I think if it Burke was involved, it would have been handled very differently: He would have been squirreled out of town to a relative, vacation cancelled, and that novel of a ransom note wouldn't have been found until maybe a couple days later.

I don't think that her life was in danger because she wrote the letter. I think she wrote the letter because she knew her life was in danger. RSW knew the poop was about to hit the fan, and in some effort to save himself, reported it. Maybe he even thought if he reported only specific things...
