This is probably a long shot, but after reviewing things, I wanted to know if others have opinions???
The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)
This unidentified remains were found in Missoula County, Montana only a year after Sharon went missing, 12 hours from her original location, remains were described as : The victim's estimated date of death was approximately one year prior;
They describe her as of Asian decent, but I'm not confident that they would be able to distinguish between Native American and Asian on a year old postmortem body
Height and weigh is within 3 inches and 10lbs, but again unidentified is an estimated approximation. Predicted age is slightly off, but I really would like feedback from others.
Thanks

While it does seem possible, I’ve hoped that Long didn’t murder Sharon but rather left her on a bus or something, meaning that she would still be alive. Either way I hope she’s found soon

Don't believe that is Sharon. A big rule out would be the dental work the Montana lady had done. It was implants that were commonly found in Japan. Seeing that even today how crappy the IHS services are here in South Dakota (they will pull teeth rather than fill them), there is no possible way that she would've gotten that extensive and expensive dental work back in the 80's.
I have a feeling that Montana is going to be a tourist or a student/seasonal worker here on a visa. This area gets a lot of Asian tourists and it's also dependent on foreign workers during the summer. My guess is her family probably thought she decided to overstay her visa and that's why she never came back home. If not, another possibility would be she married someone in the military possibly stationed in Japan who later got orders or retired to the area.

Good information, didn't know about the dental work Montana had, Thank you for the input on this hunch, and It sounds like the idea of Sharon and Montanan being a match put to rest now.

For the past 35 years, Taylor Baldeagle has received letters and phone calls from strangers giving him tips and false hope about his daughter Sharon, who went missing in 1984 at the age of 12.

That false hope went public and viral in January after a Wyoming website and podcast, plus a South Dakota newspaper, said human remains found in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, might be Sharon.

As the stories began spreading on social media, Taylor — an 84-year-old from Eagle Butte who doesn't use the internet — suddenly began receiving phone calls from friends and family members telling him about the news, asking if it was true and sharing their condolences.

"I heard they found my sister," Taylor remembers his son telling him on the phone.

But law enforcement never contacted Taylor and the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office soon released a statement saying the bones are unlikely to belong to Sharon.

From Namus:Sharon and a friend were hitchhiking near Casper, WY when they were picked up by Royal Russell Long and taken to his home in Evansville, WY. Long tied the girls up at gunpoint. The friend was able to escape and went for help, but by the time police arrived, Long and Sharon were gone. Long was later arrested in Albuquerque, NM. Sharon wasn’t with him and denied knowing her whereabouts. Long pleaded guilty to kidnapping and was sentenced to two life terms in prison. He died in prison in 1993.

So we know Sharon was in Evansville WY and later Long was located in Albuquerque, NM, some 721 miles away. Assuming the worst - that he killed Sharon and disposed of her body somewhere enroute - there are two main possibilities. One is I-25S taking him through Denver CO and via Cheyenne where Long claimed he left Sharon (alive). The longer route 769mil takes a number of major but secondary roads. Along either route there are plenty of opportunities to branch out in to parks/wilderness areas. One wouldn't think a major detour would be required in order to dump poor Sharon.

Her Namus was updated pretty recently, it would be good to know which UID she has been submitted/compared to.

Thinking of you Sharon.

When I opened the link to the Jane Doe, I thought it was Sharon’s page!! There’s a decent sized discrepancy in age with this one, but the recons look almost identical to Sharon! In my opinion. The closest I’ve seen thus far!
ETA: Not sure what to make of this, or how it could apply to Sharon...o_O

Details of Disappearance

Sharon ran away from her hometown of Eagle Butte, South Dakota on September 18, 1984, along with a fifteen-year-old friend named Sandi. The girls were hitchhiking together in Casper, Wyoming when they were picked up by a truck driver named Royal Russell Long. A photo of him is posted with this case summary.

Long took the two girls to his home in Evansville, Wyoming and fed them. Sandi stated he then offered them $100 for sexual services. When the girls refused, he tied them up at gunpoint, beat Sharon and raped Sandi. Sandi escaped and went for help, but by the time police arrived at the residence, Long and Sharon were gone.

A week later, Long was apprehended Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sharon wasn't with him and he said he did not know her whereabouts. When asked for his side of the story, Long said Sharon and Sandi had told them they were eighteen and nineteen, and that Sandi agreed to have sex with him for $100.

After the sex act took place, Sandi demanded $200 from him and threatened to accuse him of rape if he did not comply, and she and Sharon told him they were actually only fifteen and twelve years old. Long said there was a struggle, although he did not hit the girls, and his nose was bloodied. He threatened them with a pistol and tied them up.

He then took a nap, and when he woke up he discovered Sandi had escaped. He carried Sharon out to his truck and drove her to Cheyenne, then put her on a light-colored truck bound for Dallas, Texas and this was the last time he ever saw her. He said he didn't realize he was wanted for kidnapping and rape until he went back to Casper.

According to Long, after realizing the police were looking for him, he drove to Amarillo, Texas, trying to find Sharon or anyone who might have seen her. Authorities were unable to find anything to support his story; they couldn't identify the truck driver Sharon supposedly got a ride to Dallas with, or find anyone who had seen this trucker or his truck.

Prosecutors considered charging Long with Sharon's murder, but they decided against it, and Sharon's father stated he believed his daughter was alive. Long pleaded guilty to two counts of kidnapping for the purpose of committing indecent liberties with a minor, and was sentenced to two life terms in prison.

Long is also a possible suspect in the disappearances of Deborah Meyer and Carlene Brown, who vanished from Wyoming in 1974, and he is the prime suspect in the disappearances of Cinda Pallett and Charlotte Kinsey, who vanished from the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on September 26, 1981.

He was charged with kidnapping and murdering Cinda and Charlotte after his 1985 arrest, but the charges were dismissed for lack of evidence. He died of a heart attack in prison in 1993. Sharon's father went to visit him shortly before his death, but Long refused to speak to him.

Sharon is the oldest of four siblings and had just begun her first year Brainerd Indian School in Hot Springs, South Dakota when she disappeared. Her father is still alive and searched for her all over the country after her disappearance, traveling as far as Arizona.

There were possible sightings of her in Wisconsin and Colorado in the years following her disappearance. She has never been found and foul play is suspected in her case.
