Agreed. At least in IL, although I can't imagine that changes by state, cases become inactive or "cold," but they are never closed unless they are definitively solved.

There is a huge difference between contacting someone and contacting LE. If LE or the family had a verified contact I agree that he would be removed as a missing person. If some friend came forward and said he contacted me and they couldn't verify it they would treat it like a tip.

He could have contacted someone other than law enforcement and it hasn't been verified. I don't know that I necessarily believe that, but it is possible. It is also possible that the people who have said they knew he went missing voluntarily are being given some consideration. Not necessarily...

I know. We have both a drug court and a mental health court where I work. We have so many dual diagnosis individuals that we struggle often with where to place them. And treatment can be incredibly difficult.

I guess I just find it less offensive to say drugs are likely involved- not necessarily that he is a dealer- than it is to say he is mentally ill or dead. And I don't think there is a prohibition against that, is there? It is, in my opinion, the most viable theory there is. I occasionally...

I respectfully disagree. You don't have to be deep in the drug underworld for this to involve drugs. I have 12 years of drug prosecution experience and I firmly believe drugs are involved. But I can be wrong. If we knew where he was we would find him. I don't believe the fugue state is...

I have always wondered about the search of the car as well. Since the parents own it, they could totally consent to its search, but it wouldn't include a search if him, only his car. His mom seems very protective of him, though, which wouldn't seem consistent with her wanting to get him in...

Ah, you are right- I was thinking of LE running it. Legally we couldn't do it without a subpoena or a warrant, but his mom could totally run it.

From what I know of the Maura Murray case, this one is very similar.

I can't think of any reason why the FBI would take on this case. There are no federal issues that cross my mind. I have had luck in getting their assistance in the past but it usually requires evidence that multiple states and foul play are involved or a federal statute. In my experience, anyway.

It really all depends on what you ask the PI to do and who the PI is. The ones I have dealt with are usually retired LE and very competent, but there are other people out there who are not LE. It also depends on the facts of the case. In my case I expect the credit check to show nothing as I...

Yeah, we certainly have the ability to get bank records and see if someone's account has been used. I remember hearing they did that in the McStay case too. I also assumed his debit card was linked to an account his parents could access and they have been able to check that- I think I read...

What program is this? I have been in LE for twelve years and am unfamiliar with any such program. We may be behind the times but we do all this stuff through old fashioned subpoenas and search warrants still. I will vouch for the fact that it is impossible to predict what any specific agency...

Kim, I know everyone else has thanked you for your posts, but I also want to let you know that I think you are an incredible young woman who is dealing phenomenally well with this situation. My condolences on your mom as well. This is so much to go through. Have you had much contact with his...
