You guys know what? I kind of have a feeling that after today, JB will be really pushing casey to plea. Here's why, and it's JMO: the bottom line is, Baez is lazy. This case has run its course for him to benefit from it, and there's nothing left in it for him except hard, hard, unpaid work on a losing case. He's milked the media already, and now the case has started personally costing him financially as well as professionally (sanctions, deposition travel, etc). Until today, he was just coasting past deadlines and work, but now he's been taken to task and I'm guessing he'd rather have casey plea guilty than put in the work that's required of him now.

I went to law school with a couple people like Baez, and they really sucked. Had one guy on my moot court team that coasted and put everything off until the last minute, didn't carry his weight, but carried a monogramed briefcase and wore his law school sweater almost everywhere so people would know he was in law school, and when push came to shove, he relied on us, his teammates, to give him notes and basically do his work for him. People like that will do almost anything to avoid actually getting down to work. They try to slip under the radar constantly. He eventually flunked out. I'm seeing a lot of this in Baez, and I'm guessing that now, more than EVER, he's going to be pushing casey to consider pleading guilty.

JMO of course.

Wonder what JB's New Year's resolution was?

Did he refer to his Law School reports, i.e., Must try harder, Must try harder?

I agree. Both CM and JB just want the limelight and need to rely on 'others' to do the 'work'. Maybe ICA is working as a member of the Defense and writing the Motions?

A Leader wants to Lead but IMO s/he must do so by example ... being a Leader is hard work.

So how soon does the information that Baez has been sanctioned show up on the Bar website? Is he required to provide that factual tidbit on his website or to prospective clients? Does he have to wear a scarlet "S" to court from now on? Do other lawyers taunt sanctioned lawyers at cocktail parties?

And SOTS brings up a good point--where are the post-hearing pressers from the defense team? (ETA: thanks for the Boedeker link! The silence speaks volumes....)

Do I recall that Judge Perry complimented Ann Finnell for her "efforts"? Am I crazy??

I took it as more of a sympathy and commiserating thing. "I compliment you for having the tenacity and strength of character to not simply haul off and beat your co-council with the courtroom microphones"

Just wanted to thank everyone again! What a day! Time for me to go assume my domestic goddess disguise!

I don't think it will show up on the Bar site or records. he was not sanctioned by the Bar. he recieved specific sanctions from a court and judge. Unless someone submits a bar complaint I don't think it would have anything to do with the bar or his standing as a lawyer.

Now if he does not pay the court fines? That they may take an interest in.

Of course I can't find it now I want to quote it, but I have read online that Baez was placed 181 in a class of 183. Can't say I'm surprised. He's still at the bottom of the heap.

That's scary! I mean really, there are possibly 2 lawyers running around Florida that are worse than JB? /e shudder! :ohwow: :ohwow: :ohwow:

He uses his hearing loss quite selectively if you ask me.

He sure the heck does.

The man does not have a problem leaning over, and behind Casey to whisper and listen to Baez, with paper in front of their faces so he can't read lips in that manner.
Head down, cocked slightly down, and they whisper and appear to have no problems.

Second, for anyone that watches the hearing from today again, there are a couple of times that the state, directly behind him are talking, and he whips around so fast and replies that I'd be surprised if HE doesn't show up in a neck brace tomorrow.

The man can hear ~ and I'm tired of him using this ploy as one his tricks.

"Oh, I'm just an old man ~ I'm not up on all of this internet stuff, I can't hear, I wasn't here for that, I didn't know that".
BS.
All of it ~ BS ~ BS ~ BS.

And how they were so desperate to "win" something they settled to just sit at the little kid table so the "telephoto" lens couldn't watch Casey scribbling. You'd think there wasn't a death penalty looming. Never ceases to amaze me what the defense seems to think is important.

Well we may not get to see what she's scribbling, but I'll bet we'll probably be able to tell what color crayon she's using.

I'd bet on a Dora the Explorer coloring book....

Judge: Casey Anthony's Attorneys Violated Order

Casey Anthony was in court with her attorneys Monday and tried to convince a judge to toss out key pieces of evidence in her trial. (01/03/11)

What do sanctions mean, exactly? Any fines involved?
The smack down:

The court will order the following:

Expert witnesses shall provide written reports to the State of Florida within 7 days, that is the defenses experts, of the date of this order. The reports must contain the following:

1. A complete statement of all opinions the witness will express and the reasons for them.
2. Any data or other information considered by the witness informing the opinion or conclusions.
3. Opinions not expressed in the written reports provided to the State of Florida and/or at depositions taken during discovery in this case will not be allowed to be testified to at trial.

In short, if an opinion which is not expressed in the report or deposition, that opinion will be disallowed at trial.

As a sanction for the violation of the court's order, the court will assess the costs incurred by the State of Florida in bringing this motion, including the time brought, and reasonable attorney's fees by the State of Florida to be assessed against lead counsel, Mr Baez. The state shall fill out that affidavit of costs, submit it to the court with a copy to the defense. The defense will have five days to contest the amounts in that and then the court will enter a final order as to the costs to be paid.

So, the sanctions were assessed against Baez only. HHJP referred to him as the lead counsel. Why wasn't he up there arguing against the motion? Never mind, I already know the answer. He has five days after the State submits the costs (cha ching) to the court to contest it. Wonder how quick they will file this? LOL

okay i'm back....

I noticed Mason likes to throw out "we'll take it to a Federal law suit" he's threatened Judge Perry with it before and threatened it again in this hearing
If Mason is serious about fighting Florida's sunshine laws then he should just go ahead and do it...and stop using it as an idle threat....

  • #1,094
Thank you for the updates everyone. You sleuths certainly know how to 'paint the picture'! LOL!

HHJP: i modified the system so you could turn it off when you need to. it is up to you do do that. ha

Mason must have missed the "How To Turn Modified Mic ON and OFF" class Judge Perry had

I took it as more of a sympathy and commiserating thing. "I compliment you for having the tenacity and strength of character to not simply haul off and beat your co-council with the courtroom microphones"

:floorlaugh::floorlaugh::floorlaugh:

I would pay GOOD $$$$ to see the bolded line above.

  • #1,097
Baez is the designated person to control the mic mute button...that is all he is qualified for is what I bet the Judge would like to say.

bbm
Well there's the problem right there

Can't turn a mic on and off, can't file proper motions, can't file discovery on time as per court order, can't file discovery period as per court order..
But he CAN secretly obtain $275,000 in private funds, IMO have and did nothing to show for it and then ask the State of Florida to foot the bill for his clients defense.

  • #1,098
Well here is what I think about JB getting sanctions, as much as he has complained and whined about the State having unlimited funds and them not needing to worry about money, Well now that some of the funds will be coming out of his pocket and being given to the SA that should really chap his a**, and when JBP was talking about he would not mind trying this case twice and about the attorneys who are looking to sue trial lawyers to get back JAC and Florida taxpayers money, my guess is JP better be looking real close at how he has already spent the money he has been given because something tells me if there was an audit on this case they would already find misappropriation of funds.

  • #1,099
IF CHENEY MASON pulls his I didn't hear you one more time......I'm going to lose it!

Kronk is still on the bus route as it sounds.

Wonder if Kronk's lawyer was notified and if he's at the hearing?

  • #1,100
does anyone have any kind of an educated guess on how much money JB will be charged for the sanctions that the SA will be paid, I bet if they bought a pencil for todays hearing that he will be charged for that I really hope that JA and LDB will be able to get a high figure but I have no idea how much a hearing even cost's.
