Sorry if this link was already posted, but the former cop interviewed here also says the same thing being likely (that all 3 were killed to keep the perps identity unknown, even if the issue was only with 1 of them, indicating that all 3 knew the perp ahead of time)...

Just found this article that indicates at the bottom that they may have to use DNA and dental records, so it's possible they did find teeth, not sure why that wouldn't make the process go faster though, like in the mcstay case...
