The Powell genealogy was actually determined from the newer form of testing for Paternal DNA or Y dna testing. BK's MtDna and nuclear DNA has been in CODIS since 2007. :)

Thanks for saving me reading! Does your explanation mean that "Powell" is from the father's lineage? (I'm sorry, I totally suck at understanding this stuff-and more.)

  • #262
thank you for the correct spelling
I never could spell lol
bluestarzz

No worries- I forgot how to spell "in my old age" and now I have to google everything. Or use a dictionary (if I remember where to find it).

Yes Ma'am-paternal DNA is somewhat new to the scene, meaning Daddy DNA lol. The principle is that most families carry the name of the father throughout their lines, so there should be common DNA markers.

Where things get a little hairy is that the paternal DNA can spontaneously mutate about 1 in 500 people; on top of that if you have a situation where there is an adoption of someone else's child or a "milkman" situation, it can throw off the identification of the individual. Let's say for example that Mr.Kyle's actual last name was Smith-he could be ID'd as a Powell because at some point someone with Powell Y DNA actually sired him unbenownst to Mr. Smith who may have either adopted him or BELIEVED that he sired him.

Make sense??

believe09, thank you for an explanation I could understand. (I may have to refer back to the post, just to keep it clear.) O/T You made me laugh when you brought the milkman into the equation.

I followed up on the names posted, and my comments are in bold.
SNIP
Name Birthdate Deathdate Social Issued Death Place
Gary Hensel Aug 29, 40 March 1971 Indiana 305-44 None spec

*I found newspaper articles that show a Gary Hensel was in the hospital in Valparaiso, and he was dismissed from Porter Hospital on Feb 26, 1963. He was admitted again Mar 7, 1964 for surgery to Porter Hospital. I cannot find anything else out, nor an obit.

BOYD MCCLUNG Aug 29, 43 Oct 1973 Indiana 315-44 None spec
I cannot find anything out about Mr. McClung He is not listed as a Vietnam war vet.

George Lyon Aug 29, 44 June 1970 Indiana 315-44 None spec

There was a George Micheal Lyon on the Vietnam Memorial Wall, but his residence is listed as Jersey City, NJ I do not know if this is the same person, there is no birth or death info listed.

Stephan Spiller Aug 29, 51 Aug 1976 Illinois 355-44 None spec
SNIP
Cannot find anything out about him. Not listed on Vietnam war vet site.

I do have social security numbers for these guys, so if someone can do something with them, let me know and I will get them to you.

These ones typically are Vietnam casualties, but of course they are well worth checking out. I mean, it is hard for me to believe that every single person who served was fingerprinted and that the file is available, but what do I know?

I was looking at obits for just the first name of Benjaman, and found a Benjaman R Melvin with a birthdate of 28 Aug 1948 and a death date of 27 Dec 1999. (He was 51) His father was David G Melvin and his mother was Lottie Adams. It appears he was both born and died in Worthington, KY. This person has a living wife with the maiden name Brenda Barker. He is listed on the SSDI as Bennie R Melvin., but his social sec is nothing like what BK remembers. Probably nothing, but thought I would mention it.

I have not heard back from Pomona LE about Royal Miller, but I did find birth information, and he his birthdate on the missing persons sites is incorrect---he was born 22 June 1946, not 1944. He was born in Los Angeles. I do not show any records of him being in CO or IN, so I do not think he is BK, but I will wait to here from Pomona.

Thank you Jules-you can PM me the SSN's if you want!

The exciting/frustrating aspect of this case is that BK could have chosen his name because it meant a lot to him. The numbers from his SSN could have been his mothers, lol...

Part of one of the reasons I wanted to look at what comes up on the SSDI with SSN's that start with his numbers etc is to validate (loosely) some of his recollections. For example, the first three digits possibly validate his recollection of where he was born ie Indiana. Second, the next two numbers seem to validate when he was born...some time mid forties to early fifties. At least IMO, lol.

Given the fact that he may have Source Amnesia, well it might have caused him to come up with the first three digits to reflect Indiana if he had read it somewhere. It is much less likely I would think, however, that he could have come up with the next two as 44 unless it was very close to the truth given what we are finding when combing some of the databases.

