Missing woman disappears after road trip with boyfriend as mom reveals message to authorities

Gabby Petito, 22, set out on a road trip with her boyfriend in a converted camper van in early July to tour National Parks, but she disappeared in late August and her family hasn't heard from her in more than two weeks. Now, her mother is pleading for help finding her daughter.

Nicole Schmidt, Petito's mother, said that the last verbal conversation she had with her daughter was on Aug. 25.

"I don't know if she left Grand Teton or not," Schmidt said. "I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text. I didn't verbally speak to her."

The couple stopped in Grand Teton National Park on Aug. 25, Petito's last known location, before a planned trip to Yellowstone. They were traveling in a 2012 Ford white van that was converted into a camper.

A spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department said that an "attempt to locate" call was recently filed for Petito. The Suffolk County Police Department is also investigating the case. Suffolk County PD declined to comment on Sunday.

Petito is 5’5" and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She has a triangle tattoo with flowers on her left arm and a "Let it be" tattoo on her right arm.

There’s a legend that AT thru hikers don’t know who’s on the trail. However, you'd be surprised what they know. They might not know your background exactly, but they have well-developed hinky meters. Plus, they have nothing to do in the evening except fetch water, cook dinner (aka boil water), shoot the breeze, and go to bed. They talk about other hikers! And word gets around if something doesn’t add up.
And, right now the southbounders are in the south. Hinky meters very finely tuned.. and consider what the reward would mean to a batch of starving thru hikers.
Added to which… IMO BL is clueless about backcountry pursuits except in his dreams. And he sneers at people. That won’t work for him.
Regarding gear to take on a many-night trip, I don’t have time to write it right this minute. But it’s Winter. When I hiked the AT , I re-supplied every 4 days. I mailed the supplies to myself. Others bought them as they went along.
BL would have to have some way to re-supply, or have access to a food cache, plus first aid stuff, replacement batteries, fuel, meds…
Usually you calculate 2 lbs or so of food per day. No cans. It’s usually Ramen, Snickers bars, no vedge, little meat, maybe a foil packet of tuna… Mine was 32 different dinner menus which made me smirk every dinner, while everyone else was getting fed up with a nightly brew of ramen.
Also, you have to consider you have to find a trash can somewhere, which can develop into a significant amount. You wouldn’t want to bury it anywhere near your camp.

How is strangulation not premeditated? Premeditation only has to be a few seconds. It takes minutes to strangle someone.

To me it can be more of a reaction and not premeditated. A couple of examples are:

• I knock over a glass. I don't think.. I need to grab that before it hits the floor and breaks... my arm immediately flings out and tries to grab the glass before it hits the ground. Reaction, no thinking "I need to do that"
• Something flies out the air in my direction (thrown, falling, etc.). I don't take even a split second to think about it, I react and my arm flings up to reflect whatever the object is.

With that said, I think he was angered and reacted. I don't believe he thought a few second before.. "I'm going to strangle you..." and then did that... I believe his anger caused him to react, without thinking about his action, and he strangled her.

Sure, you can argue about how long it takes to kill someone by strangulation... but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about his initial response to whatever it is that triggered his action. And as for how long it takes... I'm in TOTAL agreement that he not only should have, be he COULD have stopped what he was doing without hanging on for up to 5 minutes. I'm not totally convinced that's premeditation either... maybe more caught up in the moment and unable to control his urges? I actually think "unable to control their urges" is the most plausible reason. If people could control their urges more, some people wouldn't do some of the horrific things they do.

I actually meant that I thought he hiked to Colter instead of packing up and fleeing in the van right away after the murder... but you raise a good point. If the hike took even as long as eight hours, he would still get there no later than 4:00 if he left at 8:00 AM. That would have given a couple hours to shop for supplies at the general store, shower, get some cash from the ATM before flagging down the first ride at 6:09 PM.

I should clarify, all speculation. The times, the hike, everything.

Or, hike til its too dark, and sleep with his crummy tarp the hike the rest of the way to CBV. OOps, what did he do all of 28th? jmo

To sleep under. I sleep under a tarp. However, you also have to have a ground cloth. And the tarp over you would have to be very lightweight. It has to be huge (much bigger than you’d think), since you can’t sleep near the edges (rain goes in sideways), and you have to have gables unless you want water to pool deeply over your head. No thanks. Imagine having to schlepp a huge blue tarp!
I’ve slept under my tarp in blizzards, illegally among crawdads on a bank of the Potomac, many strange places.
It’s spooky if you’re not used to it. You’re at eye level with bugs on the ground, chipmunks run right through it..
Then, there’s a certain amount of improvising when you set it up. You need trees, or trekking poles…
IMO BL read about this on some website or other. He told his ride from Colter Bay he had a tarp, because he was bragging.

Yes, this ^^ I've often thought that about Robert Chambers' trial. That flimsy story that Jennifer Levin hurt him and he somehow strangled her by grabbing her and throwing her off of him would never have been accepted by a jury if the prosecution said "this is how long it takes to strangle someone" and stood there in silence for five minutes.

Imagine sending your daughter money for her to remain safe and happy and then know her murderer is using her card while she lays dead in a field.

He is pathogen in human form.

It's really too painful to contemplate. He dumped her like a piece of garbage and fled with her valuables.

One thing I'm sure of, though. No jury is going to buy any excuse that she dumped him for some other dude and gladly handed over to him her van and credit cards.

Should this ever come to trial, of course, and I pray that it does.

I agree. I think when you add all the circumstantial evidence, it will be enough to convict him.

Agreed -- if he is found & found alive. There are many, many guesses by us and many others as to where he might be -- all we can do is hope that the FBI and those working with them can zero-down on it and drag this bad guy into jail and have very, very solid evidence to convict him beyond all doubt. For life.
I do wonder what Ma & Pa Laundrie are thinking. And I wonder if BL, if he is alive, has heard today's news.
