Trial begins for father charged with homicide in the death of 4-year-old Larkin Carter Carr | WAVY.com

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — The jury trial for a Norfolk father charged in connection with the death of his 4-year-old son began Tuesday.

During the prosecution’s opening statements for Smith’s trial on Tuesday, prosecutors argued Smith knew his girlfriend’s 14-year-old son was abusing 4-year-old Larkin. Prosecutors said this abuse directly led to Larkin’s death.

The defense’s opening statement focused on showing Smith was a loving and caring father who had no idea 14-year old Bolsinger-Hartshorn was capable of such abuse.

Next, prosecutors called their first witness.

First, the court heard from the Norfolk firefighter who responded to the 911 call. He said Larkin was lying on the living room couch when he arrived. The child wasn’t breathing and had no pulse.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — After about four hours of deliberation, a jury in Norfolk found Hank Smith Jr., 42, guilty of all charges he faced in the death of his 4-year-old son.

Smith was convicted of felony homicide along with three related child abuse and neglect charges.....

Meanwhile, Smith faces five to 40 years on the murder charge alone. He had been out on bond until the trial, but judge Jerrauld Jones revoked the bond Friday saying Smith was a flight risk and a danger. His sentencing is set for Jan. 14.

To me it looks like the trial on 2/1/22 has been cancelled. Not sure "what" is on 3/2/22 - maybe a hearing. I'll look later. Also - not sure IF he has a hearing today - but I'll go ahead & post it.

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A Norfolk father received a 21-year active sentence on Friday, for his role in his son’s death.

Hank Smith was convicted in October of felony homicide and child abuse and neglect for the beating death of 4-year-old Larkin Carr.

The center of the Commonwealth’s argument at his sentencing was that Smith lied and didn’t do enough when he could have, to save his son’s life.

Paulding says she will appeal the sentencing for Hank Smith.

Seals pleaded guilty in the case. Her sentencing is set for three weeks from now and her sentence is capped at 21 years, 6 months.

Seals sentencing is on 3/18/22.
