justice for Brown’s family.

48-year-old Hattie Brown, a graduate of Halifax County High School, was an Army veteran who participated in Desert Storm in 1991. The Virginia resident was one of 11 siblings. She was the first female in her unit to earn her air assault badge and the first female to attend Airborne School in North Carolina, reports The Gazette Virginian. In 1998, she retired, with the rank of sergeant, to help her siblings take care of their elderly mother.

On May 16, 2009, Hattie's nephew, Derek Edward Brown, got a ride from his aunt, reports The Charley Project. Hattie picked Derek up at the Sheetz gas station at Route 501 and Route 58 in Halifax, Virginia. Hattie dropped Derek off at a party. No one has seen or heard from Hattie again.

According to The Charley Project, she was last seen sitting in her running vehicle outside the party.

In July 2009, two months after she vanished, her brown 2003 Volkswagon Jetta was found. The car was abandoned and burned on a farm located in the southeastern portion of Halifax county. Authorities suspected only a local resident would use that location. Video surveillance showed Hattie, and her nephew, Derek, in her car at the Sheetz gas station at 2:33 am on the day she vanished, reports The Gazette Virginian. Once authorities located her vehicle, investigators announced Derek Edward Brown as a suspect in the disappearance of his aunt.

"I think she did what anyone in my family would do. Go and help each other," her sister Preteasta Barksdale told WTVR. "I think when she got there, it turned out not to be what she thought it would be, but she went ahead and helped him with a ride."

Derek has a prior criminal record for destroying property, breaking and entering, and possession of burglary tools. He has never been charged in connection with the disappearance of his aunt, Hattie Brown.

Then, in 2013, Hattie's brother, 61-year-old James Brown, Jr., vanished from Clover, Virginia. James was last seen on November 28, 2013. He was seen walking near Neal's Corner Road in Cover, Virginia, reports The Charley Project. Authorities do not believe their cases are connected.

According to The Gazette Virginian, three of Hattie's siblings have died since she disappeared.

"I believe they all died of a broken heart,” her sister Diane Brown told The Gazette Virginian. “It’s like we’ve all been asleep and then woke up, and it’s a terrible nightmare that won’t end…the not knowing. Yes, it’s very painful, but we will forever hang on to love, faith, and hope. It’s by God’s grace and lots of prayers that we have the strength to face each day. Please continue to keep us in your prayers. They are appreciated.”

Hattie Brown was 5'4" and weighed 155 pounds when she vanished. James Brown, Jr. was 6"0" and weighed 160 pounds when he vanished.

If you have any information about the disappearance of Hattie Brown or James Brown Jr. Please contact the Halifax County Sheriff's Office at 434-476-3339 or Virginia State Police at 434-352-7128.
