Her disappearance was initially being investigated as a missing persons case, but state police said in an update Thursday afternoon that new information obtained by investigators indicates that her disappearance is suspicious

Vermont State Police provided an update on their search efforts for 82-year-old Roberta Martin of Enosburgh, who was last heard from during a phone call with her family on the night of July 16. Martin was reported missing just before noon on Wednesday after her neighbors went to check on her at her home on Butternut Hollow Road and could not find her.

During a press briefing, VSP said dozens of people are involved in the search efforts for Martin. They did not confirm whether they observed a forced entry into her home.

On Wednesday, investigators said they obtained information that indicates that Martin's disappearance is suspicious but would not comment further on the evidence that led them to this conclusion.

“Investigators obtained information that indicates Ms. Martin’s disappearance is suspicious,” state police said in a press release issued Thursday afternoon.

“Again, I can’t talk about some things that we’re seeing at the house.”

He did say investigators had found “some items of potential evidence.”

Concerning her neighbor’s house:

Detectives as well as uniformed troopers could also be seen Thursday morning into the afternoon at a neighboring property about 75 yards from Martin’s residence.

“They’re kicking us all out and getting a search warrant,” he said.

Trudeau, speaking later Thursday afternoon at the press briefing, said that there was little he could say publicly about the house next door to Martin’s and investigators’ interest in it.

“I can comment that we’ve seized the house next door, we will be applying for a search warrant,” he said, adding, “We’re applying for a search warrant because we believe we have probable cause to search it. I can’t go beyond that, sorry.”

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

Search efforts for missing person Roberta Martin concluded at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday. She has not been located. Personnel from the Vermont State Police and supporting agencies will return to the scene at about 9 a.m. Friday, July 19.

It sounds like she did not leave her home willingly. At 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday she was fine, 12 hours later she was known to be missing.

Police are interested in anything that happened in the area after 10 p.m. on Tuesday ... joggers and walkers were seen in the area.

No idea whether this is the right area, but I'm looking for three houses. Roberta's house, the neighbour that checked on her, and the neighbour who is 75 yards away. I added a 75 yard line on the road to give scale.

There are several houses closer to the intersection. Has there been any live on-scene footage - even of the police blockade?

The woods were searched, then (upthread) there was probable cause for a search warrant of a property 75 yards away.

One possibility is that someone expected an inheritance, and decided that she had lived long enough. Another is a neighbour dispute. Was that in play? Random? Also possible.

Joggers and walkers were in the area between 10 p.m. and noon the following day.

What are the chances of her being alive since Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. and Thursday at midnight?

Who would take an 82 year old woman out of her house in the middle of the night? A neighbour, a stranger, a family member? How much land is attached the house? Was there a land dispute or neighbour disagreement?

If this was sexual assault, she would have been found in her house. That is, I haven't read of a serial random-victim sex offender removing the body. They typically offend, sometimes raid the fridge (railway killer), but leave the body to be found by relatives.

This isn't a Ted Bundy, who initially abducted women off the street, then at the beach, then in their homes. This is a woman who is missing from her home, and it seems evident that she did not wander away. She has her mental and physical faculties at the age of 82.

Not sexual assault (presumably), what else? Who benefits from her death?
