I wonder how much rent in that complex costs? Maybe I'll make a call in the morning to see how much they rent for? I'm just curious on how much it actually cost to live in that neighborhood? George's wife didn't work, so he would have had to have carried the financial burden. He was also going to school, and that costs money (he may have financial aid?).

I just wonder how he was able to afford to live there, but I am also questioning whether or not this was one of the complexes that started out as apartments, then switched to condo's, and after the housing crisis, it went back to apartments? The cost of living in those places is not that much, so did George even have a reason to feel entitled to this "Gated Community Mentality" that I guess exists?

MOO

Here's a larger one for ~$1000/mo. I'm sure the rents have gone down significantly with the market downturn and with all the hoopla around this case, as well.

I live in an area that has been very hard hit by the economy and the homes for sale are currently listed for about 1/2 of what they sold for at the peak of the market in 2006 or so when I believe the Retreat was built.

Some units on the real estate page sold for as low as 82K.

My folks sold their house and got out of San Antonio just before the housing bust. Their fancy gated community is now across the street from a YMCA, an apartment complex on one side and a convenience store on the other. They feel like they got out just in time. And of course, locks only keep honest people out, not those looking for trouble.

How does this headline that a casual reader may see be considered "pro-GZ?"

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57420076/zimmermans-not-guilty-plea-flew-under-the-radar/

His not guilty plea flying under the radar, according to the headline, I took as pro GZ because it indicates the outraged public that existed before he was charged having lost interest and intensity if his not guilty plea flew under the radar/went unnoticed. That was how it struck me.

It took six weeks and intense pressure for him to get charged. Fast forward to not a lot later in the timeline and his guilty plea is under the radar, he is out on bail, and police chief who tried to resign was told no. Just seems like a shift to me. One that surprises me this quickly, but probably shouldn't, we discuss case after case with tons of easily accessed information that when we talk to people "in the real world" versus fellow posters have NO CLUE what is going on with them. Or more than having no clue have a totally warped view based on two percent of the deal data points.

Just an observation though, of headlines, on one website.

Is this because of the liability of the HOA since they endorsed calling him as "Captain" and he was conducting his own armed patrols??? Can they be sued in Civil Court for wrongful death for allowing him/ negligence of not knowing he was doing this???

I'm sure the owners who sent out the notice telling people to contact GZ... are shakin' in their flip flops.

Insanity! It's probably been close to 8 years since I almost bought that condo and they still haven't finished building the complex. The building across from where I would have lived is still just an empty shell. When the housing crisis struck, they just stopped building.

So yeah, he lives in a glorified gated community. I do too so it isn't a jab on George, but there is absolutely nothing special about it! Trust me! It's not even really gated as anyone can just walk in. It only keeps cars from coming in, even though half the time, the gate stays open so long, it can let three cars in back to back. They are really not that great.

Why isn't the blood smeared in that pic. Trayvon's hands should have been covered in blood, and we should see smudges/fingerprints/palmprints somewhere...:waitasec:

And I'd also like to know if it was a Target that even carried groceries. My local Target (a regular one) didn't carry groceries until a few months ago. Now the Target Greatland is a different story...

When we moved here, there was one Walmart and one Target. Neither sold groceries. A few years ago, Walmart built a 24 hour super store and it sells groceries. I think it mostly depends on the size of the community.

“I watched it like most people, I saw some of the comments made by a lot of people including President Obama,” O’Mara replied. “My opinion doesn’t matter, but I didn’t feel hatred at all.” That said, he added that George Zimmerman, Sr.’s had a deep wound about the situation his son was in, and “anything can be reinterpreted or misinterpreted through a parents’ eyes… they are the parents involved, they are entitled to their emotions.”

I was looking for something else and stumbled across this quote which I missed when it was given. By far the dumbest thing I have heard under the new defense. Maybe it sounded better on tv than it reads in print.

That's not bad at all! That's actually really tempting, but I will never, ever live in Sanford!

OT: I just had to walk outside really quick and it's flippin' freezing outside!! I've never known it to be this cold this time of year! Jeebus!

I don't even remember what regular WalMarts, Targets, or even KMarts look like? Everything is a Super Store here. I do like having a Pizza Hut in Target though? I think they've gone a little overboard with the Starbucks in Target here as there is a Starbucks in the same exact plaza?

Years ago, when we were living in Austin, during one of the boom times, developers were tripping over themselves to build gated communities of houses/townhouses/apartments out on Lake Travis. Most of them barely got started before a bust hit and not a single one of those places got finished. They sat there for years, decaying and burning down cuz no one could afford them, even if they'd been finished.

Gated communities were a big come-on for developers to lure folks with a false sense of security.

Thanks Adrienne. I just measured a Mini-Maglite that I keep in the center consul of my truck and it's 6" long. I keep it there just in case. Is a Mini-Maglite considered a "tactical" flashlight? I wonder if that's the kind of flashlight GZ used that night?

LOL! I have several of those too.

I keep seeing this "tactical" flashlight discussed and wondered what the big deal was so I went to walmart's website and queried "tactical flashlight" . A total of 93 came up, they look like an ordinary small flashlight to me and prices start at under $9 dollars.

So I am not sure why the investigator chose to include the word "tactical" unless he was just trying to make it sound more menacing.

With respect to why he thought TM was suspicious, chose to follow him, got out of his vehicle, etc., all of the above is irrelevant. The point is that it's a gated community, and so there is gated community mentality.

I live in the #1 most effected county in the United States of America when it comes to the housing crisis, and it effected more than just houses here. We have so many empty, half-finished, not-even-half finished strip malls everywhere. All these developers came in and built the crap out of my area and then BOOM!

I was very lucky that the place I was working at, the lawyer for the club told me to bring in my paperwork so he could look it over (for free) and he talked me out of it. Thank God! I would be in the same position as so many people are in right now. Scary to think about.

The reason I moved out of my first gated community was because they were turning the apartments into condos and you had to buy them to stay in there. I wasn't going to buy that piece of crap, but a lot of people did. They are back to apartments now.

There are plenty of reasons for why there is no blood smeared in that pic and why TM's hands weren't covered in blood (if that's even true).

What are you suggesting? That GZ had the presence of mind to come up with the idea of staging a back-of-the-head injury in order to claim self defense? Again, I see him being given too much credit for intelligence.

This is my tacticle dog walking flashlight.
I didn't know it would make me seem like a vigilante.
Hubby bought it. It is really light in weight and super bright (which is great when looking for my black dog on the beach at night).
Hubby is an engineer and a gadget nut. In and of itself I would not give the tactical flashlight a lot of weight, but that is just me.

I do not agree there is a gated community mentality, so here we are.

With all due respect, I have no idea what "gated community mentality" is? I live in a gated community? And we do not have this "mentality" that you speak of, nor do we feel that we are entitled to have that kind of mentality just because we live in a gated community?

My complex is 10 times nicer than the complex George lives in (not to sound mean, but it's true) and I would never look at someone like they didn't belong here just because they were walking down the street? A lot of people do not live in here that like to walk, jog, run, etc...

I would love to know what kind of gated communities you have been to because I don't want to go anywhere near those places.
