I thought it was surprising the way they found her as well. I thought she would be found held in a building somewhere or at least hidden if she was killed, but she was found out in the open on the side of road where a passing car could see her.

I can think of at least 3 possible scenarios (in no particular order):

1. Second suspect was holding Sandra and killed her when the woman getting the ransom money was arrested

2. Woman who collected ransom had already killed Sandra when she went to get the money

3. Woman collecting ransom never had Sandra at all and thought she could collect ransom money and get away with it--Sandra died from something/someone else?

I'm going with 1. Gardener. I'm sure there must be someone else involved in all of this.

Any thoughts as to motive? Jealousy might make sense if Sandra were younger. Maybe TW was angry with RH like someone suggested upthread as in a good loan gone bad. Someone gone off their meds? Wanting to buy drugs? I am trying to make sense of the ransom scenario but am really struggling.

I'm thinking along the lines of "well she's dead anyway, let's try to get some money out of it". Two perps. The arrested one was the dupe; and Sandra was dead before the ransom demand was made. What a waste. Poor Sandra and her family. I vote that drugs are behind this - not Sandra, just the main perp, who I believe is known and will be picked up shortly.

Just to add a little more;

Those who knew Wiltse say she used to work as a prision employee at Coyote Ridge Corrections Center, along with her husband who is currently a prison guard.

Members of the community described Wiltse and her husband as quiet people who mostly kept to themselves.

I'm thinking drug-related as well. The whole thing is so irrational and "out-there," I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind doing something like this. Who would think that they wouldn't be caught after ransom exchange in this day and age ("Local and federal law enforcement agencies contacted a kidnapper and negotiated for several hours, ultimately agreeing to pay the ransom." BBM)?

One possible scenario: The perp(s) think Sandra and her husband have a fair amount of cash and/or valuable items stashed away at home due to the husband's jewelry/pawn business and break into the house thinking that no one is there; Sandra happens upon the scene of the crime, the perp(s) flee the scene, taking Sandra with them, but they kill her as soon as Sandra gives up her cell phone and the number for her husband's number at work, in order to eliminate the witness:

"Kennewick Police Sgt. Ken Lattin said 69-year-old Sandra Harris was taken Friday by someone she knew. Lattin said her abductor then used Harris' cellphone to call her husband at work to demand an undisclosed amount of money in exchange for her return.

'This was not a random act,' Lattin said. 'They're not related. We're not exactly sure what the nature of the relationship was, but this was not random.'" (BBM)

Angry that they weren't able to take anything from the home, they then demand a ransom. Poor Sandra ... she must have been so scared :(.

Yeah, you would have to be really high or really desperate to get high to think that this could work on any level.

Poor Sandra. How terrifying.

I'll go with #2. Simpler the better.

KENNEWICK, Wash. – The woman accused of kidnapping a 69-year-old Kennewick woman who was found dead Sunday appeared in Benton County Court Monday afternoon on first degree kidnapping charges.
...
A recently released police report on the arrest of Wiltse says she told authorities two other men, by the name of "Jose" and "Jesus" were also involved in the crime.

Police said blood was seen on the seat of the vehicle Wiltse was found in and Kennewick police say they believe Wiltse has a much larger role in the incident than she says.

What a weird case. RIP Sandra. :rose:

Option #2.

A woman acknowledged kidnapping a woman she knew and picking up a $250,000 ransom that authorities handed over in hopes of the safe return of the victim, but her body was found along a rural road two days later, a police report said Monday.

Police tailed and arrested Theresa Wiltse, 49, after she got the ransom for Sandra Harris, 69, at a gourmet grocery store Friday night, the document said.

Theresa confessed to being part of the kidnapping," along with two men she identified only as "Jose" and "Jesus," the report said.

But her "role appears to be much bigger than she claims," police wrote, adding that blood was found in the backseat of Wiltse's vehicle and it was being analyzed.

Harris appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound, but an autopsy will be conducted later this week to establish when and how she died, prosecutors said. A driver found Sandra Harris' body Sunday in arid scrubland along a road south of Kennewick, off Interstate 82.

The kidnapping was not random — Wiltse knew the victim and her husband, Randy Harris, who owns a pawn shop in the city of Kennewick called Ace Jewelry and Loan, authorities said.

Wiltse lives in the small town of Connell about 40 miles away. She worked as a state prison guard in Walla Walla from 2008 to 2010, when she quit, the Corrections Department said

I am really befuddled with this one. It's quite bizarre. Honestly, what possesses someone to get involved in something like this?

I'm thinking she was dead before the money was handed over. MOO

Poor Sandra. RIP

I agree, it's a very weird case.
It's very upsetting.
Now there's a Jose and Jesus.

Wiltse, who was booked on suspicion of kidnapping, had her bail set at $1 million during a brief court appearance. Prosecutors have until Wednesday to charge her.

Benton County public defender Eric Hsu, whose office is representing Wiltse, declined to comment Monday.

Police only have Wiltse in custody but said they were not ruling
out the possibility of additional arrests.

“But we do not have any specific persons that we are looking for,” according to police in the community about 130 miles southwest of Spokane.

So do Jose and Jesus exist?

The $250,000 ransom was suspiciously low to begin with for even one person to take that kind of chance to kidnap and negotiate, but it's ridiculously low to split between three people. Whatever the plan, it was senseless and way too risky.

Is Wiltse imagining a Jose and Jesus? I have so many questions I hope are answered eventually. How did they know each other? Why was the car rented in California?

So sorry at this outcome.

I wonder why they allowed cameras in the courtroom? Does anyone have any guesses to the connection between TW and SH and her family? BBM

Benton County Prosecutor Andy Miller expects to formally charge Wiltse within three days, or by 5 p.m. Wednesday. A booking photo was not available. Miller said releasing it could hurt prosecutors’ case against Wiltse.
