2009.03.25 - Motions Hearing

Wish I could! I'll pick a better seat next time.

Here are some observations from notes I took during the hearing:

Different courtroom, maybe because of the short notice?
Baez & Garcia arrived at 10:15, I went in the courtroom then and Casey was already in there at 10:20.

Took a seat, then George & Cindy came in a couple minutes later and sat right by me. Uggg, that means I'll be in the zooms on them....

KC did NOT look at her parents AT ALL during the hearing, she did give them an extremely brief glance when leaving, wasn't really smiling or anything tho. I actually thought she looked kind of upset when leaving.

Cindy chewed gum throughout the hearing (Courtroom decorum rules, posted right outside the courtroom, say NO GUM. #15). She also texted a bunch, and her and George held hands quite a bit.

Near the beginning, Judge Strickland says to the SA "How do you know they're not working for free?" and Cindy says - loud enough for those around her to hear - "That's right!"
I resisted the temptation to tell her that as an Orange County taxpayer, we DO NOT want to pay for a second trial because of something like this, and it DOES need to be determined by the judge.

On the way back in from the in camera meeting, KC looked almost ready to cry. Did not look at her parents (or anybody in the seats). You could hear her chains clinking throughout the courtroom. heh

REALLY wish I would have been closer at the end to hear what it was that Baez said to Ashton that made him erupt. Very unprofessional conduct on Baez's part, in my opinion. He has broken the Courtroom Decorum Policy a number of times, a number of ways. I don't think he has even read it! I see at least 5 out of 16 that he has violated.

Afterwards, Baez met with George & Cindy for a few minutes out in the hallway, they had to move away from all the reporters that were crowding around.

I might have a couple comments over in the Parking Lot thread, for those of you interested.... :)

Thank you kindly, Muzikman. It is nice to hear first hand.

Baez was asked if he was surprised at the judges reaction at the end of the hearing and Baez asnwered," I don't think I should reply on his temper tantrums.."

  • #463
Musikman, did you see who Strickland was looking at/addressing when he said "this is getting old?" JB or Ashton?

  • #464
how do I get to the parking lot thread?

during the first bond hearing, she indicated that they owed a great deal on the house. How could they have paid it off? I believe they said they owed ~120k. i will find the link.

It's probably paid off now though.. imo

Was hard to tell, as I was sitting off to the right a little, but I think it was more in Baez's direction. He made a number of inappropriate comments during this hearing - as he usually does...

Bottom line it really doesn't matter to me how many lawyers are playing on the defense team because none of them are magicians and can make the single most damning piece of evidence against Casey Anthony disappear.

Sure ... they will try to muddy the waters ... use lots of smoke and mirrors ... put on a first class dog and pony show but at the end of the day it all comes back to the FACT that it was Cindy Anthony, not Casey, who called 911 on July 15, 2008 setting into the motion the disturbing revelation that the last time Caylee Anthony, age 2, was seen alive by anyone outside her immediate family was June 9, 2008 (later changed to June 15th after a time-stamped video of Caylee visiting her maternal great-grandfather at an assisted living facility surfaced extending the timeline an extra week.)

31 DAYS.

If I'm the prosecution, those are 2 words the jury will hear over and over, throughout the trial.

I also found it interesting that Diaz was convicted of killing a 2 year old...

I just don't understand why KC would hire JB. He has only tried on other case and he LOST?!?!? What is she thinking? I by no means am defending her or anything, I just don't understand why she would hire someone so inexperienced. I keep coming back to the thought that she is going to try to get a mistrial somehow because of him.

Exactly, and the prosecution should drive that point home by repeatedly playing the audio of KC even then begging CA for "one more day".

OMGosh! He said that about the Judge's comments? He referred to them as "his temper tantrums." Truly?

Am I allowed to say that ...imo....Baez is as classy as a dumpster?

Thanks for the "inside the courtroom report!" :) Cindy's (and George's) gum chewing has to be some sort of obsession. Our courtrooms here in California also forbid gum chewing, and I was in a courtroom once and saw a judge order a person chewing gum to leave the courtroom and get rid of the gum.

I didn't get to see the whole hearing, but the part I did see, I didn't see Casey acknowledge her parents.

Wow, you get a payraise for this report! Great sleuthing.

Not to mention the utter and complete lack of any phone calls to/from ZFG on Casey's cell phone or any other phone (e.g. Anthony land line, Cindy or George's work phones, etc.)

31 DAYS.

That's why the pros is doing what they are doing here. They seem to be thinking along the same lines as you and me and hundreds of others..

She was in jail and needed a lawyer.. was given his name. She had no way of knowing he lost his only case, ya know?

What am I missing, with JB and KC acting like they "won" this round? I think the SA is probably pretty pleased with this outcome, because it just removes or diminishes one of KC's basis for appeal (conflict of interest). I would imagine the SA is ecstatic that this issue has been somewhat settled, JB gets to stay on the case, and KC just has less case for an appeal later. Am I missing something?

You aren't missing anything. JB is missing it though. IMO just show's JB's inexperience in the courtroom. He just thinks he "won" a motion... finally. lol He hasn't realized yet that it only closes a door at the end of the trial for him and KC to wiggle through.
