8.0-magnitude earthquake in the Solomons sparks tsunami warning in South Pacific

I've not seen anyone post this link before:

http://ptwc.weather.gov/ptwc/?region=1&id=pacific.TSUPAC.2013.02.06.0347

That's the NOAA Pacific Tsunami Warning Center/site...and they're indicating that local warnings/watches have been cancelled. I suspect it's been cancelled because the tsunami has already come.

This is a great site to bookmark, though, in case you haven't already.

...........According to the PTWC, a tsunami of about a meter (3 feet) was measured in Lata wharf, in the Solomon Islands. The center said a 12-centimeter (4.8-inch) wave was observed in neighboring Vanuatu. No damage was immediately reported in either island nation.

The quake occurred near Lata in Temotu province, the easternmost province of the Solomons, about a 3-hour flight from the capital, Honiara. The region has a population of around 30,000 people.

"There was no immediate report of damages or any accidents," said George Herming, a spokesman for the prime minister. "We've been hoping that reports will come in from the responsible authorities ... very soon."

In Honiara, the warning prompted residents to flee for higher ground.

"People are still standing on the hills outside of Honiara just looking out over the water, trying to observe if there is a wave coming in," Herming said. So far, he had received no reports that a wave had been observed in Honiara.

Atenia Tahu, who works for the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp. in Honiara, said most people were remaining calm..........

Weather.com meteorologist Nick Wiltgen says that "this area has been very seismically active recently with nine quakes registering 6.0 or greater in the past 7 days alone, including the 8.0 and the 6.4 aftershock this evening (U.S. time).".............more at link.....

Tsunami Destroys Villages in Solomons

Official accounts of the extent of the damage in the Solomons remained vague hours after the fact, and a government official said communication with the worst-hit areas remained difficult.

Among the affected areas has been the provincial capital of Lata, a city of about 2,300 in Temotu Province where hospital patients were evacuated to higher ground.

Chris Roger, a registered nurse at Lata Hospital said by telephone that five deaths had been confirmed; one child, an elderly male and three elderly females.

"Houses have been washed down, and the airport has been filled with seawater," said Charles Elliott Fox-Ngali, also a registered nurse at Lata Hospital who was reached by telephone.

Loti Yates, director of the national disaster management office, confirmed that the airport in Lata had been damaged by the tsunami and that logs and debris that had washed into the area by the wave were blocking the runway. Mr. Yates said four villages had been destroyed, but he could not confirm any fatalities. Mr. Yates said a team of officials will be sent to the region early Thursday.

Huh. An earthquake alarm/early warning item.

What do you all think?

Amazon.com: Earthquake Alarm: Home Improvement

Only 1 negative review...

I'm wondering if it would be a good item to have in the house, just "in case". Thoughts?

Earthquake warning system: reads s waves, sounds alarm so you can take cover before p waves hit.

Here's the problem. Where you live (I am going to say Burbank area because I don't know for sure) is about 40 ish miles to the San Andreas fault. At a distance of 500 miles you would get a 2 sec gap between the s and p wave.
Of course, and earthquake could happen anywhere up and down that faultline, or the hundred other nearby fault lines- but usually the only ones we are REALLY scared about are the ones (IMO) less than 500 miles away from us. I could be wrong on this one, but the last big San Jose quake and the Northridge quake epicenters were both within 100 miles IIRC.
Anyways, if you want a 2 sec gap warning or if you are just curious about it- go for it! I think it would be interesting to have around but I don't think it would protect you necessarily.

If you don't have one already, I would get one of those earthquake water barrels. You fill it up once a year or so and seal it up in your yard for emergency water. It took a few days before the Army came to bring us water in the Northridge quake and there was about an hour line.

Knowing our luck this will be the one time this jerk gets it right.

“There’s going to be many, many disasters, desert disasters, sometimes God speaks in alliterations to me,” Bakker said. “In California confusion is going to happen and it’s going to be awful, the earthquakes are shaking, the ring of fire is shaking, there are going to be earthquakes like we’ve never seen before, there’s going to be storms like we’ve never seen before.”

Isn't that the same Jim Bakker who used to be married to Tammy Faye? Of course, the biggest idiot can be accidentally right now and again, but Bakker is not what I'd call a credible source.

Northridge is within 100 miles of LA and San Jose is within 100 miles of San Francisco; perhaps that's what you meant because they are not with 100 miles of each other. (They are 326 miles apart.)

Thank you for the earthquake preparedness advice!
