The man accused of fatally shooting three well-known Alexandria residents over the past decade in brazen, daylight attacks at their homes behaved in a much more subdued manner than usual in a court appearance Thursday morning — sitting calmly throughout the proceeding and twice conferring with his counsel.

Prosecutors have alleged that Severance was motivated by a child-custody decision that went against him and a political doctrine that he felt allowed him to kill members of the “status quo utopian elite,” according to court filings.
