6th grade boy dies playing the choking game

This is how I remember it too. However, we did it to have "visions."....

You know, after I posted my original statement, I thought about it and decided this game was probably our pre-teen's version of using hallucinogenics. (One couldn't actually buy pot in elementary school in those days.) I don't remember what if anything was said about it and it wasn't something we spent a lot of time doing. Just a way to deal with occasional boredom, IIRC.

I'm sorry, nurse. Some of us have been discussing this rather clinically, trying to understand it. We meant no disrespect, I promise you, and our hearts go out to you and to Brandon's family.

I also played this game as a child. I was about 12 or 13 when one of my friends told me about it. They way we did it was similar to someone else who posted. We would kneel on the arm rest of a couch, take a few deep breaths and then someone would grab you around your chest and squeeze and when you passed out you would fall back onto the couch. Pretty scary. I only did it one time.

Yes, friends of mine played this as well about 15 years ago as well, when we were 10-12 or so. I never did because I simply couldn't figure out what was good about passing out. lol

The really dangerous part happens when kids try and do it on their own.

I must have lived in a cave, as I have never heard of this until reading these stories here and don't remember anything like it when I was a child.

I don't know if there is a way to make kids afraid of something until it hits close to home, unfortunately...and not always then.

I had never even heard of the choking game until I started reading about it here and on other message board sites.

While I don't understand why a child would want to do this my heart goes out to Brandon and his parents. The loss has to be tremendous for all of his family.

I mentioned this to my daughter out of concern for the grandkids.

She remembers kids playing the game when she was a pre-teen (about 30 years ago) and also when she was a teacher about 15 years ago.

Apparently it makes a comeback every few years.

I am 52 and we used to call it "hyperventilating." I did it once at around 14 and think I extricated myself before passing out, didn't like it and was scared. It has been around for a long time.

As a teacher I do hear about it, and I do speak about it with students fairly regularly.

I am 35 and I did this a few times when i was young.

We would take a a bunch of deep breaths and then have someone hit us in the chest or squeeze our chest. This would make us passout.

The last time i did it was in fifth grade. The teacher had me and another boy go out in the hall to work on a class project. I helped him do this game and he passed out with blood coming from his nose. I went and got help and the school called 911. They took him to the hospital and lucky he was fine.

i did this in 7th grade. the way when someone kinda hooks you from behind. i passed out, it was right about when class was starting. when the word got to the teachers and school they made it a big deal. i think all of us may have been suspended. this was catholic school btw not public

Nursebeeme: I can't get this story out of my head. How is your son holding up? How about your family and Brandon's? I can't even imagine what you are all going through, although as the mother of young boys, I guess I have to keep trying and to keep vigilant.

i honestly don't see how this is "fun" or can get kids "high" for them to even want to do such a thing. i grew up and was a teen in the 90s and no one i knew did this, we never even heard of such a game. it's a shame such young children are playing with their lives like this, it's certainly a different generation.
