A Wisconsin teen’s mother is hoping for answers in connection with her 15-year-old daughter, who she hasn’t seen in nearly eight months.

************
Joniah’s father was scheduled to pick her up at 4 p.m. from her home on the day she disappeared, so she could go get a work permit. When Joniah never arrived home, Howard became worried.

A Ring camera from a neighbor’s home showed Joniah leaving her residence on June 23 at around 2:30 p.m. Cellphone records indicate that she tried to call her therapist at about 3:27 p.m. and then later that evening, texted her therapist, and wrote she ran away from home.

Since then, no one has heard from her, according to her mother.

“Even though it may look on the surface that the child left their home under their own power, under their own two feet, they may have left it under false pretenses,” John Bischoff, vice president of the center’s Missing Children Division, said.

For Tanesha Howard, whose 15-year-old daughter Joniah Walker disappeared in Wisconsin in 2022, the terror is unending.

“I can’t sleep, I can’t eat,” she tells PEOPLE. “I want her back so badly.”

It was a normal summer morning in 2022, or so it seemed, when social services worker Tanesha Howard gave her 15-year-old daughter Joniah Walker a kiss and a hug before leaving the family’s house in Milwaukee.

Hours later she called Joniah from work to tell her that Joniah’s father had plans to pick up the teenager that afternoon and take her to get a work permit for her new job at a pizzeria.

“She said, ‘Okay!’” recalls Howard. “That was the last time I talked to her.”

At 3:30 p.m. Joniah’s dad came to pick her up. But Joniah was nowhere to be found. Her dad tried calling her but she didn’t answer her phone.

“I didn’t know if somebody snatched her off the streets,” says Howard.

A neighbor’s doorbell camera captured footage of Joniah leaving home that day with a large backpack, leading Howard to suspect her daughter had been lured away by someone. “I have a feeling in my heart,” says Howard. “She’s still alive.”

Details of Disappearance

Joniah was last seen in the 400 block of West Brown Street, near the intersection of East Reservoir Avenue and North Buffum Street, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 2:30 p.m. on June 23, 2022. She exchanged text messages with her mother at work that afternoon. At 3:27 p.m. she tried to call her therapist.

Joniah's father was supposed to pick her up at her house at 3:30 or 4:00 p.m. so she could apply for the work permit necessary for her to get a summer job. When he arrived, she wasn't there, and when both her parents tried to call her, both times their calls went straight to voicemail. That night, Joniah sent her a therapist a text saying she was running away from home. She has never been heard from again.

Because of her mental illness and shy nature, Joniah's family is concerned for her safety and believe she could be in a vulnerable state. Her mother doesn't think she would have decided to run away on her own and believes she may have been convinced to leave home by someone she met online. Her case remains unsolved.

What a sad case. I hope the FBI is taking part and has managed to locate and analyze all possible digital data by now. She must have had some destination in mind.

I hope Joniah is safe somewhere and contacts her family very soon. It's clear her parents would welcome her back with love...

Very sad, I cannot imagine how hard this is for her mom. She looks like a sweet little girl. Very likely she was lured & trafficked and is now being held against her will. She is probably so ashamed she feels like she cannot go back home, even if she could get away. JMO.

Came here looking for discussions on Joniah, and I'm shocked to see her thread is pretty short. :(.

Her story reminds me a bit of Alicia Navarro and Mikayla Bali.

If anyone local has any insight, I'm interested in hearing it. It looks like commenting on her Facebook group page has been shut off by admins.

Her sweet and innocent face gets me everytime. Hopefully we have answers soon!!!

I don’t know, as stated above, that she had a place in mind to go. The newspaper article I read said she had a history of mental illness. Thus it’s entirely possible she wandered off, confused. I’ll search my best online, the only way I can.

If she left with a backpack her mother didn't recognize, maybe someone gave her the backpack as a scam ("deliver this and earn some money?"), or maybe she was lured away and packed a secret backpack to leave with as soon as the person contacted her? Poor Joniah. I hope she's okay and is found very soon.

Over the years, Howard says her daughter became less involved in their home and more engaged online.

“She was just online doing stuff she had no business doing.”
"I know she went with somebody online. I don't know where she met them at, I don't know if she got on the bus or if she hitched a ride," Howard said.
snipped + bbm from article. i wonder if mom is speaking from a gut feeling or if there is more info here.

also — what stuff online did JW have “no business doing”? again, did mom find out the online behavior retroactively, or did she catch her daughter on apps she shouldn’t be on (ie tinder)? just speculation

also, it looks like JW had airpods in that surveillance camera. those can be tracked. wonder if anybody ever did?

There's a missing page for her that sadly has very little posts/members. Mum is an admin.
The only one who needs to see it is Joniah, and hopefully she will and will come home.
Joniah's FB, nothing since 2020 Log into Facebook
I'll say this. Most kids missing just 2 years are still on only NCMEC. Joniah's mother moved mountains and managed to get her on NaMus, in the news, and talked about. Bless her.
