Police 'fairly certain' remains are student missing from Metallica concert
January 26, 2010 10:46 p.m. EST
<snipped>
Police said skeletal remains were found after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday by a farmer driving a tractor through a hay field on his 700-acre farm. The area has no public access point, police said.

The farm is about 10 miles from where the concert was being held.

The farm's owner, David Dass, told CNN affiliate WTVR that he was out looking for damage after wind and rain knocked down several trees in his yard over the past week. He told WTVR that the area is at least a mile and a half from a main roadway.

"I looked down and saw what looked like a human skull, and my first thought was that it was Morgan Harrington," Dass told WTVR, adding that he immediately called 911.

Gil Harrington expressed concerns Saturday that there was beginning to be complacency in the search, she wrote in a blog on the Web site set up to help find their daughter.

On Sunday, more than three months after Morgan went missing, Gil Harrington still clung to hope.

"Despite the length of time Morgan has been gone I remain hopeful," she wrote. "Part of me is waiting to be surprised. Waiting for God to pull the rabbit out of the hat and bring Morgan home.

"I remember that the light always returns, it cannot help but return. Will the light of my life return soon? I cannot imagine that all the water of Morgan's potential is to run down the drain and be wasted. Can it really play out like that?"

Now, it appears, the Harringtons finally have their answer. Police say they have now switched their focus to finding out how Morgan Harrington ended up in the remote farm and who put her there.

Harrington Case Becomes A Criminal Investigation

State police remain steadfast that this is a homicide investigation. They are asking how this body ended up in a remote farm field, and who is responsible for it being there.

Seven hours after investigators started searching the 700-acre southern Albemarle farm there was a somber announcement from state police.

Virginia State Police Lieutenant Joe Rader says tips never led them in to Tuesday's discovery. "Just because a body is found in a particular location doesn't mean that it would have been prudent to search that particular location at that time."

Investigators would not pinpoint exactly what evidence they found at the scene to make them believe the body is Harrington's.

Colonel Flaherty says, "There are significant items of evidence that makes us fairly confident that scientific procedure will confirm the ID."

Lt. Rader says, "This is an important step for us in this investigation. We now have something to look at to lead us in a new direction. We still proceed as if this is a homicide and most likely will be a homicide. We have a perpetrator or perpetrators at large that we certainly intend to catch and to prosecute."

A positive identification from the medical examiner could come as soon as Wednesday.

Virginia State Police say skeletal remains have been found on Anchorage Farm on Route 29 in southern Albemarle County. Early reports indicate the remains are that of a young woman with long blond hair. She was wearing dark clothing and a bracelet.

Bass was riding on his tractor about 8:30 Tuesday morning when he made the discovery. Bass is baffled about the remains ended up in a remote part of his farm.

Bass says, "It's an inaccessible place. I couldn't get my pickup there. My tractor, my four wheel driver, I guess."

A State Police helicopter took to the air, searching for potential clues from the sky. The lead investigator on the Morgan Harrington case, Lieutenant Joe Rader, arrived on the scene just after 12:30 p.m.

Melissa Byrd, a friend of the Harrington family enroute to Richmond, stopped along the road. Byrd says, "She just touched so many people, the description of her, her personality. It's just so sad and scary."

A Gentle Tribute On Copeley Road

A body was found about seven miles from UVA's Copeley Road Bridge. That's the last place Morgan Harrington was seen October 17th, and the site of a make-shift memorial; a memorial that has new meaning for some now.

Fresh cut flowers and heavy hearts line the Copeley Road Bridge. Elizabeth Wilkinson went to high school with Morgan Harrington and is now a fourth-year at UVA. "It's halfway a blessing and it's halfway really depressing just to see how many people care about her, " she says.

Tuesday night, cards and a single candle marked the spot where Harrington was last seen alive. As news spread that State Police are "fairly confident" they've found her remains, emotions were running high.

Students have been stopping by the Copeley Road Bridge all night Tuesday. Just after 7:00 p.m. there were just a few items, but the memorial has grown quite a bit since then.

The weeks and months leading up to this day have been grueling. Morgan's parents have been forced to do what no parent should have to. They've had to hold out hope, and at the same time brace for the worst. Here's a look back at the events surrounding her disappearance.

October 17th, 2009, 20-year-old Morgan Harrington is excited about a big night out to see Metallica at the John Paul Jones Arena, but she would never see the band. Morgan broke the rules, and walked outside the arena. When she couldn't get back in, she wandered away and no one has seen her since.

Three weeks later, police divulge that University of Virginia basketball players admit they saw Morgan the night she vanished, but they don't know what happened. Then in early December, the Harringtons give investigators Morgan's dental records. As 2009 closes, police admit leads are drying up.

