Events planned to honor missing girls Kayla Berg, Stephanie Low

Two grieving central Wisconsin families that joined forces to search for their missing daughters will host two events this fall to keep the girls' names in the forefront of community conversation.

Kayla Berg of Antigo was 15 years old when she disappeared Aug. 11, 2009. She is one of two young women who have disappeared from the Wausau area in recent years; the other is Stephanie Low, who was reported missing in October 2010.

[snip]

Stephanie Low disappeared Oct. 10, 2010, when she was 22 years old. Police do not consider her case related to Berg's, but Reimer said she will do whatever it takes to find answers in both girls' disappearances.

Please let this be the break that brings Stephanie home!

Court records: Man admits to slaying of Stephanie Low

A man named a person of interest in the 2010 disappearance of a Wausau woman reportedly told another person that he killed Stephanie Low, removed her body from her apartment and then buried her body, according to court records.

Kristopher Torgerson, 32, has been in the Marathon County Jail the past two weeks on a probation hold and a drug charge and was identified by police Thursday as a possible link to Low’s disappearance.

Happy to see some movement in this case. I hope for Stephanie's parents sake, she is found. I remember the pictures of her Father in a boat searching the water for his little girl. It was heart rending!!

‘Missing Not Forgotten’ helps find those missing

Missing but not Forgotten-that is the message Stephanie Low's family is sending out.

It has been nearly two years since Stephanie disappeared.

Since then her family is fighting to keep Stephanie's memory alive.

It's an old concept with a new twist, printing missing ads on water bottles.

Bumping up for Stephanie. I hope they find this poor girl. Sadly, I believe she is long gone, and not with us anymore, MOO. Wausau is close to where I live, so I am always thinking of her and Kayla Berg. I hope both of these girls are found and their families can have some type of closure and begin to heal, if that is possible.

Wausau police ask hunters to report anything suspicious

Police are reminding hunters that they are still searching for two missing women. The Wausau Police Department sent out a media release Friday asking hunters to be observant if they see anything suspicious during the hunt.

Kayla Berg of Antigo went missing in August of 2009 when she was 15. Stephanie Low of Wausau went missing in October of 2010 when she was 22.

Bumpity bump to the top you go sweetheart......where are you Stephanie!!??

I wonder if any there were ever any charges against this man for this case....
:please:

I live here in Wausau, and I'll do a quick search to see if any other charges were filed against him, or anything else in the papers/media recently. I do remember his name from the news, but I admit I don't watch TV regularly anymore, and I do not subscribe to our local paper.

Hearing the news when she first disappeared I believed there was not much hope that she would be found unharmed. I just wish they could find her and give her family some peace - and peace for the community as well. We've had a big change in demographics and the types of crimes in our town since I moved here 7 years ago. It's not the place it used to be when we moved here... A lot more gang activity, drug activity, and violence (mostly domestic, but still...).

PS - I live only a few blocks off Thomas St.. I had thought her apartment was further North down Grand Ave. about a mile, but I guess I was wrong. I honestly can't place where her apartment would be if it were on Thomas St. though.

PPS - To the person asking the question about Kayla Berg, in re: to the distance between Antigo and Wausau... It is almost 35 miles away, approx. 45 minute drive.

Not sure how much others would like me to post, or some of the protocols as they would apply to this person of interest and the disposition of the unrelated drug charge.

This was from a while back in August - but has different information than the other article linked above. It states that they our police won't comment because they were still investigating at least two other cases that they think he may be involved with (no word on what type of cases those would be).

http://wifc.com/news/articles/2012/aug/24/man-with-drug-charge-still-person-of-interest-in-low-case/

The last I've seen as far as court records is that as of October it was still an open case. I'm googling to find updated info. in a moment. If anyone would like I could post the particulars available publicly - case number, charges filed, motions filed, etc... I just don't know what's appropriate to list, or what's OK to list as he IS a "person of interest", but again, the current charges are not related to Stephanie's disappearance.

