A great white shark that weighs over 2,000 pounds and measures 15 feet, 5 inches long has been swimming along the US East Coast.

The female shark has been tagged with a tracker, which registered her being off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on October 12.
Since then, the shark has moved further south to the Florida Keys, where she showed up on Saturday.”

“She was tagged off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in August, 2013. Since then, the 2,300-pound shark has been making frequent excursions to Florida.”

I got stung by a giant jellyfish while diving in the Florida Keys but a meeting with Katharine would have made me lose my mind. She is very beautiful though and I’m so happy her story is being profiled.

I dont think I could bring myself to swim in the water.

Although I find this awesome, I also find it totally terrifying!! I love how they are able to monitor her movements and habits, though.

It IS absolutely terrifying! They are magnificent, spectacular creatures but as the poster above said, no way I’d want to swim near one!

Truly amazing to see the immense area of their range ! Believe I would have to skip the dip too. Definitely a pool swimmer

“OCEARCH stated on its website that it hopes Unama'ki will lead them to the site where she gives birth, exposing a new white shark nursery.”

Meet the 2,000-Pound Great White Shark That Reached the Keys

What I find especially interesting about all this is how previously it was thought that Great Whites preferred colder waters. It’s really only been coming out lately imo that they also swim in warmer waters.

For example:

“Great white sharks seem to love warmer ocean waters, not cold, surprising scientists. Great white sharks prefer warm water ocean eddies and tend to spend more time inside them then previously thought, according to a new study that analyzed the tracking data from two tagged sharks.”

Here I thought I’d have no chance of running into a Great White in the Florida Keys, and that is simply not true.