Just about two weeks ago, the Harringtons made the trip to Charlottesville from Roanoke for another update with police on the investigation. Now, they wait again, to possibly hear the news that could solve the mystery of what happened to their daughter.

Harrington case could turn into homicide investigation after autopsy
Published: January 26, 2010

<snipped>
After months of searching, police believe they have found missing 20-year-old Virginia Tech Student Morgan Harrington, but it’s not the outcome they were hoping for.

“We’re fairly confident at this time that the remains are those of Morgan Harrington, said Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel Steven Flaherty.

“At the time that Ms. Harrington would have disappeared the hayfield would have been up to about your waist,“ said Lt. Joe Rader with State Police. “Of course you know it has snowed since then, so a lot of things have happened since October that could have impacted the opportunity and ability to see these remains.“

“Once that confirmation is made we certainly move into a new stage of this investigation,“ said Rader, which will most likely be a homicide investigation.

“We have to sort the tips out, do our interviews and come to logical conclusions to find who’s responsible for the remains of Morgan Harrington, which we believe it will be Morgan,“ added Rader.

UPDATED: State police are confident remains are Morgan Harrington
January 27, 2010
<snipped>
Investigators say there is significant evidence to suggest the remains are Morgan Harrington's, but wouldn't elaborate.

They also wouldn't say if there are any obvious signs as to how she died.

State Police have received over 600 tips about this case over the last few months.

Investigators stress they need even more.

While State Police search for answers, friends and family being the grieving process.

At the bridge where Morgan was last seen a candle is now lit, a reminder that a young woman can now rest in peace.

The area where the body was found is far off the beaten path. The remains might have stayed there undiscovered, if not for the harsh winter weather that had damaged fences on the more than 700 acre cattle farm.

News7's Jean Jadhon spoke briefly with the Harrington's while they were on their way to Charlottesville.

Morgan's father Dan said he was using the drive time to process what was going on.

Remains likely Tech student Morgan Harrington's
A body thought to be Morgan Harrington, of Roanoke County, was found in Albemarle County.
Wednesday, January 27, 2010
<snipped>
How she died, when she died and even where she died are now the questions Virginia State Police are trying to find answers to as they scour the hayfield less than 10 miles south of Charlottesville, where Harrington was last seen alive after disappearing from a rock concert.

While state police are waiting for the medical examiner's office in Richmond to make a definitive identification of the body, the search for Harrington is now a search for her killer.

"This was a seriously decomposed body," said David Bass, owner of the 742-acre Anchorage Farm, explaining why he did not immediately recognize the remains as human. Bass said the rough field where he found Harrington was one and a half miles from his 19th-century farmhouse, hard against a mountain and one that he seldom walks over.

Rader said the private farm along U.S. 29 was never searched, and at the time of Harrington's disappearance, the grass in the field was waist-high. There is no public access to the field, he added.

Harrington's Northside High School friends -- scattered at universities from Newport News to Harrisonburg to Blacksburg -- drove to Roanoke when they learned her body may have been found.

"Some of us are taking it a lot harder than others," said Chelsea Helm, a Virginia Tech student. "We just all want to be together right now."

Dental records supplied by the Harrington family provided enough evidence for the state medical examiner to determine that the remains belonged to the Virginia Tech student who had been missing for 101 days.

A statement issued on behalf of Morgan's father, Dr. Dan Harrington is below:

"Morgan's mother, Gil, and I are overwhelmingly saddened by yesterday's discovery, but we are also relieved because our questions can now be answered and we can give our daughter a proper burial. We know that because of the good life Morgan led and the love she created for everyone around her, she is now in a safer, better place. We appreciate everyone's respect for our privacy at this difficult time and we thank everyone who has helped us through this tragedy and helped us find Morgan."

Remains confirmed as Morgan Harrington’s

1:12 p.m.

The parents of Morgan Harrington believe a “local person” in the Charlottesville area knew about the remote farm where their daughter’s remains were found on Tuesday, and is responsible for her death.

Dan and Gil Harrington held a news conference with reporters a few minutes ago. Dr. Dan Harrington opened by saying the results of the case were “not what we had hoped for,“ but added that it does offer some closure for the family.

Dr. Harrington stated that he believes Morgan was murdered, and the family will not rest until her killer has been found. State Police said on Tuesday that it is possible that Morgan’s case will become a homicide investigation at some point. Investigators are waiting for full autopsy results on Morgan’s remains, to hopefully determine how she died.

Morgan’s mother Gil Harrington said the sorrow the family feels is “etched into our faces.“ She added that for the first time in 131 days, she felt “faint tindrils of hope” not having to think of what someone is doing to her daughter. Gil Harrington also said her daughter “had some lovely bones,“ ostensibly a reference to the book and movie about a different murdered child.