Then again, I am not great with numbers to help me out if this is fatally flawed!!

  • #274
believe09, I think it's a good idea to check the SSN, I think Benjaman is at an age where the numbers could be a good indicator of his origins? If he were a bit younger, I'm not so sure they kept the numbers going as well as they did in the earlier years? (I'm not helpful with this, all I've heard about SSN's that people about 20 years older than Benjaman have numbers related to their employment with the railroad, the state they are from and other indicators?)

There is also a James Richard Powell from Greensburg, IN

For reference to Vietnam vets and POW/MIA:

BK, I am PMing you the socials right now.

I found a Benjamin Powell who is an economics professor. He looks to be about the age of BK's son if he had one. Perhaps the Benjamin is his son, not himself?

Interesting that the wall would show emails from family and it may be the same Ben Powell from Shenandoah H.S. ? But died in Viet Nam.

respectfully snipped. this is one interesting picture Jules... really interesting imo. Is it just me or does the above Benjamin Powell in the photo share the same shaped bridge of the nose area as BK? The bridge of the nose area/shape has always stood out to me because it remains narrow with the shape of the nose rather than 'flaring outwards' twards the bottom of the inner eyebrows. IMO, that is one of Mr. Kyles very distinctive features. Am I seeing that here or is it the angle of the photo?

Good find Jules!

Good point, Dots. My question would be how did he avoid being drafted back in that time period?

Btw~ There were many Burger Chefs in Oklahoma.

Perhaps when his number came up, he was injured and thus not able-bodied. He remembers an incident where he fell from a loading dock, and he thinks he was what about 20 at the time? He may have falled off of a loading dock at a military base or even in country, for all we know but he could be a Veteran. Or he could have fallen off Aunt Molly's porch while he was hauling in bags of groceries. In any event, at that time, men were called in by their birthdates. All the 18 year olds males born on August 29, 1948 would have been called in to show up on the same day to the draft board.

Didn't BK say that he was exactly 10 years older than Michael Jackson? If so, he would have shown up to the draft board within X number of days of his 18th birthday. I am sure there is a rule somewhere about the number of days. If the 18 year old men didn't show up, they were tracked down.

Don't you love the professional military of today? Where they sign up because it is what they want to do for a career? O/T. I digress.

There were also college deferrments so that the young men would not be called out of college to serve, thus interrupting their studies. This started because the son of a senator was called up while in some Ivy League school. So, the government made a new rule. Lots of guys got degrees and even master's degrees, hoping the war would end before they finished school. The guy's who didn't have tuition money, were shipped off. We didn't have a ton of loans available then, it was pay as you go.

So, BK would have had to register for the draft on his 18th birthday, 8/29/66.

Since he remembers Idiana at least into his early 20's, he would have registered there. Someone will know where the draft board was located in Indiana in 1966. Maybe through the FOIA, the names of registrants would be released? I don't know. All these draft records would be on paper. So somewhere there is a warehouse storing the boxes of paper.

I am only trying to think of another avenue to pursue to help identify BK.

I thought so too, Cubby!! He states under personal that he lived in CA for the past several yrs, but it sounds like he lived in Boston too, as he said he was happy to be back with his Boston area sports teams, but perhaps only because he attened U of Mass for undergrad. Here is another pic:
http://www.independent.org/aboutus/person_detail.asp?id=1023

I am guessing, however, that he is the son of this person, who also is involved in Economics:

Did anyone happen to see that Richmond Hill is near Ft. Stewart? Don't know whether that is neither here nor there, but found it interesting.

What about SSN 312 and being born in Vincennes, Indiana? Is this what BK remembers?

Have these guys ever been looked at?

http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/k/kiser_rodney.html

Eye color is off, but look at this guys birth date, plus I think he has similar nose:
http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/c/calhoun_darrell.html

Interestingly enough, there is a Darrell Calhoun who lived in Indianapolis in the mid 1990's AND a Darryl Calhoun who lived in Richmond Hill, GA as of 2002 (with a wife named Lydia). I do not know if they are all the same person.
