If he wasn't an experienced windsurfer, he may have spent days holding onto a broken windsurfer before being picked up by a large vessel traveling towards the US. That is the most plausible explanation I can think of.
It would be interesting to know if someone did find a board washed up around the time he was found. I doubt if anyone would have reported it tho.

Hopefully, if he is Steve and IF his memory does come back, he will be able to fill in the missing pieces of where he was and how he got to Richmond Hill, GA.

Hey everyone!! FANTASTIC find!! I was so excited tht you've found such a close match!

One thing I noticed... someone mentioned he was found on August 21, 2004, but according to this article: http://savannahnow.com/node/364434
he was actually found August 31, 2004. Only 10 days difference, but that's 10 days that it might have taken to make it from the Canary Islands to Georgia.

I'm SO excited! I won't sleep tonight either! :D

Thanks, AJ! I guess I got my dates messed up. So that would mean there were 28 days between the two events. Good catch!

Steve's site shows a picture of the board. My impression is it's never been found.

ETA: I meant of a board, as in that would be something to look for?

The Pro Center René Egli II
Pro Center II is 2 miles south of Pro Center René Egli I. It is ideally situated near the large sand dunes and is still within the Sotavento wind funnel.

The spot is equally suitable for beginners and advanced windsurfers. In the large, shallow lagoon beginners and experienced
surfers can improve in super-flat water conditions, while wave heads can jump and ride in the three to six foot breakers on the sand bars in front of the lagoon. The lagoon comes and goes with high and low tide every six hours.
The lagoon, of standing depth, is the perfect rookie domain. On the open seas the experts fend for themselves.

This is where he was windsurfing and supposedly last seen.

You know, there is a possibility we haven't looked at if this is Steve Dewey.

Maybe he didn't go missing from the Canary Islands as reported. Maybe he was tossed overboard from a boat not far off the coast near Georgia in an attempt to kill him and they never expected him to resurface.

There are also many reports of boats near where they say he was windsurfing which were filled with illegal African immigrants trying to find jobs in European countries. Fishermen trafficking in immigrants are widespread and suppose he was picked up by one of those boats. They would not have wanted to be associated with this missing man and could have tossed him over near the coast to let him try to swim ashore or something.

I've been looking for additional info on Steve Dewey ever since his picture was first posted & I think I may have come across a MySpace for his younger brother who lives in Idaho. I thought I saved the page so I'm looking for it as I type & will post the link when I find it. Just wanted to let you know that Idaho could be another state to add into the mix.

This is the best potential match so far and the who, what & how would be un-freakin' believable if it really is him. One thing that particularly stood out for me in addition to the pictures was the description of Steve Dewey's personality. Sounds a lot like BK from what his nurse has said & what I perceived from his interview.

I do want to caution people again about contacting anyone from Steve's family. It is great we are finding out as much information as possible about his family and posting the myspace is great...but we don't want anyone to say anything that would give them false hope or involve them as it is not for us to do. It is up to LE and the FBI to handle on that end.

However, to have as much information as possible for BK to go through here is a good idea! I am sure all of this will blow him away as soon as his nurse checks her pms and reads through this!

Good find, SS, about the boats carrying illegal immigrants. I had also been thinking along those lines; if he were picked up by a boat involved in illegal activities, they would not want to come forward and get involved, and would be likely to drop him somewhere anonymously.

I recall it being stated that when BK was found, he had been beaten. I wonder if he was actually beaten by someone, or if the appearance of being beaten was caused by being tossed around in the ocean?

Life on the ocean sure does seem like the untamed wild west. I have been trying to find out more about Steve's dissapearance. I haven't found anything, but I did come across several cases of Windsurfing rescues in open waters and the usually are found 20 or so miles from shore. Far enough out to get picked up by a ship. The misadventures usually happen because someone overestimates their skill level and the sail or board breaks. They are simply too far out to swim back in and get pulled out to sea.

Hey everyone...I had exchanged emails with the nurse last week, when she sent me those photos of Benjaman. I just noticed her email includes a home phone and a cell phone. I'm not a phone person...does someone want to call her tomorrow? I can pm the phone numbers to someone.

PM the info to a couple of us and we can figure out who's going to make the call in the morning? However I'm mountain time and I'm sure someone is further east than I am.