Dr. Harrington said they had not been to the field itself, but State Police flew he and his wife over the field in a helicopter on Tuesday.

Dr. Harrington says the family plans to regroup and figure out how to honor Morgan’s life. He added that the family plans to go forward with Morgan’s work, volunteering with mental health groups.

Morgan’s parents plan to talk about their daughter and the case, at a news conference later this afternoon.

10 On Your Side’s Scott Leamon is in Charlottesville today. He’ll bring you what the Harrington’s have to say and where the case stands, tonight on WSLS at 5, 5:30, 6, and 7 p.m.

Right, it is likely that poor Morgan was driven to the gate of the property but probably the gate was not locked and at night anyone in the house would have been asleep and not noticed a car out there. She then was carried by several people; I heard waaaay back in the beginning of this case that Morgan was spotted talking with a group of people by an RV in the parking lot. Was it ever determined how far the purse was located from that RV??? I had always thought she was too high, and unfortunately gang raped. JMO

It was my understanding that the people she talked to at the RV lot were the UVA basketball players. The RV lot is the one reserved for athletes during events such as this concert.

A couple points or questions:

-Could Morgan have been forced to call her friends from the cell phone that she used to say that she was OK and would find a ride? I've heard of things like that happening. I feel like this point must have already been questioned by now, but I don't see it in discussion anymore and I think it's a real possibility.

-If so, certainly the friend she called had the number in her cell phone for at least a little while. LE would have known right away to look at it. They can't track that at all?

-As far as people saying they wouldn't have left the arena without knowing Morgan was safe... well, 3 months later and we are just finding out that she was, indeed, not very safe. How long were they expected to stay? Morgan had said she was fine. If they stayed until they had physical confirmation that she was safe, they'd still be there.

-Someone suggested that maybe Morgan was never actually on the bridge, and that the perp is the one who reported seeing her there. Well, they seemed to report with certainty that she was spotted there, which indicated to me that they probably had more than one witness report. It's ridiculous to rely on one witness to be completely crediible. If that were the case, Morgan was in 100 different places that night and in the 101 days after.

Any more talk about the jacket found by the railroad tracks? I guess she wasn't wearing it at the time seeing as jackets don't typically fall off your body. Carrying it? Was it thrown?

Why was she walking by railroad tracks? Is this near the Copley Rd. bridge?

Am I totally confused and jacket was not actually hers?

Why wasn't this farm searched by the police? It is only 10 miles from the venue!
They could have used cadaver dogs!
If there was a farm 10 miles away with 700 acres-search all 700 acres!

Morgan was missing for 101 days!

There is a $150,000 reward for information leading to arrest of person/persons responsible for
her death.

LE first conducted a search of the immediate area encompassing a three mile radius from the JPJ. They used dogs as well as helicopters. The helicopters were equipped with infra red heat seeking devices to further aid in the search. They executed the search using a standard grid pattern with search dogs. (See the link below and grid search) The search lasted three days. A week later, they came back and conducted a two day foot search again.

In addition to this, there was a two day 1600 person team search conducted on foot with Laura Recovery the first week in November. A search for a missing person costs an incredible amount of money for a police departments and a city’s budget. Just like any private sector business, LE has to work within budget. Morgan Harrington is just one of many cases being handled by the various police departments. You can’t deplete your entire budget on one case. It may sound cold but it is a fact.

I grew up near the area. There is not just one 700 acre farm within 10 miles of JPJ; there are dozens. Ranging in size from about 30 acres to 1800 acres. One square mile is equal to 640 acres. That would mean a search encompassing hundreds of square miles working out from ground zero. When someone goes missing you work outwards from ground zero. But you can only go so far. If a tip comes in after the initial search, LE will follow it up with a specific target area search as they did about a month ago after receiving a tip.

LE is an easy target to blame when something like this happens. But to be fair, they had done everything they could as it relates to following procedure for conducting an in depth search.

http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q...&gl=us&sig=AHIEtbR1BQeLc-koE2Sd4FA9jIdWhqGIMg

I wonder if the parents of morgan can do anything to the arena or the metalica security personel like a wrongfull death lawsuit or something..just a thought.

Even though in the moment this might seem like a route someone would take, in reality, how much fault can they be held responsible for? There are people that do things all the time that indirectly or even directly result in a negative effect.

IMO they were following procedure and would have not let anyone back into the arena that night. They had no way of forseeing what would happen to Morgan or I'm sure they WOULD have let her back into the arena even if it was against policy.

Job = someone's life? Not really.

All of this can go down the drain if one of the guards ends up being directly responsible for any part of this, but I don't see any indication of that.

