CNN Transcript: Martin Savidge talking about Prosecutor and Protest

PHILLIPS: Anything happening behind you? Are the protests kind of getting word of what's just been announced and they are responding and, then, number two, tell me where we go from here?

SAVIDGE: Well, the first, they are just hearing it out of my lips, because no one else has been reporting this. So this is their first indication. They still have a number of members of this group that's protesting here that are blocking the doors, the entrance to the police department here. As a result, it appears that they are gathering around and giving some sort of statement. At the same time, though, the Sanford Police Department has stayed away. They have not tried to interfere. There has been no altercation, no confrontation. Instead, it appears they are going out of their way not to arrest anybody. They closed off the street in front of the police department here. There are also members from the department of justice, community services team, that are monitoring the circumstances as well. It has been very peaceful. People have been speaking, singing and praying and no arrests --

They gave the addresses where the 911 calls were coming from. GZ never did give an address. jmo

I know GZ didn't give an address - my fingers were getting ahead of my thoughts. The ambulance video is what I was referring to - when TM's body had been found. The dispatch was given 2 different addresses by police dispatch.... they were talking about whether or not to approach, etc. I would hope they were dispatching them to where the actual body was.

That's just crazy, IMO. I've never heard of a police department closing down for any reason.

ITA. I have not heard that ever. I have heard of this happening in schools and publicly held offices. In those cases they've reopened with all new staff. Hmmmmmm.

Hey, ya'll ~ I'm trying to keep the Media thread updated today and there's a lot of breaking news.

It would really help if you could give a link when you quote something because otherwise I have to put the quote into google and try to backtrack to the article.

For Newbies: If you are on a website and want to post a link, go up to the browser address box, highlight the whole thing, right-click, choose Copy, come here to Websleuths and open a text box on the forum, right-click and paste.

If that doesn't work for you, just write the name of the source so we can find it. Thanks in advance! :)
I put up the 911 Calls yesterday as well, in case anyone needs them for reference.

Thanks thoughtfox for going through the trouble, half the time I forget about the media thread.

Really? I just read that article again (twice), must be a case of them changing the story after your post (seems strange though since the story has been online since 4/3/12) and no where in the story you posted (http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/03/us-usa-florida-shooting-trayvon-idUSBRE8320UK20120403) does it say anything about him going to bed at 10 or that he turned his phone off. What it does say is "He went to bed figuring the teen must have gone to the movies and turned off his phone. " "the teen must have gone to the movies and turned off his phone" meaning that Trayvon must have turned his phone off when Trayvon went to the movies, just as I originally stated in my post.

jmo, imo and all that jazz.

As are many of our perceptions due to media outrage, and misinformation.

I find it ironic that some of the same people say that by looking at GZ history the know this or that.
But that looking at Trayvon history has nothing to do with this case.
SORRY
Can’t have it both ways.
I agree, I don't think it is out of realm to think that he could have looked suspicious, as in casing houses. None of us know.

Why is it so hard to believe he would "hide" or look suspicious when there is proof he's looked suspicious in the past and was actually up to something. :banghead:

"In October, a school police investigator said he saw Trayvon on the school surveillance camera in an unauthorized area "hiding and being suspicious." Then he said he saw Trayvon mark up a door with "W.T.F"Link

Homeowner association could be sued in Martin case

April 9, 2012 3:11 AM

SANFORD, Fla. — If Trayvon Martin's family sues over his death, they might not target George Zimmerman but instead the homeowners association of the neighborhood where the shooting happened and Zimmerman lived.

That's because if Zimmerman's claim that he shot the unarmed 17-year-old in self-defense is upheld by prosecutors, a judge or a jury, Florida's so-called stand your ground law would protect him from a lawsuit. But his clearance or acquittal wouldn't stop Martin's parents from suing The Retreat at Twin Lakes homeowners association — and its insurance policies and assets would make it a much more lucrative target than Zimmerman, even if he is eventually convicted of a crime.

Plus, lawyers say, Exhibit A would be a newsletter sent by the association to residents in February, the same month as the shooting. It said Zimmerman was the go-to person for residents who had been the victims of a crime.

WSers figured this out eons ago, perhaps the Associated Press should be checking here to stay on top of things. :giggle:
what would they get out of suing GZ?

Some of us think it's crucial to look at TM's background to try to understand if it's likely he was actually doing something that looked suspicious, and if it's likely he threw the first punch.

I would be more comfortable with the girlfriend's account if she had spoken to LE right away, rather than much after her encounters with TM's lawyers. I would also be more comfortable with her account had she made some attempt - ANY attempt - to get help for Trayvon after hearing what would have certainly been a very upsetting encounter.
I know....was she used to him hanging up and not calling back? why wasn't she concerned? and why did it take so many days to go to the police?