Looks like Mr. Torgerson is going to be in our County jail for a while.

The first charge against him was felony possession of Meth.

On Sept. 6, 2012 he is alleged to have committed "Battery by Prisoner" which means that he is alleged to have caused some type of bodily injury against an employer at the jail, a visitor, or a known law enforcement officer. The State is the one pressing charges, so I'm assuming it was against a state employee. This is another Felony charge.

His next hearing is in December 17, 2012 and they have combined the charges, and have apparently linked an old case from 2010 for THC possession and 2 counts of bail jumping for which he pleaded guilty-no contest, to this case as well. In my NON-expert opinion it looks like they are going to try to keep him 'inside' for as long as they possibly can.

Also of note: His first lawyer withdrew on October 8, 2012. He had a separate lawyer for the 2010 case, and he just withdrew as of November 1, 2012.

I'm going to read up a little more on what's going on with his court cases, but that's the gist of it. He's in the county lock-up for the foreseeable future, and IMO that's a very good thing.

He's also got 12 cases listed against him in the public records database going back to 2008. I haven't looked through those to see if there's anything of interest in those, but it would appear he's got some history of trouble, for sure.

BTW: I have something to share that may help the families of both Stephanie Low, and Kayla Berg feel a bit reassured that these cases are NOT being ignored. We homeschool and several times (over the last year or so especially) my daughters have gone out during the daytime downtown (they are into photography). Each time (since it was during school hours), and several times over the summer they have been approached by police officers inquiring about who they were, what they were up to, etc... My daughters pretty much match the descriptions of both girls, so they have definitely NOT stopped looking for either of them. My daughters were worried the first couple of times thinking they might have done something wrong, but the police explained to them that they just had to check them out as they are "looking for runaways" (NOT that Stephanie, or even Kyla are necessarily runaways, just that it's what they told my daughters). It's been a while since they've been approached by LE, but I think they know my kids by now (not for trouble, just from different officers being in contact with them superficially).

OK, a few more notes now that I've read through the available court documents.

First, Mr. Torgerson has a history of multiple guilty verdicts for battery, obstruction of an officer, and Disorderly Conduct since 2008.

Second, I want to make it clear that in re: to the current cases against him he entered a "Not Guilty" plea on November 5, 2012. The next court date is December 17, 2012 for a Status Conference.

The previous for possession of THC from 2010 that was attached to this case was done so because they are prosecuting him as a repeat offender on the drug charge. It is a "Charge Modifier".

No further word on anything to do specifically with Stephanie's case that I've been able to find at this time.

Note: Mr. Torgerson is also known by the name, "Spider". (This info. from court records and MSM.)

I think that's all for now. I was hoping I might be able to do something for Stephanie and her family. I can't imagine their pain... and I too cannot get the image of her father searching the river by himself out of my head. Had I been physically able to participate in her search I would have for sure been there...

SOURCE LINK: The following is a link to an article from which I verified Mr. Torgerson's nickname, and contains corroborating info. re: the previous guilty pleas (besides linking straight to public records database which I don't think can be done). Please note that the article does contain a typo; where it states he was found guilty of felony bail jumping they list the year as 2012. It should be 2010. This article also alludes to the possibility of more information being released "next week" (the date of the article is Aug. 24, 2012), but I don't see any updates at present on this channel's website.

I was reading up on an unrelated case here in Wausau, and ran across an article that jumped out at me in relation to this case...

It turns out that a man who was just recently arrested for holding a woman hostage and abusing her shares the SAME address as KPT (the person of interest in Stephanie's case). It is also the same residence of a man who was arrested for communicating a death threat to a local high school girl a couple months back. I'm sure police are looking at this - how could they not, all things considered...

It's a bit confusing, but police arrested MG for the threats against the HS girl more than 6 weeks ago - the woman was being held at the address and the same apartment that the police searched in relation to the threat! Apparently not knowing she (and apparently her 18 mo. old child) were being held there against their will the whole time.

