A Springfield family is still reeling from the deaths of their three granddaughters, who were found slain earlier this week inside their River Falls, Wis., home, the girls’ great-uncle said Thursday.

Some family members have already gathered in northwestern Wisconsin, and others are on their way, Watt said. Funeral arrangements are still pending, he said.

yesterday they were making it sound like he'd left the gas on. Not that it makes killing your daughters any less awful, but at least they would've just fallen asleep. I was totally unprepared when they elaborated today.

Ya, it's like how I felt with the Josh Powell case. It was bad enough knowing these men murdered their innocent children, but the savagery is heartbreaking.

I get choked up reading all/any of these cases and think about how the children could even process the fact their father is killing them - and having that be their last thought alive.

Police found a horrifying scene at the Schaffhausen family home in the western Wisconsin city of River Falls last July: three girls dead in their beds, their throats slashed. In the basement, gasoline was sloshed in a possible attempt to burn down their mother's house.

This week, the girls' father goes on trial to determine whether he was insane at the time. Aaron Schaffhausen last week conceded guilt on three counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one of attempted arson, but maintained that he's not responsible for his actions due to mental illness.

Prosecutors argue Schaffhausen was perfectly aware of what he was doing, and killed 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia because he was still bitter about their divorce and furious because he thought she had begun seeing another man. Their evidence, according to a criminal complaint, includes a chilling statement to his ex-wife right after the killings: "You can come home now because I killed the kids."

Attorneys will begin the challenging task of assembling an unbiased jury to decide whether admitted murderer Aaron Schaffhausen was legally insane when he killed his 3 daughters in July of 2012.

Schaffhausen changed the scope of the trial last Thursday when he changed his plea in the case from not guilty by reason of insanity to guilty, while still claiming he was insane when he slashed the throats of his daughters, 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia.
