That is a preposterous accusation. I assume that you mean that a large amount of public money is being spent on the investigation because of the family’s social status? And that a poor family would get a cursory glance?

Tell me where that has happened before.
I read that more from a different point of view. I was reading that in a manner which made me ask: What were this poor young girl's final moments? How can those responsible be free walking the streets? Certainly the authorities are not agreeing that poor young Selah, did not bring this upon herself?! Please tell me they will seek justice for this child. How in the world do you convince me otherwise? Is there really an otherwise to this death?

An ensuing autopsy showed the scope of the girl's injuries. The doctor found "acute and mixed blunt head trauma" and facial injuries, as well as heart, lung and chest injuries "consistent with a blackjack or similar (club-type) device."
These are Christian's who brutalized this poor soul????? Beware the wolf in sheep's clothing!!!!!!!

Seems like a lot of kids are dying from "falls" this month. <sarcasm>

I think we'll soon hear even more horror stories about what went on in that home. An article I linked upthread mentioned Selah was placed with the Barrys by some sort of church involvement. If that's true I'd like to hear more about that.

And I don't believe a word the women are saying about the numerous falls; IMO they were "disciplining" her, either for "religious" purposes or just plain old evilness.
I'll go with pure evilness. No other way to describe this.

Here's the Criminal Complaint:

I'm not able to cut and paste from the PDF for some reason so read it for yourselves to get the whole story. The short version:

The Kadens used to live in Wisconsin and knew the Barrys. They moved to NC in 2011. In 2014 the Barrys provided respite care for Selah's older sister.

April 2017 Selah began receiving psychiatric treatment, including meds. By August her behavior worsened and they applied for respite care in NC.

In 2018 another one of the Kadens' children needed surgery and would require long term care. The NC respite care provider was unable to provide long term respite for Selah so the Kadens again asked the Barrys to help.

David Kaden brought Selah to the Barrys on April 24, 2018, to spend the summer.

May 24, 2018 was the last time Selah's mom spoke to her by phone.

Laurie Barry stated that during May 28, 29 and 30 Selah fell and self-injured multiple times. On May 31 she had a particularly serious fall. Alexis and Laurie Barry checked on Selah throughout the day. When Jesse Barry (who has not been charged) arrived home he determined that 911 be called.

There's much, much more in the doc (6 pages).
My eyeballs about rattled right out of my head over that story.

Watching the court appearance Alexis Barry looks so POed that she's even there. As if her Bible Thumpin Homeschool cred ought to exempt her from being held accountable, and like Selah's life was worthless, and doesn't matter. SMH.
MOO

She should thank her lucky stars she’s not sitting in jail waiting for trial as most defendants do in murder cases.:mad::mad::confused:

No trial date mentioned.
Iowa County Sheriff's Office Detective Brian Fitzsimons said an EMT "described that she had a hard time getting an air way in, that Selah's teeth or jaw was somewhat clenched, and that her caregivers seemed suspicious and were not overly concerned with the victim's condition."

Doctors told detectives that they believed Kaden had died hours before the Barrys called 911.

Cripes!

UW forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Stier testified the girl suffered over fifty “impact-injuries” over body that were not consistent with harming herself. Stier said the teen’s condition showed she had been suffocated and beaten over time, and had worn a diaper.

“That’s why, one of the reasons why I use for the first time in my profession the word ‘torture,’ ” Stier said. “Because this child was suffering.”

“It is also not a fast death to smother or suffocate because this takes minutes of applied force,” Stier testified.

Defense attorney suggested it might have been the donkeys on the property that caused Selah's injuries. SMDH.

The third adult, Laurie Barry's husband - who has not been charged in this case but mentioned in the Criminal Complaint - is a convicted felon and IMO should have been charged also. I can't say anything more but feel free to Google this person. What a despicable family, putting themselves out as "Christians" while torturing an innocent child to death. I'm grateful the forensic pathologist was able to bust through their flimsy excuses for Selah's injuries. Nasty people. Bah.

Poor Selah... she clearly went through hell in that house.

For the defense attorney: I'm pretty sure the coroner can tell the difference between marks caused by a blackjack and marks caused by a donkey. For starters, anyone who has tended hooved animals know that their kicks leave bruises which are, well, hoof-shaped. It's actually pretty unmistakable, and particularly so once they are in the middle of the healing process:

'I was blinded with pain' Shocking bruises after woman is kicked by horse

From the beginning of this case, it was clear that something horrid happened to this girl. I can only hope for justice and a swift trial that ends in guilt for these child abusers. I can't even imagine what her time with these creatures was like.