The woman that MG's roommate JA allegedly held hostage was able to slip a note to a bank teller in a drive-through on Nov. 8th, and police were able to identify her, interview her, and put out a nationwide warrant for JA's arrest who turned himself in to police on Nov. 20th. His preliminary hearing is tomorrow.

I just think this is a bit too coincidental to have someone holding someone hostage in the same duplex/split house as the person of interest in Low's disappearance. Not to mention that his roommate was arrested for making a death threat against a teenage girl, and the whole school really, via text message...

Police: Man who held Weston woman hostage had stolen guns
http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/ar...who-held-Weston-woman-hostage-had-stolen-guns

I just thought this was definitely worth noting...

Also, I am going to assume that these were the other two cases police were investigating that KPT may have been involved in that I mentioned in post #96... I pray they will find answers soon.

PS - JA was armed with hollow-point bullets in his gun when arrested. These guys, IMO, appear to be pretty hard-core criminals. JA is a felon. He's facing up to 93 years in prison on current charges.

I certainly hope this leads to finding out what happened to Stephanie and ya never know, maybe Kayla Berg too! Keeping fingers crossed that this guy talks. Eeesssh, 93 years in prison, he sure as hell as nothing to lose by telling what he may know!! :moo:

I'm reading up more on these other arrests, as well as even more people being investigated by our local PD. Police are saying the investigation into this group of people is continuing, and they said the list of names just keeps getting longer, and longer.

Detectives are stating that there are at least three men currently in custody, and another 2 who are dead who all have connections to gun store robberies here (no time frame given), and that there is definite drug involvement.

As I stated last night (early this morning), both JA and MG - two of the men local media are reporting belong to this group of people have their addresses listed as the same as KPT who is the named POI in Stephanie's case. I have yet to check out the info. available for the other 2 named in a video news report yesterday.

I can supply the link to the video if others are interested in seeing it, however, there is nothing in it that refers to Stephanie, or her case. And, their reporting on the arrest of JA is missing details, and makes it sound much different than the article I linked to about his arrest yesterday.

Keep in mind -- I'm the only one putting these things together simply due to the fact that these people are all sitting in our county jail, three live at the same address, and their charges are remarkably similar. SO remember, please... This is all a hypothesis of mine at the moment. It may be one that the detectives are well-aware of - and they obviously have a lot more to work with than we locals have heard in the media. And, I'm positive that they aren't going to ruin their ongoing investigation by giving us all the details.

I pray that this will lead to more information about Stephanie's disappearance as the older men in these cases - including the bf she was living with, are all around 30yo, and likely know each other - especially given the drugs involved. My husband and I speculate that someone who was aware of SL's bf's apparent drug dealing knew he was in jail and either simply planned to rob their apartment while he was gone and that SL may have tried to stop them. Or, that they took her on purpose in order to keep her bf silent.

Part of me hopes I'm completely out in left-field, but I've got some pretty strong gut feelings at this moment...

I'll be doing more research tonight, and I'll be looking for a report on what happened at JA's preliminary hearing that was held earlier today. I will post more if I find anything super-interesting or coincidental, but for now, there's only circumstantial evidence (I think that's the proper term) for my hypothesis. At least as far as I'm aware.

PS - My daughters just returned home from downtown, and they told me they saw two low-flying helicopters flying back and forth along the river. They decided to change the path they were going to take home as a result. It was too dark to see exactly what type of helicopters they are, and they didn't see any searchlights being used. Just that they were flying very low, back and forth. I don't know of anything going on currently - like someone in the water or anything, and helicopters aren't that common around here - except for flight for life, and I think one or two of our local TV channels now have news choppers. So, it could be the news...

Very very interesting!! Thanks RedHead for keeping us up to date on what is going on up north. Not hearing anything about this further south in Wisconsin. Kinda sad.......but, I hope this leads to this poor girl being brought home to her family :please:
