Family of slain UW student Brittany Zimmermann still looking for answers

If the DNA doesn't match the three guys convicted of the break in, and it didn't come from CODIS, who the heck does it belong to???
I've always had a theory, but no way to prove or disprove it really. After Kelly's murder, things happened that caught my attention. Now that I see evidence was "lost" in 4 other cases that could have been related...it makes me even more interested in that particular person. He was well connected on many levels in the area.

I remember when this first happen. I had just moved to Madison at the age of 19. I lived just a few blocks from Doty St. I was terrified of who ever killed her. I remember seeing her apartment for rent not to long after for very cheap.
So sad they never found her killer. With the DNA they've got all we can do is wait sooner or later the perp will slip up.

‘Justice for Brittany’: Family confirms DNA match in Brittany Zimmermann cold case

http://watchdog.org/256919/brittany-zimmerman-dna-madison/

“We are confirming that there was a DNA match in our daughter Brittany’s homicide investigation,” the Zimmermans said in a statement issued Tuesday to McKenna and Watchdog.org.

They said they are choosing not to release the individual’s name at this time because Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne is not prepared to file charges.

Sources with knowledge of the investigation tell Wisconsin Watchdog that the Madison Police Department has long had compelling evidence and a possible suspect in the Zimmermann case but has failed to make arrests in the “cold case.”

The person whose DNA was found to be a match, according to a source with knowledge of the case, is well known to police and admitted to being inside Zimmermann’s apartment the day of the homicide. The man told police that Zimmermann had invited him in for a beer, according to the source. Asked why his DNA was found on Zimmermann, the man replied that he had hugged her to signal his appreciation for the beer.

I can't even imagine being her parents and family knowing that this person has just been walking around free for so long.

If the DNA doesn't match the three guys convicted of the break in, and it didn't come from CODIS, who the heck does it belong to???

It matches one of the four people involved in the July 9, 2008 burglary at Blue Moon Bar and Grill in Madison, WI, where this person had cut himself on some glass. The other three people involved in that burglary aren't talking and/or denying there was a fourth burglar.

http://host.madison.com/wsj/news/local/crime_and_courts/police-look-at-link-to-burglary-in-zimmermann-homicide/article_1b79e490-0604-11e0-8c35-001cc4c002e0.html

(2010 article) A fingerprint found on the window was matched to Spencer L. Hutchins, now 20, who, along with Darrielle L. Banks and Ryan K. Cook, both now 19, admitted involvement in the burglary. The three also admitted to burglarizing three other nearby businesses the same night.

Spencer L. Hutchins is incarcerated at Oshkosh Correctional Institution, Oshkosh, WI until 02/24/2018 for having Sex with a Child Age 16 or Older and bail jumping according to WCCA. The article above infers that he knows who the fourth burglar is that is suspected of killing Zimmerman.

Of course the below article excerpt states the police already know that person's identity. They probably don't have enough evidence.

Another of the burglars at the Blue Moon Bar and Grill in Madison, WI, was Darrielle L. Banks, age 25, where the blood DNA at the bar matched DNA at the Zimmerman murder scene. He is currently incarcerated at the Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution, Plymouth, WI. His Mandatory Release/Extended Supervision Date is 11/28/2017.

He also denies there was a fourth burglar

This case is also currently being discussed at WS's Kelly Nolan thread. She is another unsolved murder victim. If I understand correctly, a poster there is stating that DNA was planted at one of the murder scenes.

I'm continuing this conversation from WS's Kelly Nolan page since it is about Brittany Zimmerman.

The poster, concernedcitizen912, had linked to his/her blog (below link) about a suspect whose case was highlighted on the front page of the MSJ.

https://concernedcitizen912.wordpress.com/2015/12/01/madison-murder-mystery/

I pdf'ed that article and posted it to the below link. The person arrested was William C. Workman who had previously lived in Ithaca, NY and Washington, DC., as well as overseas. Madison addresses were:

222 Merry St #16, Madison, WI
2934 Milwaukee St #1, Madison, WI
1331 Morrison St, Madison, WI

He was charged with 15 counts of Capturing an Image of Nudity

USSearch shows William C. Workman also lived at 13453 Polly Hubbard, Saint Albans, VT 05478-6043. It's possible that that specific address may be corrupted since Polly Hubbard addresses only runs from 25 thru 3057.

According to these articles at

http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2016/01/brianna_maitland_missing_in_ve.html

http://www.wnd.com/2006/03/35310/

Brianna Maitland was abducted March 19, 2004 and never found.

If there could be shown some connection to Workman and Brianna (whose second job was in Saint Albans while he lived at the above address and if NHSP could identify the unidentified woman as Brianna, it might be a lead as to what happened to her. I would suppose that the NHSP would be able to obtain a still photo of the unidentified woman on the tape from the Madison, WI Police Department.

So is the alleged fourth burglar the guy mentioned here? I thought it was someone younger. Was it his DNA that was matched?

Sex offender admits to being at Zimmermann's home day of student's homicide

In an interview with 27 News, a registered sex offender admits to being at the home of former UW-Madison student Brittany Zimmermann on the day of her unsolved homicide.

But 49-year-old David Kahl tells 27 News he was not responsible for the 21-year coed's 2008 death.

"I had a glass of water from her," Kahl says. "I can't remember if I shook her hand, gave her a hug, thanked her for loaning me the money," Kahl tells 27 News of the encounter.

Kahl indicts his friends, who he declines to identify, as other than homeless.

"They were going to go back, rob her, or get the rest of the money," Kahl tells 27 News.

Kahl claims investigators have cleared him of anything other than being a witness.

