As a mom, now grandma there is no way opposite sexes are sharing a room once they hit 10- 12 years old. Even bio siblings. I grew up with a brother and had a son and daughters. Never slept in the same room. It's just not a good idea to me. Hormones , false accusations....better to keep them...

I think more are wandering away. Parents are busier, preoccupied and sometimes overwhelmed. Not blaming them, some kids with autism are runners, elopers and they are fast. You turn around and they disappear
She had custody and left them with LS, who had to pay the babysitter. The grandmother should have been paying the babysitter when she wasn't available for the kids.
Maybe Grandma didn't want Maddie to stay another night. There was no reason that JS needed help when she was going to be off work for a few days. She could rest / sleep while Maddie was in school if needed.
