I can't even imagine how this could be unimaginable.

Quote RSBM.
I was being emotional there as of course it's not literally "unimaginable." Luckily I don't know anyone who would not want to know the fate of their own teenager or sibling (if that is even the case here) or would disown one (tragic when that happens.)

This is local to me and I have not seen anything on any news source within the last few months. I would assume the family just wants privacy/case closed.
The IA said back in like March that they're close but were waiting for more results, but this case has moved notoriously slow. Nobody has definitively said that the case was closed yet either.

Yeah, couldn’t tell you anymore updates locally. It sucks that we have to wait but I’m certain that there are a lot of other crimes in the area they are also dealing with - including the sexual assault kit backlog at the state crime lab.

I doubt it as they're the ones who came to the project in the first place. Plus that'd be extremely petty for a law enforcement office. They're just working on confirming the identity.
What’s making it take so long to confirm the identity though it’s been 3 years since the tentative identification

I have no idea what the process is, but they could be trying to contact next of kin or confirming with DNA tests, since COVID probably slowed down the process by a lot. I'm 99.9% positive that it's not law enforcement just withholding details because they have a grudge against the DDP or they don't want to. They came to them in the first place for genealogy so them turning around and being mad at them for doing what they were asked makes no sense.

I believe that one of the JCD original invetigators now even volunteers with DDP (Jack Friess).

Obviously just my speculation, but the confirmation holdup probably has something to do with lab work, difficulty locating next of kin (or absence of NOK to a certain degree), or perhaps the family is refusing to cooperate or accept the ID.
