A man who was shot with a crossbow bolt as he adjusted his satellite dish on Good Friday has died, North Wales police have said. Gerald Corrigan, 74, was struck at his home in Holyhead in Anglesey. The bolt travelled through a significant part of his upper body, narrowly missing his heart and then passing through his right arm. Police said Corrigan died on 11 May “as a result of the horrendous injuries he sustained after being shot”.

His family issued a statement after what they called a “shocking incident”, saying they could not think of anyone who may have wanted to harm him.

The force said it is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have previously said one line of inquiry is that Corrigan may have been accidentally shot by a lamper – a rogue night-time hunter who uses bright lights to target animals.

Omg how horrible, his poor family. Who would do such a thing? I was on Anglesey last summer, beautiful place.

The more I think about this the more I'm seeing a planned event here.
What if the satellite dish was intentionally disabled so that GC would come outside?
How good of a shot would you have to be to hit a person in the dark with a crossbow?

I think the house is down a dead end narrow lane. The killer probably walked in.

The area is quite remote but there are some other other homes nearby. There is a hotel which also has a caravan and camping site less than a mile away. As it was the Easter school holidays that place would have had quite a few visitors staying there.

Who would kill a retired professor? It sounds like an episode of Morse! Moo

Starting to wonder if crossbows as a murder weapon is a new "thing"?
In Toronto there has been several incidents in recent years where a crossbow has been used to kill, or nearly kill people.
The most recent was the most bizarre, perhaps even stranger than getting shot by one after midnight, whilst the victim adjusted his satellite dish!
There is cctv in this one. imo.fwiw.
Canada - Suspect posing as delivery man shot woman with crossbow, Toronto (Mississauga), Nov. 2018
Omg that is awful, that poor woman! I do think the thief and the crossbow guy look like one and the same person. Moo

...that is horrible, poor woman, I hope they catch the perp in that case, well done Dotr for putting the two cases together, it could be coincidence but I don't think so.

It is interesting to note that in the Metro they show a picture of the dish, I'd assume it was on a roof or much higher but I guess given the remoteness of some places the dish can be positioned quite low to the ground.

I came across this article from 2004 about Lamping, perhaps given the position Gerald was in when adjusting his dish, was he indeed mistaken for another animal. Last paragraph is quite telling.

Crossbow death 'largest' murder hunt
"Police said someone on the island probably held the key to why and how Mr Corrigan was killed.

"I do believe the answer is out there amongst the public, and I would appeal for anyone that has any information regarding that - no matter how insignificant - to come forward," said Det Ch Insp Brian Kearney, who is leading the investigation.

Asked whether Mr Corrigan had been deliberately targeted, the detective said: "We continue to keep an open mind regarding the full circumstances, and until we know and establish the full facts - I am unable to say."
The victim had been a photography and video lecturer in Lancashire before retiring to the island about 20 years ago."

"North Wales Police said it had been speaking to crossbow specialists, manufacturers and retailers as part of the inquiry, in an attempt to track down the weapon used."

I looked into how practical it is to use a crossbow at night. Apparently you can buy a night vision scope that works sort of like a scope on a rifle.
