A New Approach to Moderation at Websleuths

  • #101
This new moderation approach is just not working as intended IMO, it may work well on older threads etc but not new big threads . The Tepe thread was an utter mess, the Guthrie threads been an absolute riot.

Non post hoc ergo propter hoc. Your experience with the Guthrie and Tepe threads are not because of flagging vs deleting. It's because we have so many new users on an insanely busy thread.

I totally understand that, it’s insane there! I have noticed that some posts are getting deleted as off-topic, but the post they were replying to, which was off-topic to begin with, stays up. I do know some of the “original” posts that are off-topic (at least in my mind) have been reported and probably were before the deleted post was reported because it came so long after. Anyways, I can’t imagine how much work you guys are having to do and I really, really appreciate how hard you guys are working to keep the thread open for us to discuss. Hopefully this doesn’t get me a time out, but IMO, it kind of feels like some posters are getting their posts singled out as off-topic. Maybe I’m just overly sensitive, and that is a high possibility. Ok, now I’m going to go take a Xanax to bring my heart rate down.

When things fly by as quickly as that thread, we can't catch everything. If you ever see something stay up that shouldn't, especially when other more-benign posts get moderated, it's probably because we haven't caught the other one yet. Please use the Report link when you see something! We may not catch everything – we're human – but we're trying.

But I promise you it's no conspiracy to play favorites, support politics, or otherwise be jerks. The stress we are under to keep this ship upright would turn your hair white.

Thank you so much for the kind reply! And I bet, you couldn’t pay me enough to be a mod! I would do it for a meet and greet with Taylor Swift though.

Thanks again :)

Now there's a way to get more people to attend our monthly Zoom meetings... Have Taylor Swift on as a guest! :D

Speaking of which (the Zoom, not TS)... do we have a date yet? I tentatively put 2/20 on my calendar thinking that'll likely be the date picked.

I am very confused about how to handle the Lemon thread, too.

What is the correct action to take when someone constantly buries the same opinion again and again. The poster is of the opinion that the person charged is guilty. This is not an invalid opinion; they are charged after all.

But instead of posting new reasons that they think the person charged is guilty, they just sneak that assumption into another sentence, and distract by using neutral words like "action" in quotes to give it a criminal vibe, or they post about irrelevant court cases and act like they are related to the thread and support their opinion. But, when asked, they won't explain the reasoning, they just change their vocabulary and use a new word in quotes.

So, responding seems repetitive, because it's the same thing over and over: "that's not relevant," and "your buried opinion is not any more supported with that irrelevant link."

And reporting? Well, we are being told to not abuse reporting and it is not clear what exactly is abusive.

So, I guess my question is, when someone is doing no more than repeating their opinion and not adding a new basis for it, what is the proper thing to do? Continue to respond, which is likewise repetitive, or report?
