Mark Anthony Williams, known as Tony, gave up a college football scholarship to join the police academy. He was only 24 when he died of three gunshot wounds in 1989.

July 7, 1989 about midnight Tony was off duty and riding his motorcycle down Interstate 40 in Knoxville, Tennessee. This section of town is not where you want to be after dark. He was shot three times in the back. A fourth bullet hit the seat. He immediately took the nearest exit to get himself to the hospital. As he turned onto Cherry Street, he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed.

Around the same time as Tony was shot, Larry Wayne Witt, nicknamed Boot Nose, was shot in the leg, but survived. Witnesses had seen Buck Nose, Johnnie Edgar Warwick, and a woman talking beneath the interstate, possibly in the middle of a drug deal, right before Buck Nose and the police officer were shot. Buck Nose was taken to the hospital and survived.

A few days later Buck Nose and Johnnie were arrested. Buck Nose had a serious criminal history. Johnnie, who was found in possession of a pistol, told police Buck Nose had shot the cop. He told 3-4 different stories. Buck Nose denied shooting the cop. He said that he and Johnnie were riding down Interstate 40 when Buck Nose accidentally shot himself in the leg. The two men tried to get the bullet out of his leg with a clothes hanger. Then they decided going to a hospital was best.

Both men were charged with Tony's murder. Because ballistics testing didn't match the bullets from Johnnie's or Buck Nose's gun, the murder charges were dropped against both men. Buck Nose still had to stay in jail on unrelated charges: Cocaine and running a counterfeit operation.

What do the sleuths think really happened?

Theory #1: Tony heard the gunfire that allegedly was reported. He may have been trying to get to it when he was shot. If Buck Nose and Johnnie really were the trigger men, and were carry out a drug transaction, and all the sudden a cop comes upon them. They shoot the cop.

Theory #2 Do you believe Buck Nose when he said he wasn't the trigger man? Maybe Johnnie killed the cop.

Theory #3 Do you think Johnnie was the trigger man? The one who gave 3-4 different versions of what actually happened.

Theory 4: drive by shootings are a common problem in Knoxville, so I wouldn't automatically think those bullets came from Buck Nose or Johnnie. In fact, ballistics testing showed that the bullets that killed the cop didn't come from any of the guns owned by Johnnie or Buck Nose. The problem is, they could have disposed of those guns and gave police the other guns they owned.

If you have any information please call the Knoxville Police Dept.
