That clip shows me a mother in control not an over bearing mother. The child was sassy. She got pulled for it a chance to make it right and moved on.
That works for me.
To me being the parent of 8 kids as a single mom must be unbelievable. I am not going to give her crap for having tight reigns.
Ugh. The kid made a slightly smart-alecky comment. She didn't curse, or argue, or tell her mom to shut up, or anything more than a slightly snotty comment disagreeing that her mom had fun things planned. Any parent who thinks this kind of overreaction is appropriate or great parenting must be exhausted, IMO.
As parents, it is important to pick your battles so you're not always "battling". IMO, this didn't merit tossing her out of the room and then taking away her phone. Learning not to sweat the small stuff and trying to employ some humor with kids, especially teens, goes a long way to making life easier and maintaining a warm, open relationship with your kids.
And she's not a single mom. She's a divorced one. Because she treated her husband horribly during any small clip I ever saw of the show.
Also, if this were one, random over reaction from a mother of a large brood, that's one thing. But anyone who has every seen even a fraction of the show knows that Kate has typically been a cold, bossy, cheerless, emasculating, domineering, nagging, and humorless wife and mother.
Finally, I'm sick of hearing that the difficulty of raising 8 kids or just teen girls merits rigid parenting. She chose to have so many kids. That was an active choice she made via the high risks of multiples from her fertility treatments. Her children didn't choose to be part of a herd and thus do not deserve a cattle dog for a mother.
