KENOSHA (WLUK) -- A Kenosha man is facing child neglect charges in connection with a fire last Thanksgiving that left his three children dead.

Joshua Kannin, 39, was charged Tuesday with three counts of neglecting a child - consequence is death. A summons was issued and he is to appear in court May 14.

On the night of Nov. 27, 2025, firefighters were dispatched to the 5200 block of 43rd Avenue for a report of an apartment complex on fire. When crews arrived, the building was engulfed in flames. Officials said the fire was so intense, they could not get inside.

10-year-old Rylee and 9-year-old Connor were pronounced dead at the scene. 7-year-old Alena was airlifted to a Milwaukee hospital, but later died. Their father, Kannin, was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

"In the months following the incident, the Kenosha Police Department has worked in close coordination with fire investigators from the Kenosha Fire Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Through this collaborative investigation, authorities reviewed a substantial body of evidence, including surveillance footage, witness statements and detailed fire investigation reports," a news release from KPD states.

The brothers were pronounced dead, while Alena was hospitalized with burns covering 80% of her body – before she later died.

Kannin, who was hospitalized, admitted to having a cigarette before bed and was woken up during the night. But he wasn’t sure if it was because of his “cat making noise or due to the smoke.”

Fire officials searched his home and realized there were no smoke detectors.

Kannin said he had taken down one alarm because it “started to malfunction or make sounds.” He claimed the alarm would “randomly go off” and described the noise as an “annoyance.”

Kannin also said he kept boards on the windows "to prevent burglaries." During a follow-up interview, the complaint said Kannin told investigators that he typically smoked in the kitchen near the stove and a window and put the butts out in water.

The mother of the children described Kannin's apartment as "absolutely disgusting" and said, when the kids stayed with their father, it was "fend for yourself" in terms of food. She also said Kannin had recently taught the 10-year-old how to make ramen noodles.

Prosecutors said Kannin's lease agreement included a "no smoking clause"

So, his house was a pigsty, children were fending for themselves during visitations, he disabled smoke detectors because they were annoying and boarded up window to deter burglars, in his non smoking apartment where he was regularly smoking. Sounds like a real super parent.

My God how that little girl must have suffered. The boys too but their suffering was ended pretty quickly, their sister lay in hospital covered in third degree burns until her death the next day.