He was arrested again a few days ago:

Two possible suspects who were with David A. Kahl:

"Hank" and "Mitchell.

I see Kahl lives only 5 miles from where Kelly Nolan's body was found on Schneider Road across from Triple K Stables.

Why haven't police released that sketch to the public? It's either "Hank" or "Mitchell" and probably the one who Kahl told the police was the one who carried a knife. One of these two may also have been involved in the bar burglary or also went in to the bar later (independent of the others) after the others burglarized it and cut himself. It's been almost eight years.

If the police can't find Hank or Mitchell, maybe the public will recognize one of them from the sketch, if they release it. They also need to release the race of these two suspects who were going back to rob Brittany of the rest of her money.

http://www.wkow.com/story/8478130/only-on-27-news-material-witness-in-zimmermann-murder-investigation

In court documents filed by a Wisconsin Department of Corrections probation agent, Zimmermann's April 2 murder is cited in a request to revoke Kahl's probation. "Mr. Kahl was a material witness in the death of a coed that was discovered on Doty St.," wrote agent Allen Matheus. In the court documents, it's alleged Kahl approached people with a ruse about a car repair to try to get money to buy crack cocaine, including intruding into a home on West Washington Avenue two blocks from the murder scene. The documents state Kahl told authorities about two other men who were also running scams to get money. Kahl told authorities who only knew these men by the first names of "Hank" and "Mitchell." According to the documents, Kahl told authorities on the day of Zimmermann's killing, the two homeless men and Kahl used drugs at "a crack house on Wilson St.," and then separated. "I also know they were going into houses that were unsecured and stealing things like cell phones and laptop computers," Kahl related in a handwritten statement submitted to corrections officials. Documents show Kahl helped police develop a sketch of one of the homeless men wanted for questioning.

Also Kahl's statement above, where he states they were going back to rob Brittany, conflicts with his statement below where he said they did not work together.

http://host.madison.com/news/local/no-main-suspect-in-death-of-coed-police-are-questioning/article_29c82d4b-63d2-51d5-ac9c-fc12b3c6ca24.html

In an interview the next day, Kahl identified the men to his agent as "Hank" and "Mitchell." He said that while they ran the same scam as him, they did not work together. He said he did not know their last names.

According to the search warrant, police received a report from the state Crime Lab on Dec. 9, 2014, indicating that a DNA profile taken from the right sleeve of a shirt worn by Zimmermann on April 2, 2008, had hit the DNA profile of Kahl...

During an interview on Dec. 17, 2014, Scoles told police that he was close to Kahl, calling him his “brother.” Scoles said that Kahl had told him what happened to Zimmermann, but Scoles refused to provide details, saying that he didn’t want to provide any more information without getting some kind of deal in exchange...

The search warrant sought emails in Scoles’ account at the prison, including any he sent or received, along with deleted and draft messages and any messages Scoles had saved. It also sought data related to telephone calls Scoles made from prison, and any and all recorded conversations.

If Kahl (or anyone else) was trying to rob Zimmermann they have a strange way of going about it. The killer kicked the front door down, in broad daylight for anyone to see, then beat her and stabbed her to death and stole nothing? Like the Marino murder there was no motive.

Unbelievable that even with a DNA match no arrest has been made. Sad.

If I had to guess, "Hank" and "Mitchell" don't exist. The above is an interesting recap of the case. It's part 2 of a 2 part series, part 1 reflects some frustrations with the investigation by her fiancée and family.

Part I shows a seven minute response time to Gonnering's 911 call. That's a long time, though it's better than a no response time for the previous 911 call by Zimmerman.

I agree, Hank and Mitchell possibly don't exist. Why won't the Madison police release the sketch they made of another suspect with Kahl's help?

http://wisconsingazette.com/2016/07/14/who-killed-brittany-zimmermann/

WCCA shows Kahl living in Oregon, WI in 2010, 4.6 miles from the 2007 Kelly Nolan murder scene. Google maps shows the distance from his residence to that murder scene. i wonder if he lived there in 2007?

https://goo.gl/maps/8U56oFaDrpy

Distance from Kelly Nolan apartment to Zimmerman apartment. 3 blocks.

Brittany's 911 call is one of the many really troubling aspects of this case. But you're right, 7 minutes in that neighborhood (in the heart of town), under those circumstances is a less than ideal response. I also am troubled by the lack of transparency in both this case and Kelly Nolan's murder and don't understand holding back suspect sketches.

I'm curious about the DNA match from the pizza place robbery. It just seems strange. Kahl was never arrested for that crime but his DNA was found at the scene? Why wasn't he arrested if those other three were? The differences in age and race between Kahl and those arrested makes me wonder what their connection was, if any...

I also found it interesting that Brittany's fiance wouldn't comment on whether there were signs of sexual assault. Adds another horrific aspect to the crime if that were to be the case...

Andrew J. Scoles, 38, said he wants two felony convictions expunged from his criminal record in exchange for giving Madison police more details about what his friend and former roommate David Kahl told him while allegedly confessing to killing Zimmermann, a UW student, in April 2008. One of the convictions is federal, which requires a president pardon.

CROSS PLAINS MAN CHARGED WITH GUN CRIME

Andrew J. Scoles, 35, Cross Plains, Wis., is charged with being a felon in possession of ammunition. The indictment alleges that he possessed .300 Magnum ammunition on December 22, 2013.

If convicted, Scoles faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of this case will be handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter M. Jarosz.

Scoles sounds like a real piece of work. The guy is more concerned with getting his guns back than bringing a murderer to justice. Smh...
