Casey Anthony: Did she commit a cardinal sin with those jail notes?

<snip>

The Orange County Jail is launching an investigation into letters that Anthony wrote to fellow inmates. Court documents put the number of notes that Anthony wrote at 258 pages. WFTV’s Kathi Belich explained the investigation will focus on allegations “that a jail guard here helped Casey Anthony and another inmate exchange letters, which is not allowed.”

WESH-Channel 2’s Bob Kealing cited a source who had read the letters and said they contained “ramblings,” “references to food” and “very few references to Caylee.” Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

“She’s talking about her case, she’s committing a cardinal sin,” said Orlando attorney Richard Hornsby, who does legal analysis for WESH. “Don’t talk about your case to anybody in jail.”

<snip>

WFTV and WOFL-Channel 35 focused on the $275,000 that the Anthony defense team had spent before running out of cash.

Judge Stan Strickland today wanted an explanation of how defense attorney Jose Baez had spent money beyond the $112,500 they’ve accounted for, plus $10,000 to public-relations expert Marti Mackenzie.

WFTV’s Belich said: “Behind closed doors, he [Baez] apparently explained how he spent the other $152,500 dollars that was left. … We have not gotten any paper work about how Baez spent his money, but we’re trying to get it. Starting now, taxpayers will pay for Casey’s experts, investigators and other costs, which her new attorney Cheney Mason says could amount to $200,000.”

WOFL’s Holly Bristow said: “Attorney Jose Baez did have a big file with him. He had to show the judge where Casey’s money has been spent. .. This afternoon, Baez did have to bring facts and figures into the judge’s chambers. It was all done behind closed doors. I asked where the money has gone, but he wouldn’t answer any of my questions.”

Posted: 12:49 pm EDT March 19,2010
<snipped>
Casey Anthony celebrated her 24th birthday March 19 from behind bars, but she won't be buying herself any gifts.

Casey's jail account is empty; in fact, she owes 79 cents.

Casey’s parents have deposited $150 in her account this month, but she's already spent it all.

Casey's birthday dinner menu includes scalloped potatoes with turkey, peas, bread, fruit and a beverage.

Casey Anthony Declared Indigent

The ruling also said the court has made a thorough review of all item submitted including the cost ledger of Defense Counsel and is satisfied that the defendant has met all the statutory standards.

What Impact Will Photo Rights Purchase Have On Case?
ABC News paid $200,000 for exclusive Casey Anthony photo licensing rights, which is a move that's raising serious eyebrows.

“The story is about this one particular family,” said Tim Brown, a professor at the University of Central Florida’s Nicholson School of Journalism. “Eventually you're going to want to talk to that family. Who are they going to want to talk to? Anybody or the people that paid them $200,000 for the right to show the pictures.”

While no laws were broken by paying for pictures, Brown said viewers may now question the news organization's credibility.

“The real problem is they didn't say anything,” Brown said. “They weren't up front when they started airing these pictures that they paid an exorbitant amount of money to get the rights to it.

Apparently Anthony and the unnamed woman met at the Orange County Jail and that's when the letters were exchanged.

The notes may be used as evidence, but we're told they don't include any type of confession.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office obtained the notes and turned them over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is now investigating.

Jail investigates letters prosecutors say Casey Anthony wrote to another inmate
If Casey Anthony sent the letters, she would have violated jail policy, officials say

3:00 a.m. EDT, March 20, 2010
<snipped>
The Orange County Jail is investigating a report that Casey Anthony wrote 258 pages of notes and letters to another woman inmate, officials said Friday.

The information was uncovered through a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation and presented in court by prosecutors Thursday. If Anthony did send the notes, she would have violated jail policy, a spokesman said.

Anthony, 24, who is charged with first-degree murder in the 2008 death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, is in a cell by herself for her own protection and is not allowed to have direct contact with other inmates. That includes passing notes.

ABC News is facing sharp criticism over the disclosure that it paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to a Florida woman who now stands accused of killing her own daughter.

The $200,000 payment in August 2008 to Casey Anthony was used for exclusive rights to reproduce family photographs and videotape of her then-missing 2-year-old, Caylee.

State will help pay Casey Anthony's defense, judge orders
March 20, 2010 11:28 a.m. EDT
<snipped>
"All costs submitted shall be in compliance with the Ninth Judicial Circuit's caps and rates and are subject to further review," Circuit Court Judge Stan Strickland said in a order issued Friday.

In Friday's order, Strickland granted Anthony's request to be declared indigent, which means the state will pay expenses related to her defense on a discretionary basis except for private attorney's fees.

A spokeswoman for the DePaul Center for Justice in Capital Cases praised the ruling.

"The defense is pleased that this ruling came after an analysis of supplementary documents detailing the defense's income and expenditures, which were deemed by the court to meet the legal standards for the determination of indigency for costs," Liz Brown said.

"After consistent misinformation from legal analysts, bloggers, and commentators, the defense hopes this ruling ends inappropriate speculation regarding any misuse of funds and looks forward to Miss Anthony's day in court."