Nancy Grace shot down the idea so quickly last night that perhaps Morgan was dropped into the field via airplane or helicopter, but I have to admit the thought crossed my mind. It helps avoid a lot of the obstacles that stood in the (terrain, no roads) way, plus it would be easy to see from that vantage point that there aren't any roads nearby.

Though I don't know many people that have airplanes or helicopters, some people out there do. No option should be discounted yet, right?

And the horseback idea seems strange, because what if someone saw you en route? Same with the 4-wheeler? You'd look pretty suspicious carrying a deceased person one of these. I'm basing this on the assumption that her body was taken there post-mortem.\

If she was led there, well, that opens up a new can of worms.

So the gate was usually kept OPEN, which means anyone could have entered and exited the gate to the property.

Bass said the remains were at a remote part of the property that can only be accessed by tractor. He said he usually keeps the gates to his farm open, which makes it susceptible to trespassers, usually hunters.

http://www.newsplex.com/home/headlines/82688062.html

JD, I suspect anyone that knew about this farm field could have driven through the gate at night and onto the field, without the owners seeing them.
Seven hundred acres of rolling hills and trees are a big place.

I doubt lights driving/moving on much of the 700 acres could be seen from the main house at night and the killer knew this in my opinion.

I suspect the killer/killers was in such a hurry they didn't bother carrying her into the wooded area that night and just layed her where they stopped....what was the weather like the night she disappeared ( was it a Sat. night) and the following couple of nights?

Then again, its a possibility a private plane could have flew low over the field and dropped her. Lets hope the autopsy can tell us if she was dropped.imo

True about the driving, but from what I understand the grass was waist high at that time of the year. It would be hard to get any type of vehicle through that with the exception of one designed for that terrain.

This time of the year, another question. But we have to focus on what would make it to that area back in October.

Unless it turns out she has been moved. Then we'd have to start at the beginning again once we find out when she was placed there which shouldn't be hard to do with forensics.

OK- a couple thoughts here, restating the obvious but here goes..#1 I really believe 100% this is a local perp. who knew this property, no outsider would feel comfortable entering the interior of a private parcel or know the back roads to get in there on foot or in a vehicle. I think there was only one perp. if there were more I believe the $150,000 reward would have made accomplices talk. He also may know enough about this property to realize that it was in fact a good hiding place for a body it DID take 3 months to find her! #2 This EH fellow seems like a tailor-made suspect he is young, doesn't appear to be threatening looking, is very local, is a violent sexual predator, knows the area of the body finding and may just be the bad guy who would have been driving by to take advantage of the impaired, trusting MH that we all kept saying was "at the wrong place at the wrong time".

Sorry if this has been posted, for those wondering if it's been confirmed...

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ― Skeletal remains found on a remote farm are those of a Virginia Tech student who disappeared after attending a Metallica concert in Charlottesville, state police said Wednesday.

Virginia's chief medical examiner used Morgan Harrington's dental records to make the confirmation, state police said in a statement. The cause and time of Harrington's death have not been determined, said investigators, who have shifted to a homicide investigation.

My own hinky feeling:
I think one of the people who reported seeing her outside the arena is the perp.
Probably the one who saw her on the bridge.
I think she was actually picked up, probably willingly, in one of the parking lots.....

carbuff, Excellent point!
I agree the parking lot where her purse and cell phone with batteries taken out would be where I suspect she was picked up/or taken from.

Wonder how close that area was to the address of the person whose initials have been mentioned a few times today?

I went on Albemarle County GIS website and pulled up the address as listed by the sex offender registry for EH. I changed the legend to pull up the last orthophotography shots to find the location of poor Morgan.
They have a feature on there that you can measure distance. If this guy walks out his back door and goes straight to where she was found it is 1.0 mile.
Awfully close don't you think?

True about the driving, but from what I understand the grass was waist high at that time of the year.
It would be hard to get any type of vehicle through that with the exception of one designed for that terrain.

This time of the year, another question. But we have to focus on what would make it to that area back in October.

Unless it turns out she has been moved. Then we'd have to start at the beginning again once we find out when she was placed there which shouldn't be hard to do with forensics.

LL, I heard the same thing said about the grass being waist high in October, after just being cut in August....I speak from experience when I say the following.

I find this hard to believe, in 2 months this cut grass grew to be waist high?
Why wasn't the hay cut again if it grew that much?
If it was that high, the grass blades should still be laying over on the ground and could be measured for it's height.

KNEE high grass in 2 months I would believe!!!...jmo

If this SO lives only one tenth a mile from this pasture that would only be 528 feet.

walking/driving in waist high or knee high or hip high grass for 528 feet wouldn't be a big problem using the same path.

Very close. I am going to try and go to this site to see it too. I hope LE is checking out this guy by now.

EH is way too close for comfort, but why would he put her where they would think he did it. That is what confuses me. Maybe just immaturity, stupidity, whatever.
