That prison does sound like one of the most dangerous in the country. Sounds like the foxes are ruling the henhouse.

"Since January 2018, there have been more than 60 documented violent incidents at the prison, which has also been locked down nine times this year 'due to violence',"

"Whitey Bulger is the third inmate to be killed in USP Hazelton just this year."

The family of Whitey Bulger has filed a wrongful death claim against the US government, alleging there was a conspiracy to intentionally harm him

September 23, 2019

"(CNN)Notorious mobster James "Whitey" Bulger died only one day after being transferred to US Penitentiary Hazelton in October 2018.

Almost one year later, his family has filed a wrongful death claim against the US Department of Justice, US Bureau of Prisons and US Marshals Service, alleging a conspiracy among them to deliberately harm him.

"To be clear, we do not believe that the transfer to FCI Hazelton and placement in the general population was simply dangerous, negligent, reckless, and irresponsible; we believe it was also intentional and part of a conspiracy among BOP, DOJ employees, and others to intentionally cause Mr. Bulger's serious injuries and death," Bulger family attorneys Hank Brennan and David Shoen wrote in their letter notifying the Department of Justice of their wrongful death claim...."

The family is seeking $200 million in damages in the forthcoming claim, however, assures that there's no expectation of financial gain as Bulger's estate "is encumbered by millions of dollars in judgments," attorney Hank Brennan told USA TODAY Tuesday.

"This action is the only meaningful avenue to learn the truth and hold accountable each and every government employee who is responsible for the murder of an 89 year-old wheelchair bound man in the Bureau of Prisons’ custody," Brennan said.

The family said in a statement that the 89-year-old man was "deliberately placed in harm's way" when he was transferred to a West Virginia prison and placed in the general inmate population hours before his death.

“There is simply no other explanation for the transfer of someone in his condition and inmate status to be placed in the general population of one of the country’s most violent federal penitentiaries,” they continued to say in the statement.

I thought Johnny Depp as him in the movie was ok, but his contacts though!
Sometimes they filled up almost the entire eyeball, so distracting.
Did anyone else watch it?

I don't know all about his crimes but imo noone should be able to murder someone else or themselves while in prison.
And the woman should be left in peace. You're jailed for harboring a loved one, but not for not speaking up when a loved one (and esp a child) is murdered slowly in front of your eyes.

Whitey Bulger's family: Prison system did not protect him | Daily Mail Online

Nov 3, 2020

Family members of Boston crime boss James 'Whitey' Bulger Jr. have filed a lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Prisons and 30 unnamed employees of the prison system for failing to protect him before he was beaten to death at a West Virginia prison.

The family filed the lawsuit against the prison system last week, two years after Bulger, 89, was killed at United States Penitentiary, Hazelton - a federal prison in West Virginia's Preston County.

Bulger died the same day that he was transferred there from another prison.

The lawsuit said the prison system failed to protect Bulger by moving him to Hazelton, a prison with constant inmate violence.

The family also alleges the prison system was aware that Bulger was labeled a 'snitch' and that he was perhaps the most well-known inmate to be incarcerated since Al Capone, but yet did not do enough to shield him from the other inmates.

CHELSEA, Mass. —

Hundreds of pages from the FBI file on notorious Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger were recently made public by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They shed new light on what the agency knew prior to recruiting him as an informant.

Three hundred pages were added this month to the agency’s Vault public records database. Many are heavily redacted and some are faded to the point of being nearly unreadable.

The documents contain information about FBI investigations into loan-sharking and horse-fixing during the 1970s. They also reference investigative methods including monitored telephone conversations and individuals wearing recording devices.

WB was a murdering, criminal scum-bag, who killed (or was responsible for having killed) numerous innocent people over the years. It's fitting that he was himself killed in prison.

What goes around, comes around. Good riddance.

Agree. The law enforcement officials who knew of his crimes and still protected him can share some blame. JMO

Laws also have to be followed in our prison system. Its wrong for prison officials to create a situation they know will result in an inmate’s murder. Flouting the law creates chaos and lack of respect for our criminal justice system. JMO
