10-28-12 Los Angeles just had an EQ

Can't confirm yet, but we just shook. Not long, barely 5 seconds, cable just went out...not too much noise, enough of a rock to let me know it was a quake. No critters upset at all...just sop.

I'll try to get confirmation.

2.6, about 0.5 miles away from me at most. So that's why I felt it...it was virtually underneath me.

It's weird with eqs...if there isn't shaking (or much shaking) to feel, it's really hard to tell where and how big they are. If they're big enough, at or near the center you bounce (up down); if it's far, then it's more of a rocking/rolling motion (side to side). And then you have to add magnitude to it. It's so hard to tell where they're coming from, or how big.

But this one was quite small, thus the short time and the "light" feel.

What's a tad concerning is that it's right underneath me. Sigh. Oh well...I was going to go to the market today anyway...now I'll just get a few more items. LOL.

I'm watching the History channel and it is about the Mayan calendar and how it ends on Dec. 21, 2012. So according to them we will cease to exist on this day. They are saying all these storms and earthquakes are all predicted in the calendar. Only time will tell. So better get your gift shopping in early.

Yeah... I am still trying to figure out what outfit to wear on the End Day... 12-21-12! :D

Thanks for the EQ alert, HC....

I am in SoCal, too.... But didn't feel anything...

noClue, a 2.6 is smalllllll...I don't feel them usually. This one, well, it was pretty much under me, so yeah, I felt it. But if I'd been asleep, I wouldn't have...or even walking. I was sitting down on the sofa, watching the am news...3-5 seconds, enough time to get the dogs to raise their heads, and for me to look around and watch them (for me, they're my best indicators if I need to move), and then it was over. Not even really a lot of sound.

But I'm barely a mile away from the epicenter...so yeah, this one I'd feel. If I was 5 miles away or more, I'd probably not have felt it.

As for 12/21/12, wear something really comfortable. You may have to do some running or something. LOL.

Yes... I figured you must have been right on top of the epicenter to feel a 2.6 EQ...

good idea for outfit for 12-21-12.... And I'll dress in layers to be prepared for both hail, fire, and brimstones! :D

I think that's History channel hype. My wall calendar ends with January, 2013. That doesn't mean the makers of the calendar thought the world would end then; that's just when they stopped printing pages.

My understanding from calmer archeologists is that the end of the Mayan calendar means nothing except that's the place they stopped carving the stone.

I agree with HC that sometimes it's hard to decide whether a tremor is a major event or not.

We use the cable and power at our house. If they go out, we turn on the transistor radio. Otherwise, we just go on about our business.

There are many, many calm scientists from many walks of life that think something is going on...after all, it's not "just" the Mayan calendar "stopping", it's when it stops, and why...along with the galactic alignment and magnetic pole shift potential, it brings some interesting things to the table.

I think it's wise to not dismiss it right off as "just a calendar ending" and research a bit (from reputable sources, frankly); at the very least, understanding when it ends, and it's significance, is appropriate...after all, how did the Mayans know this date was the date of galactic alignment??

There is a lot of BS floating around, but, like a lot of wild things, there is some truth buried there. As I said, it's wise to understand the full picture, rather than just dismissing things out of hand.

And, I still think dressing for the occasion is a good idea. Layers, my friend...layers. ;)

BTW, I forgot to add...my cable came back almost immediately. LOL. Power didn't go out, just the box clicked off...then clicked back on. All was well...it *was* only a 2.6, after all. No biggie...and like I said, I wouldn't have even felt it if I wasn't pretty much right on top of it. And, I, too have transistor radios. Makes good sense, living in EQ country...

a lot of stores are going to be upset if the world does end 12/21/12, just think of all the sales they're going to miss out on that are usually the day before Christmas!

a. I wasn't questioning whether there are "things going on". In fact there always are, even on Uranus, which despite the cold has the highest winds in the solar system. It is the nature of the universe to be dynamic rather than static. There is even "solar wind" in the spaces we used to think were empty.

b. Whether the "things going on" this year are particularly memorable will probably be up to us ("us" meaning human beings), since we seem to be the only species that keeps track of history.

c. Do we know why the Mayans stopped their calendar where they did? If so, I haven't heard a reputable archeologist say.

d. If the Mayans were such good prognosticators, how come they missed (i) the drought or whatever it was that wiped out their civilization, and (ii) the arrival of the Europeans with diseases that wiped out 90% of their population?

HC, I do realize the poles have been moving (it's possible they always do; we know they have done so in the past) and we seem to be having a lot of earthquakes around the Ring of Fire (our records don't go back far enough to tell us whether this is unusual). But how are we to know whether this has anything to do with December 12?
