2011.05.09 - Jury Selection Day One

SA needs some people who have young children.

IMO, people with young children who are willing to be away from them for 2 months+ are not going to be beneficial to the state.

It's been a while since I looked into jury selection around here (TX), but the last I knew, having a child under the age of 10 was good for an automatic dismissal.

I would like to may a little comment especially for those who post here and are local yokels......IF by chance you got by the financial burden, and IF you passed the questionaire, and questioning..Would any of you really want your history of postings aired on cross exam??..The reason I ask is after the Nancy Cooper trial, you have to know whatever you have posted in the past on Facebook or twitter, or Websleuth..or Insession or any blog for that matter will get exposed....Rather embarrassing to say the least in showing biases one way or the other....

I cant recall how many times Websleuth got a "Shout Out" in that trial :couch:nline::whistle::floorlaugh:

I agree! So far there's only the one lady who has a 5-year-old, and I'm pretty sure the DT will see to it that she's dismissed.

This jury needs people with children.

It is surprising - and very disturbing - that so few companies are willing to compensate employees while they serve on jury duty. So much for good corporate citizenship! They could at least make up the difference I'd hope.

I disagree. As a small business owner, I cannot even begin to imagine the expenses of paying an employee's salary PLUS their sub for 2 months. Payroll is our biggest expense by far, and that would be a huge burden.

For a big company it may not be a major issue, but for us it would be devastating. Not to mention the cost of training a new person who isn't even going to stay.

I would love to see that too. The Defense, not so much. In fact, they would be the Defense's worst nightmare, and would fight most vehemently against them being on the jury. JMO.

I don't find it surprising at all. In this economy, to ask a company to pay an employee's wages AND pay someone to do the job normally performed by the employee is tough. Yes, in the perfect world, it would be the norm, but unfortunately we live in a world where money makes the world go 'round, and right now especially money is at a premium. :cow:

I don't post on any of those sites other than WS where I am anonymous, other than my screen name.
I would not serve on this Jury. I believe she is guilty of Murder.

Im just putting this where ever it goes as this moves so quickly...I've been reading along, watching and listening when I can on the news (as The Soldier aka Hubby) will not get me awesomesauce cable with TruTv or other stuff where I could read and listen at the same time....bah!

I am have been so educated today in the process of the law with these jury selections.
This hasn't made me simpathetic to ICA at all...the crying, the nods and even when the one potential juror stated that he couldn't service cause he thought she was guilty and she had an "eyebrow raise"...no good points for you, my dear.
And I have to say...I have LOVED the single moms or moms who have young children who actually care about where their child will go if they aren't there with them and serving on this jury. The moms who care a bunch about their kiddo. Seems like an underground dig at ICA....maybe not. But I'm gonna treat it like so.
I don't post much, but I read all the time. So I'll be spending the next 6 to 8 weeks with you here, silent but here!!!

HHJP: you cannot serve eight weeks? it would make your life a wreck?
