Good evening all.
I am new to this community, and need help! I am the next generation of my family carrying the torch and task of finding a missing loved one,or finding the information that will lead us to their remains.. In 1979/1980 in Espanola Ontario Canada, my grandfather's brother went missing (nearly 45 years our family has had no closure). The Espanola police service (now OPP) did very little to investigate the disappearance of my great Uncle, who until that day had never done anything out of the ordinary! To this day he has never been located, not has his remains and has yet to even be legally declared deceased.. There were rumors in our town that he had been murdered and buried behind an old laundromat adjacent to a grocery store, police never followed up on those leads, despite coming from credible sources.. Many of the people that has information are now deceased, but our family still greives, and mourns the person gone 45 years without answers as to what happened, 45 years our family has held this heartache of our loved one going unclaimed ..Is he buried where people have claimed? Was he hurt and left somewhere? Was his body found by a neighbouring town or city, and listed as John Doe,buried somewhere with no name, nobody to mourn his loss? Did he suffer amnesia from an injury and wander, end up in a hospital? These are questions we ask ourselves daily!
My grandfather has been gone nearly 30 years, and it tore him apart for those years he was alive, not knowing what happened to his big brother, I grew up hearing stories, seeing the anguish my family suffered, every now and then some investigator would come ask questions, update our family and then leave, and in the early 90's they just stopped coming!
I would like to have answers, I would like to try to bring my uncle home, lay him to rest with my grandfather and give him his name back! And if this was someone else's doing, then bring justice!
I have DOB,Name, police report numbers(which are now in archived files), and photos, any help would be greatly appreciated..

Idk how this all works! Do I publicly post all the information I have? Are there websites to upload images to be compared against coroner photos? I really need guidance or help from people that know how to use the internet to help locate missing persons, find the deceased, solve crimes?

@mscece , hello, and welcome to Websleuths. I am so sorry about your family member, but you have come to the right place. The people on this site are truly amazing and are helpful to a fault.
I am going to tag some members who might be more helpful than myself. @Trisha is showing as online at the moment. Also @MadMcGoo , @truthfinder2019 , can any of you help? Have you heard of the CharleyProject.org; the doe network; NAMUS? And as far as I know, yes please post as much information as possible. JMO MOO

You'll find some good people here with knowledge to help. The only thing I can answer right now is your question on the the ability to compare photos (I assume of the missing relative) to coroner photos.

Coroner and autopsy photos are generally considered public records, but the rules governing their access can vary significantly by jurisdiction. In some states, autopsy reports and associated photographs may be accessible to the public under open records laws, but there are often restrictions in place to protect privacy and sensitivity. Other states may restrict them completely from public access and viewing. Even outside of state restrictions in some cases, access may be limited to protect the privacy of the deceased, or their family (but that is usually if the death was recent).

Obviously, if the autopsy is part of an active criminal or federal investigation, access will be restricted until the investigation is complete, even if the state normally allows access to such things. Court orders, in some cases, may also be issued that restricts access to such photos by the public. If you know of the state in which a death might have occurred, you could consult local laws on this and the local medical examiners office could also probably provide the answer.

I'm sorry you have to go through this, but you'll find support here.

Welcome mscece. What an ordeal for your family. You are a gem to keep up the search and you’ve come to the right place.

Yes, you do post all the information you have. Websleuths generally requires either a missing person/police report or news report to start a thread. After 45 years is anything like this available that you can post here? If not, I’m sure the folks @bettyboop notified can help you. If you give us the name of your great uncle, we can search online. We like to help! :)

@mscece , I am really sorry for what your family has to endure since so much time. We’llhelp as we can, I also believe you have come to the right place, there are amazing people here with diverse skills.

but first please get verified as family member as this will allow you to post insider information on which then we can try to work on.

The information on the verification process for insiders can be found here: or contact @Tricia

Thank you @LadyL - my brain saw Ontario and immediately thought "California". In Canada the release of autopsy photos (which would include public viewing, or publically accessible databases) is generally restricted and not a public record. Access is typically limited to the decedent's nearest relative or legal representatives. More info on Canadas laws regarding access to coroner records here: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/b...ice_release_of_information_september_2017.pdf
