A&M alumna says tuition break for illegal immigrants paved way for her success....

I keep getting knocked off WS today. Must be my server. Grr.

Cool Kimberly :)

Okay I looked at this and if I'm reading this right it wasn't a law passed to specifically give illegals free college. But after reading the article in post #1 (thanks tk71texas!) it looks to be a loophole in the legislation that was passed.

I'm confused?

(from link tk71texas gave us: http://www.khou.com/news/AM-Alumna-...mmigrants-paved-way-for-success-92928674.html )

Snipped from various parts of the article: The part I bolded in red has another link speaking about it.

From SouthCityMom (thanks SCM!) we have this link: http://www.theeagle.com/am/Students-debate-in-state-tuition

snipped and bolded in red to address the reporters choice of words in the first article:

(Question: how many of those that are included within that 1 percent are illegal aliens? The answer would give us much more insight to how widespread this problem is)

Much different from the wording in the first article.

and:

It is under those two pieces of legislation that my oldest son was eligible to attend a TX college as a military child and only pay instate tuition. He also was extended the other benefits within those bills because he graduated from a TX High School. This legislation was not passed to benefit undocumented citizens. IMHO. (as an aside he opted to serve instead).

I read both of those articles and IMHO if it really presents a problem then by all means the citizens of TX have the right to either change the bills to their liking or to get rid of them.

My personal opinion is that this young lady has every right to be proud of where she is and how far she has come and I see that she will be a contributing citizen of the USA once she is given the honor to apply and become one. The immigration situation in this Country right now is far too complex for me to even begin to contemplate. honestly.

Outstanding post, Kat - and I am right there with you!

Well, with all the illegal immigrant business going on in the country, what are your thoughts on this. As a parent of a senior in just a few weeks, some things are better left unsaid. :furious:

I will never understand rewarding someone for breaking the law. While my son who is a law abiding person has to work two jobs to pay for college. I have no problem with immigrants coming to this Country. I just want them to do it legally.

AND may I add(slightly o/t) apparently not all immigrants are equal........My husband is an immigrant from Great Britain & so many of the immigrant aid groups & programs(to help navigate the legal paperwork etc)are for hispanic immigrants only! There are Church groups who subsidize legal fees or provide free lawyers but only if you are hispanic.Because my husband is a white immigrant we didn't qualify..........

Do you know how many American kids don’t get to go to college because their hard working American families can’t afford it? Just to see stories like this where government is letting immigrants go at a reduced rate. IMO this is discrimination.

Or how about when immigrants arrive here and they are given business grants to start a business. So they can live the “American Dream”. Do you know how many hard working Americans have had the dream to own their own businesses all their lives, but can’t because they don’t have the finances to do it? IMO this is discrimination.

Or, when I’m pondering over all my medical bills and trying to decide how I will manage to pay all the deductibles and co-pays when my husband works very hard to pay for the insurance in the first place, but immigrants get here and get free medical care. They don’t have to worry about medical bills. We pick up that tab for them. IMO this is discrimination.

If an American kid's parents can't afford to send him, there is absolutely NOTHING stopping the little darling from getting a job and taking classes. There is NO REASON in the world for an American child not to go to college.

Most immigrants I know make good use of their business grants from the government. Sure many Americans dream of owning their own businesses and don't because they are unwilling to live without two new cars, or make any of the other necessary sacrifices to do so.

Trust me, I highly doubt you would want the medical care most of them are receiving. Insurance & pharmaceutical companies are the reason health care is so expensive, it has zero to do with illegal aliens. imo

How about a tuition break for the decendants of soilders that have kept this country free so that we can have colleges???? Yeah right! That would NEVER happen.
Somebody's toes might be stepped on.

This country has gone mad!

Actually - there is some kind of program, or there was? I have a friend that is a Vet and his daughter is going to college on the government as one of his benefits. I'm not sure what the program is or if it is still being offered. He was in the service a very long time ago. I just know his daughter, who is a smart and loving young woman, is going to be able to go to college! She deserves it!

I'm trying to think of a good way to get my points across without sounding like a bitty...sounds like you think American's are spoiled and lazy. As a hard working, tax paying American, that offends me. Most of my tax money goes to people such as those we are speaking of that get everything handed to them because they are "not from here" or are to lazy to work.

As far as the "darling" American getting a job, well they could get a starting job making next to nothing (if they are lucky to even find that in this economy) and work their arses off working and studying. A lot of kids do that. But why should immigrants get to go at a cheaper rate IN OUR COUNTRY??????? Why couldn't this girl get a job??? Oh yeah, she didn't even have a social security number. :waitasec:

You say most immigrants make good use of their grants. Well, I can tell you, they should. It's free money to them. Just because they not "from here". Makes me sick. Really it does. More of my tax money going to people who have done nothing to deserve it. What sacrifices have they made besides hopping on a plane or a boat or walking across our borders. I mean, really, what have they done?

And, IMO they get just as good of health care that I do. And I pay dearly for my insurance and still have to come up with a huge amount of money everytime I have to go to the hospital or have any tests ran. I'll have to try to pull some figures, but illegal aliens are a big reason our health care is so expensive. Somebody has to pay their bills. It dang sure isn't them.

So, I guess you think all someone has to do to get a college education, a business grant, and free medical care is hop a border? Wow, I bet our forefathers and military are proud of all their accomplishments and sacrifices they made. So immigrants can have a better life.
I really doubt that's what they were thinking when they fought to their death so you and I can have the freedoms to sit here and discuss how spoiled and undeserving Americans are.

Hey Salem: Someone else had asked me about that earlier and this was my response. When I made the original quote, I meant something more along these lines....

I understand that. I was kinda talking about decendants as in most Americans are decendants of American Soldiers who fought for our freedom at one point or another since the colonies were settled.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, IMO Americans should always have cheaper tuition because it was our forefathers who made America free to have colleges in the first place.

It's almost like we are punished for being Americans in our own country.

My understanding is that humans and Neanderthals mixed. What's next? Maybe some students could get a genetics test and prove they were part Neaderthal (minority) to get a scholarship or reduced tuition?
