Deputies responded to a residence on Highway 8 east of Barron that was asking for help shortly before 1 a.m. When deputies arrived, they found two deceased adults. Jayme Closs, 13, is considered "missing and endangered." Jayme is described as 5' tall, 100 pounds and has green eyes and blond or strawberry blond hair.

12:58 a.m. – Barron Co. receives 911 call from 1268 Hwy. 8. Nobody speaks back to dispatchers.
– Deputies find James and Denise dead from gunshots. Daughter Jayme is missing
– FBI, DCI arrive at home on Highway 8. Search of the area begins

6:56 a.m. – Sheriff’s Dept. puts out notice on social media and to local media of missing teen.
– Sheriff’s Dept. interviews school staff at Riverview Middle School – where Jayme attends.

3:23 p.m. – AMBER Alert is sent out for Jayme.

In no way will we allow ANYONE to suggest that a minority group, a gang, the Nazi's or a coven of witches are the ones who killed Jayme's parents and kidnapped her.

If anyone hints, talks around or in anyway suggests a group is responsible for this horrible crime that person will be gone from the discussion. Same thing if you mention anyone as a suspect without evidence.

In Jayme's case, there is no reason to disparage the parents or Jayme. There is no evidence of any issues with Jayme's parents or with Jayme herself.

  • The Smrekars reported hearing two high-powered gunshots after 12:30 a.m. Monday. [2]
  • “I hear one shot and the second shot was even louder yet,” Joan Smrekar said. [26]
  • “It actually sounded like a car backfiring or something quite large,” her husband Tom Smrekar added. [26]
  • "JOAN SMREKAR, CLOSS` NEIGHBOR: We had come home about 11:30. We went to bed about quarter after 12:00. We were not sleeping and we heard the first shot and just a couple seconds is the second shot. And I asked my husband, I said, were those gunshots? Because they were so loud? And he said, yes, and he said, it`s a big gun and I rolled over and looked at the time on my clock, and it said 12:38. My clock is off by seven minutes per the Sheriff`s department, so this happened roughly around 12:30." [27]

    • Captioned by Daily Mail as "what appeared to be a rifle bag, a rake and several duffel sized bags" [25]
    • Some think they are rifle bags which could have been removed from the home. Others have mentioned they are unlikely to be evidence from the home as the officers are not handling them with gloves.
    • Another theory is that the bag contains a metal detector, and the rakes could have been used in searching or clearing brush while using the metal detectors. Further detail in this post by rainynights
  • No gun was found at the scene [1]
  • It is unclear if Jayme took any of her personal items with her. Fitzgerald said he was working on gathering information if she had a phone or other items she would have definitely taken with her. [16]

They may try to find new information about the investigation or, they may quickly turn off the news and social media or try to redirect conversations about the victims or their families.

• The search for Jayme Closs has continued to intensify and serious unrelated criminal activity was uncovered in the Barron area and law enforcement action was deemed necessary [3]

If Jayme turns up alive (hopefully) or not, she and/or her family may one day read your posts. Be sure that you are comfortable with that thought. As @Tricia frequently reminds us, words have power. Be willing to stand behind what you post with the full knowledge that a 13 year old child is missing and her parents have been brutally murdered.

We are getting a lot of alerts that some posters are blaming the victim. While it is NOT okay at all to state that Jayme is definitely responsible for any part of this crime or her disappearance, we are allowing members to state their opinion that Jayme could be involved in her own disappearance. This does NOT include blaming members of Jayme's family, such as her aunts or grandparents.

I would also add that you must own your opinions one way or the other in this or any other case. The tests from the BCA should be available soon. Typically takes 30 days on urgent matters and six months on everyday crimes.

I'm curious if a hair strand, boot print, finger print, blood, saliva, bullet casing, cloth material, semen turn up anything. I know I listed a ton, which may or may not have taken place.

Also curious if they located the car and placed a tracker under the bumper by now. Unfortunately, tracker batteries are only good for few days, so constantly updating it is required. Shame it wasn't a GM with onstar.

Next... wonder if they needed a GPS to get to Barron? As google or Waze has analytics data to show who was in area. So must be an individual with insight to area.

No cell ping info either. Sad. So either no cell or a regular pinger in the area

Why was van backed onto yard? This part drives my brain to hurt. A possible twist to the case.

They say JC was there at time of crime. So guessing small foot prints in blood found. Which footprint size matched shoes in home or semen found on her bed and/or her cell phone lying on her bed as they have no JC phone to follow cell pings.

Sheriff Fitzgerald says they are reviewing 80 videos from area surveillance plus doing forensic analysis of about 40 pieces of physical evidence-per day. Guessing from house, yard & 2000 person search. He says the case reminds him of the Jacob Wetterling case- which was solved after 27 years, committed by an original POI & registered sex offender. In Barron, there are 23 registered sex offenders within THREE MILES of the Closs home. LE has interviewed all of them, reviewed the info, AND GONE BACK when something didn’t add up. So... IMO, they have a POI or POIs, but don’t have enough physical evidence for an arrest. Let’s hope forensic testing secures some long before 27 years have passed.

PS: I hope LE uses the radar technology posted late in the previous thread, to check those 23 houses for a living person who is not supposed to be there- before case law/ privacy laws prevent them from doing so.

Thanks to all who posted such excellent pics of the chair. Is it possible the chair was slammed down with the front left leg taking the upward impact? If the chair is old the wood could have been dry. After looking up wood chair repair it seems common for seats to split or weaken in that area when they are older. Maybe a heavy impact would cause the splintering? IDK just guessing.

The sad part is, 23 are registered but they have not disclosed the amount of level 1s and 2s. So maybe upward of a 100. I talked more about this in the teens thread, 11 or 12 or 13... who knows the thread number. Again, just glad they are finally cleaning house in town

Just thought in reference to the sex offenders. I was once called to the bench to answer a question about a PSI I had conducted on a Def who was being sentenced. The defendant had a pretty serious rape conviction from many years prior. The Judge (believe it or not they don't know everything and are just as human as you or I) asked me if the D was registered. The Def wasn't nor was he required to be as his conviction was prior to law change. My point is that there are sex offenders who aren't' registered and BCI doesn't always have old information when you pull a LEADS on someone. Just throwing this out there for anyone leaning in the sex offender direction.

I don’t think the chair looks old, or the wood dry. I have a thing for old chairs, so I’ve seen the kinds of splits in the seat you are speaking of. However, because old chairs are so dry, the split would likely be a pretty clean one if you were to slam it down. I don’t think you would see that kind of splintering unless we’re talking about another object being forced into the crack...such as an ax. I find these up close pics of the chair rather disturbing because I can’t think what else could have caused this damage.

I am clueless about phones, and just own a basic phone that dials and texts...but I had thought these days that phones would ping even if turned off, and that batteries were next to impossible to remove nowadays...and that SIM cards were not removable in Iphones...I know I must be wrong about some of these things...or the phone would have been traced.

However, because old chairs are so dry, the split would likely be a pretty clean one if you were to slam it down. I don’t think you would see that kind of splintering unless we’re talking about another object being forced into the crack...such as an ax. I find these up close pics of the chair rather disturbing because I can’t think what else could have caused this damage.

Expanding on this, the chair in made of oak, one of the hardest woods available. All the wood work in century homes is generally oak, simply because its indestructible. In fact, I think even if you hit a chair with an axe, you'd have a very hard time causing that much damage.
