In the wake of the U.S. presidential election, one cruise company is offering travelers a getaway for the length of one term in office.

Residential cruise operator Villa Vie Residences’Tour La Vie program allows travelers to join a trip around the world for between one and four years. The company’s Villa Vie Odyssey ship aims to circumnavigate the globe every three-and-a-half years, with stops in more than 400 destinations

I saw that yesterday and thought that I’d like to have the disposable income to be able to consider it- not that I’d do it- but I’d like the option :D

As fond as I am of cruising, I would never want to be "at sea" for such an extended period of time. Two weeks is my limit, and then I want to get off the floating sardine can and back on solid ground. Besides, the cost of the four-year cruise will buy a lot of popcorn for the soap/circus that is going to unfold. It's sure to be amusing, and, at times, frustrating, but it will definitely not be boring. Fasten your seatbelts...

Agreed that 4 years would be extreme for cruising- I just wanted the money for it to be a “consideration” for me- ;) it’s going to be a buckle up next 4 years- anything but ho hum and dull - moo

I’m sure that at some point in 4 yrs of the same passengers cruising around the world there could be some mystery novel worthy plot lines unfolding
Absolutely! Between this 4 year cruise and the escaped monkeys, the stories are getting a bit kooky around here lol.

Imagine the staff that will have to work on this ship? What would time off even look like

If it’s like other cruise lines staff cycle off for longer breaks every 5-9 months - that’s how it’s worked out with cruise staff I’ve talked with over the years- sometimes they work back to back contracts with out a break and then might have 2-3 months off -

We had conversations with quite a few staff members on our recent cruise, most were on a 9 month on, 3 month off schedule.

More information on the cruise. If I could take my dog along (and if I had an extra couple hundred thousand bucks) i would love to go.

Experience more than 400 destinations!

And while the company did not directly mention the U.S. presidential election in its press release announcing the “Tour La Vie” package, it’s clear from the cheeky marketing materials that they’re targeting U.S. residents eager to escape the country’s electoral realities.

Those interested can join a four-year “Skip Forward” package, a three-year “Everywhere but Home” package, a two-year “Mid-Term Selection” package and a one-year “Escape from Reality” package.

If I had the money, I would be on that ship right now. Ideal to spend four years just studying online, working on poems, meeting people from so many cultures (stops in 400 destinations, wow!) and all of it surrounded by sea. Sounds fabulous if the food on board is up to standard (some cruises have really bad food.)

I would too!

I was discussing this with several of my friends and one of them pointed out that the price wasn’t actually unreasonable, considering that you wouldn’t have to pay rent, utilities, internet, car insurance, cleaning lady, vehicle insurance and maintenance, purchase gas and groceries, etc.

He even said he would sell his vehicle and just buy a new one after he returned from the cruise in four years.

For a person who worked from home it would be a great opportunity.

I agree! here in the UK, the average monthly rent for an apartment has gone through the roof and heating bills even more so... four years not having to worry about any of that sounds like bliss. A stress-free life is priceless. I hope your friend gets to do this four year cruise, this would be a life-changing experience for him!

The average apartment rental in the area where I live is over $2,000 per month. I own my home but could rent it out for four years if I was going to go on the cruise. Like I said, if only I could take my dog with me :)

From the above linked article

Packages range from US$40,000, but it costs US$255,999 for one person to have their own room for four years and US$159,999 per person for a double occupancy room for four years.