We don't have to be comfortable with what she did because clearly she was under the care of a doctor when she related her story which the doctor would have documented. As long as the story is consistent the belief is she would be telling the truth. If she is telling the truth it will obviously match up with the investigation. That is why she received a subpoena, they believe her account of what happened is correct otherwise there would be no need to call her to testify. jmo
how many days later was it that she went to a dr or did she go that night?
I know a lot of people who have grills. All races. Men. Women. I've seen white women with diamonds drilled into their teeth? Platinum is the new popular thing though. Gold teeth are still very popular in Florida, but I've noticed that diamonds/platinum is the new thing other places?

I have lived in FL my entire life....never met anyone with a grill....have seen some gold teeth here and there.

Geez, Idk abt this but hubby just said u need a grand jury in capitol cases. I have to go out and can't look this up, but does that mean there won't be a capitol type charges in this case? I don't even know what are considered capitol charges and hubby had to go back to work.
Sorry just wondering abt this and if hubby knows what he's talking about.

I never thought this was a Capitol case so it really doesn't matter about the GJ. I think the SA will file the appropriate charges, which I believe is at least Manslaughter.

Your hubby is right, they were just talking about this not too long ago on CNN. I wouldn't think it would be a capital charge anyway. If they overcharge we end up with P-12, IMO

what do you think the chages would be? so if it is capitol they have to have a grand jury?

Why have they shut down public access to police department for what is so far a peaceful protest??!

Reminds me of businesses that suddenly shut down and are "Opened under new management"

I agree LolaMoon. Or perhaps even felony manslaughter since Trayvon was a minor. I am skeptical about any felony charges tho because of 'that trial last summer in FL'.

IF George were arrested today... would he be taken to the Sanford Police Department or would he be taken directly to the jail? Where is the jail in Sanford?

ETA: I just don't think they would close down the entire public entrance to a PD for a little protest?

From article: Trayvon Martin Case Spotlights Florida Town's History Of 'Sloppy' Police Work

Martin’s killing has sparked national outrage. But it is not the first criminal investigation to upset Sanford’s black community, whose leaders say police have repeatedly failed to properly investigate crimes involving black victims. A string of recent scandals involving department personnel has added to community anger. In the past three years, officers have been caught demanding bribes from motorists, fabricating evidence and drawing weapons unlawfully.

Wow. Police were caught fabricating evidence, like maybe adding untrue statements & info on a police report after the fact? jmo. And caught drawing weapons unlawfully, no wonder they decided Zimmerman didn’t do anything wrong?! JMO

And demanding bribes from motorists??

BBM...Not too terribly surprised... I was born and for the most part raised in New Orleans until we moved to another city when I was 13..

True Story.. Many of the guys in the old neighborhood went into what we referred to as the "THREE P PROFESSION".. They either joined the priesthood, joined the police force, or went to the pen..
Many years later we came to realize some of those that chose the priesthood and some who joined the police force shouldn't have even bothered.. They should have just gone straight to the pen......JMHO..

Just think, if GZ goes free, he could be in any of our neighborhoods as captain of NW, packing heat! That's a real comforting feeling, huh?
Since I'm the NW for my block, I wouldn't allow him!!!

how could it be anything but a felony? i don't understand...the charge will most likely be manslaughter.

I understand how one would think the deed owners might be sued, but they do not own the common grounds, they pay dues to the HOA in order to utilize the common grounds and they pay the HOA dues to maintain them. The homeowners in the community may, and likely will, bring suit against the HOA.

To get a better understanding of why the condo owners do not own common areas - when they sell their home, they are only selling the dwelling structure - nothing else - not the parking lots, the pool, the courtyards - just the dwelling.

Then why was I accessed extra dues when they paved the streets in my condo complex? Why was I accessed extra dues when the last hurricane to hit my area ripped up the palm trees and they had to be replaced? My written HOA states that all owners are responsible for all common grounds, and as an owner therefore a member of the HOA equal owner of all common ground.

jmo, imo and all that jazz

I would also like to add... if it comes out that anyone in the SPD or SA office are in on some kind of cover-up... I want them charged with Accessory After the Fact, Obstruction, and possibly even Tampering with Evidence (I want to know how the gun was handled!). I am not saying that they did anything like this... but if they did... they should be charged for their criminal behavior the same way any of us regular citizens would be charged if we did anything like that.

I just left this area a few days ago. Visiting my mom in Palm Bay, which is not far from Sandford. Its interesting how this story hits older folk. My parents were raised in south, during a time when if you saw a car approaching ( especially at night) or heard one coming from behind, you had to duck into the field, for fear of what they would do to you if they saw you. Yes, they would aim their cars at you.

But upon further listening to their stories, it makes sense to me why this case means so much to them. Sure you won't see them in the protesting lines. You won't see them posting here, or calling to the local radio stations, but these folks are paying attention to this case. Because they remember... they remember the times when folks of color would "disappear" and no action would be done to those thought responsible. You could be dragged out of your house, and beat / killed, and you'd never see justice.

So i just figured, i'd give a view point on how another demographic, this time age, is viewing this case.

I read she went to the hospital the day of the wake, but I don't know when that was - I would assume after the body was given back to the family?

I've seen (rarely), gold teeth too, just not "grills" on white girls.
