2010.06.23 - Gates talks about tips

In my opinion it seems that LE is not looking as much into "sightings" of Kyron. IMO if they still truly believed it possible that Kyron had been "kidnapped" they would be taking every single sighting(and at the very least calling the local LE of where the sighting was called in from and having their local LE "check it out" and report back to LE in Oregon whether their was any validity to it). I know this process of using local LE to check out sightings in other areas of the country is used rather frequently(as we've seen in both Caylee Anthony and Haleigh Cummings cases). But just as was mentioned in this article about the sighting in Nevada according to the tipster it seemingly was NEVER investigated, nor even a follow up phone call to the tipster. To me this indicates the reason they are NOT FOLLOWING UP ON SIGHTINGS IS THAT unfortunately they probably have some sort of evidence which has led them to NO LONGER look at this avenue as a possibility for finding Kyron(I think we all know what I am trying to say WITHOUT having to say it[bcuz in my heart I still want to hold out hope no matter how small it might be]).. In my opinion LE is putting THEIR ALL(along with FBI and other resources)into bringing closure to this case for us all, but MOST IMPORTANTLY bring closure to Kyron's family that loves him and are going to spend every second of the rest of their lives dealing with the unbearable pain of this loss.

I pray they are looking into all tips.Nothing is a waste of time to find little Kyron.I will say No Comment in how I feel they are handling this investigation.I just pray the find him and do not stop looking for him.

They have said they are investigating all tips. When Gates says that some tips are a waste of time, that is not the same as saying he won't bother checking them out. Any given tip can only be determined to have been a waste of time after they've looked into it and found it to be a dead-end. Rationally, some of the tips are going to be just flat wrong. I can't blame the man for noting that some tips are a waste of time once he's got the benefit of hindsight.

Look at all the mean spirited comments made by trolls around the web, not just on this case, but on virtually anything out there with a comment thread after it. If some people get their kicks picking fights by making anonymous incendiary remarks on web pages, it only follows that some people might enjoy calling in deliberately false leads. It's an awful thought, but I certainly would have to agree with Captain Gates that a tip like that would be a waste of time. It sounds to me like he'd dutifully have it followed until it proved false, no matter what.

I don't have an opinion on the quality of LEs handling of this case at this time. It could be brilliant or moronic. I can't form an opinion until I know what they did! Right now we are all in the dark.

I feel no lead is worthless.ALL leads are important.

I agree. If the public believes their tip is worthless they likely won't call it in. It is not up to us to decide, and LE should be seeking tips - even if someone thinks a small detail is irrelevant- it should be called in.

"Worthless", imo, was a poor choice of a word. Many have been ruled out would have been better. Even if ruled out leads and certain info has not been made public.

In every case, there are going to be people who call in nonsense tips or far-fetched or impossible scenarios. The more attention a case receives, the more nuts will crawl out to make a call. They have probably even had some "confessions", which often happens as well, and often from people who are not in any position to have been involved in the case, perhaps in a hospital, disabled, or proved elsewhere, whatever. I did not take Gates' comments to say they were ignoring any tips, but I 100% believe that some tips are indeed a waste of time. And I also believe that just because someone does not get a call back it does not mean that a tip was not looked into.

"We have detectives going through each and every tip that goes in," Gates said. "Quite frankly, some of those tips are worthless, but it's a process of what are viable to follow up on and what aren't."

BBM. I understand that they will have tips that lead absolutely no where. There are some crazy people in this world that will make up stuff just to get a few minutes of fame or to inflict pain, which I could never understand!

However, that statement could be very damaging to the case since it was said by Gates. They have asked the public to call in all tips no matter how small they may seem. Then, to release such a comment may very well lead someone that might have that small piece to finish the puzzle not to call it in because they don't want to add to the "worthless tips" JMHO :waitasec:

I'm not sure LE is really actively seeking tips; it is almost as though they are humoring the public, yeah, call in, we'll check it out.

If they really wanted tips, why wouldn't they be putting out that sort of request for blanket information, at least, as to any neighbors acting strangely, any people who have left the area after June 4th, any people you saw around that time that you have not seen before or since, etc...

I think the only tips they really seem to want are from the people who were at that school that day. And oh yeah, if you happen to see Kyron, let us know. This is how it is coming off to me. And I agree with a poster on another thread that LE is starting to act a bit peeved toward anyone who dare ask a question; they seem to have cowed the media, and now want to make sure the public backs off as well.

I can't remember the last time LE actually found a missing child-it is amost always a member of the public.
